A few years ago, after his flight to White Plains was diverted to Albany by weather, Seth Godin used his cell phone to quickly arrange a rental car to take him back home. He announced to his fellow passengers that he would take anyone else who wanted to go, but he didn’t get any takers.
Sitting on the airplane was easy, there was little risk involved. Getting off that plane, sharing a ride with a stranger (even a well dress business man) involves thinking about things differently.

Encourage the entire room to stand up
Remain standing if you have the following…
An up to date and well rounded LinkedIn profile. (3 points)
A Facebook account that is open to the public and you’re proud of the photos you post and the conversations you have and hope employers find it (2 points)
A Twitter account that is also open and public where you carry on conversations where you seem interesting and intelligent (1 point)
Writing online is a way to absolutely stand out among your peers. It’s the extra effort most employers are looking for. Remain standing if you write at least once a month somewhere. Did you know you can write on LinkedIn?
Become a member of your local professional group, like the Triangle AMA or PRSA.
70% of jobs are filled by people who somehow short-circuited the hiring system. Friend of a friend introduces you or your old co-worker works there now. Look at the people next to you – say hello.

Every single employer will look at your LinkedIn page for a more complete view of you. Make your page better than everyone else.
Karl Sakas gets it. Go to his page and make your better than his.
You are in control of these! Talk to people and tell them what you want. Ask for specifically what you want.
Give and you shall receive. Try to recommend someone once a month with no expectation of a return recommendation.
Stop waiting to be picked. Pick yourself. Your comfort zone is no longer where you get to stay.
Rather than “following” a company, start interacting with them. Join some groups on LinkedIn. Read and comment on the stuff the share on LinkedIn or on their blog.
Join a Meetup, or better yet, create an awesome new one.
There is nothing more powerful than asking someone else for help.
We all hate to ask for help, but generally feel pretty special when someone asks us to help them. Use that to your advantage.
You have skills and experiences that are valuable to others – offer them freely.
