LIFEJACKETS
Lifejackets or life vests are mandatory on airplanes travelling over water
(in which case they consist of a pair of air cells (bladders) that can be
inflated by triggering the release of carbon dioxide gas from a canister -
one canister for each separate cell.
Or the cells can be inflated "orally" that is by blowing into a flexible tube
with a one-way valve to seal the air in the cell

Some of the inflatable life jackets also react with the salt/fresh
water, inflating them.
The latest generation of self triggering inflation devices,
however, respond to water pressure when submerged and
incorporate an actuator known as a "hydrostatic release".
Regardless of whether manually (pull cord) or automatically
triggered, a pin punctures the cartridge/canister and the CO2
gas escapes into the sealed air chamber.
The air chambers are always located over the breast, across the
shoulders and encircling the back of the head. They may be
inflated by either self-contained carbon dioxide cartridges
activated by the pulling of a cord, or blow tubes with a one-
way valve for inflation by exhalation.

EXAMPLE OF CREW LIFEJACKET
Designed specifically for pilots and
aircrew to be worn over flight suits,
the MSV971 is an inflatable flotation
cell integrated into a survival vest.
Providing a full 37 lbs of buoyancy,
the inflatable cell - available in
manual inflation - is comprised of two
independent chambers, separated by a
fully integrated floating baffle system.
This provides for an orally inflated
reserve chamber in the event that the
primary chamber becomes damaged..

Each vest is lightweight - approximately 3 lbs unloaded - and contains
specific pocket requirements for stowage of survival items such as rations
or lights. It is made with a Nomex fire resistant cover and mesh for high
durability. As well, each vest is integrated with a lifting harness for over-
water rescue by helicopter, and contains a buddy line and SOLAS
emergency whistle
Key Features:
1. Manual inflatable flotation cell
2. Survival vest contains specific pockets for stowage of survival gear
3. Made with Nomex fire resistant fabric and mesh
4. Dual chamber system for emergency oral inflation in the event of damage
to one chamber
5. Integrated lifting harness
6. Waist and chest adjustment straps
7. Buddy-line and SOLAS whistle

MAINTENANCE OF
LIFEJACKETS
LIFE JACKETS WHICH HAVE
BEEN USED FOR
DEMONSTRATION SHOULD
BE RETURNED AS IF THEY
WERE TIME EXPIRED.
CLEANING IS CARRIED OUT
USING WARM WATER AND
RECOMMENDED SOLVENT.
LEAKS MAY BE DETECTED
BY IMMERSION IN WATER
PRESSURE TESTING IS
CARRIED OUT IAW
MANUFACTURER'S
INSTRUCTIONS WHICH
TYPICALLY WOULD
REQUIRE INFLATION TO A
GIVEN PRESSURE THEN,
AFTER SPECIFIED TIME,
CHECKING THE PRESSURE
HAS NOT FALLEN BEYOND
LIMITS.
THIS IS FOLLOWED BY
SIMILAR TEST INVOLVING A
LONGER INFLATION PERIOD
BEFORE CHECKING ANY
PRESSURE DROP.

Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology
INSPECTION FOR CONDITION
WHILST INFLATED THE JACKET IS INSPECTED FOR
DISTORTION AND DAMAGE AND ANY MARKING
NECESSARY TO INDICATE DEFECTS MUST BE MADE
USING WHITE CHALK ONLY.
IF THE LIGHT IS OPERATED BY A DRY CELL, THE
BATTERY MUST BE REPLACED EVERY 6 MONTHS.
MANY ARE POWERED BY A WATER ACTIVATED
CELL & HAVE AN INDEFINITE LIFE PROVIDED NO
ACTIVATION HAS TAKEN PLACE DUE TO INGRESS OF
WATER.

Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology
A VISUAL MEANS OF CHECKING THIS IS OFTEN
PROVIDED.
THIS TYPE OF CELL IS ELECTRICALLY TESTED BY
CONNECTING A RESISTANCE TESTER ACROSS THE
CELL TERMINALS & OBTAINING A SPECIFIED
READING, E.G 5 MEGAOHMS MIN.
ALL TYPES OF LIGHTS TOGETHER WITH THEIR
CIRCUITS ARE CHECKED FOR CONTINUITY USING A
SLAVE 1 ½ VOLT BATTERY.
CO2 CYLINDERS ARE CHECKED FOR CORRECT
CONTENTS BY WEIGHING AND ARE “LIFED”
USUALLY 10 YEARS

FUNCTIONAL CHECK
AFTER THE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN COMPLETED THE
JACKET SHOULD BE INSPECTED TO SEE THAT ALL
EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN PROPERLY FITTED & THAT ALL AIR
HAS BEEN EXPELLED.
ON SOME TYPES THIS IS CARRIED OUT BT FITTING A
DEFLATION KEY TO THE MOUTH VALVE; AFTER DEFLATION
THE KEY MUST BE REMOVED.
THE JACKET IS THEN FOLDED IAW MANUFACTURER'S
MANUAL BEFORE PUTTING IT BACK INTO VALISE &
SECURING THE FLAP.
NEXT DUE INSPECTION MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE LIFE
JACKET.

FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology LESSON OBJECTIVE AND OUTCOME OBJECTIVE: – GAIN KNOWLEDGE ON THE PURPOSE OF EMERGENCY AND ROLE EQUIPMENT FITTED TO HELICOPTER OUTCOME: – DESCRIBE THE PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF EMERGENCY AND ROLE EQUIPMENT FITTED TO HELICOPTER © Allen Peter Diman 2
  • 3. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology INTRODUCTION • IN THIS LESSON, WE WILL TOUCH ON THE TOPIC OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT FIITED TO AIRCRAFT & HELICOPTER IN PARTICULAR. AMONG THEM ARE; 1. LIFE JACKETS 2. LIFE RAFTS 3. FIRST AID KIT & EMERGENCY AXE 4. EMERGENCY FLOATATION EQUIPMENT. 5. PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER 6. FIRE AND SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM © Allen Peter Diman 3
  • 4. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology INTRODUCTION (CONT) WE WILL DISCUSS EACH OF THE ITEM IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS; PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION COMPONENTS APPLICABLE MAINTENANCE ACTIONS FOR ITEMS THAT YOU’VE COVERED IN OTHER SUBJECT SUCH AS A/C CABIN – THEY WILL BE PRESENTED FROM A HELICOPTER POINT OF VIEW. © Allen Peter Diman 4
  • 5. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology LIFEJACKETS Lifejackets or life vests are mandatory on airplanes travelling over water (in which case they consist of a pair of air cells (bladders) that can be inflated by triggering the release of carbon dioxide gas from a canister - one canister for each separate cell. Or the cells can be inflated "orally" that is by blowing into a flexible tube with a one-way valve to seal the air in the cell © Allen Peter Diman 5
  • 6. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology Some of the inflatable life jackets also react with the salt/fresh water, inflating them. The latest generation of self triggering inflation devices, however, respond to water pressure when submerged and incorporate an actuator known as a "hydrostatic release". Regardless of whether manually (pull cord) or automatically triggered, a pin punctures the cartridge/canister and the CO2 gas escapes into the sealed air chamber. The air chambers are always located over the breast, across the shoulders and encircling the back of the head. They may be inflated by either self-contained carbon dioxide cartridges activated by the pulling of a cord, or blow tubes with a one- way valve for inflation by exhalation. © Allen Peter Diman 6
  • 7. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology EXAMPLE OF CREW LIFEJACKET Designed specifically for pilots and aircrew to be worn over flight suits, the MSV971 is an inflatable flotation cell integrated into a survival vest. Providing a full 37 lbs of buoyancy, the inflatable cell - available in manual inflation - is comprised of two independent chambers, separated by a fully integrated floating baffle system. This provides for an orally inflated reserve chamber in the event that the primary chamber becomes damaged.. © Allen Peter Diman 7
  • 8. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology Each vest is lightweight - approximately 3 lbs unloaded - and contains specific pocket requirements for stowage of survival items such as rations or lights. It is made with a Nomex fire resistant cover and mesh for high durability. As well, each vest is integrated with a lifting harness for over- water rescue by helicopter, and contains a buddy line and SOLAS emergency whistle Key Features: 1. Manual inflatable flotation cell 2. Survival vest contains specific pockets for stowage of survival gear 3. Made with Nomex fire resistant fabric and mesh 4. Dual chamber system for emergency oral inflation in the event of damage to one chamber 5. Integrated lifting harness 6. Waist and chest adjustment straps 7. Buddy-line and SOLAS whistle © Allen Peter Diman 8
  • 9. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology MAINTENANCE OF LIFEJACKETS LIFE JACKETS WHICH HAVE BEEN USED FOR DEMONSTRATION SHOULD BE RETURNED AS IF THEY WERE TIME EXPIRED. CLEANING IS CARRIED OUT USING WARM WATER AND RECOMMENDED SOLVENT. LEAKS MAY BE DETECTED BY IMMERSION IN WATER PRESSURE TESTING IS CARRIED OUT IAW MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS WHICH TYPICALLY WOULD REQUIRE INFLATION TO A GIVEN PRESSURE THEN, AFTER SPECIFIED TIME, CHECKING THE PRESSURE HAS NOT FALLEN BEYOND LIMITS. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY SIMILAR TEST INVOLVING A LONGER INFLATION PERIOD BEFORE CHECKING ANY PRESSURE DROP. © Allen Peter Diman 9
  • 10. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology INSPECTION FOR CONDITION WHILST INFLATED THE JACKET IS INSPECTED FOR DISTORTION AND DAMAGE AND ANY MARKING NECESSARY TO INDICATE DEFECTS MUST BE MADE USING WHITE CHALK ONLY. IF THE LIGHT IS OPERATED BY A DRY CELL, THE BATTERY MUST BE REPLACED EVERY 6 MONTHS. MANY ARE POWERED BY A WATER ACTIVATED CELL & HAVE AN INDEFINITE LIFE PROVIDED NO ACTIVATION HAS TAKEN PLACE DUE TO INGRESS OF WATER. © Allen Peter Diman 10
  • 11. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology A VISUAL MEANS OF CHECKING THIS IS OFTEN PROVIDED. THIS TYPE OF CELL IS ELECTRICALLY TESTED BY CONNECTING A RESISTANCE TESTER ACROSS THE CELL TERMINALS & OBTAINING A SPECIFIED READING, E.G 5 MEGAOHMS MIN. ALL TYPES OF LIGHTS TOGETHER WITH THEIR CIRCUITS ARE CHECKED FOR CONTINUITY USING A SLAVE 1 ½ VOLT BATTERY. CO2 CYLINDERS ARE CHECKED FOR CORRECT CONTENTS BY WEIGHING AND ARE “LIFED” USUALLY 10 YEARS © Allen Peter Diman 11
  • 12. FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology FUNCTIONAL CHECK AFTER THE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN COMPLETED THE JACKET SHOULD BE INSPECTED TO SEE THAT ALL EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN PROPERLY FITTED & THAT ALL AIR HAS BEEN EXPELLED. ON SOME TYPES THIS IS CARRIED OUT BT FITTING A DEFLATION KEY TO THE MOUTH VALVE; AFTER DEFLATION THE KEY MUST BE REMOVED. THE JACKET IS THEN FOLDED IAW MANUFACTURER'S MANUAL BEFORE PUTTING IT BACK INTO VALISE & SECURING THE FLAP. NEXT DUE INSPECTION MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE LIFE JACKET. ALLEN PETER DIMAN 12
