3. Aalto University Campus Vision 2011
Our Students: creating a world-class
student learning experience that
engages and offers freedom of choice
requires that we bring undergraduates
together on a single site.
Our People: co-location enables
connections between researchers that
stimulate the production and sharing of
new knowledge.
Sustainable
unified campus
Our Economy: Aalto’s investment priority
will always be our people not walls.
Therefore, even as we develop,
expenditure on campus facilities should
stay around the same level as today.
This requires that we focus resources
and share facilities.
Our Community: interactions with society
are supported through an open and vibrant
centralized campus that provides
opportunities for people with different
backgrounds and interests to meet.
4. Due to many modernisation projects and new construction,
Aalto University´s Otaniemi campus is facing a great
transformation upcoming years.
ARTS new building complex will include metro station and
shopping mall with new services. The bachelor studies will
be concentrated under one roof and campus library is to be
modernised. Dipoli will become the new university main
building.
Aalto University has a bold campus vision that aims at world
class student experience, multidisciplinary co-operation and
intelligent use of shared resources. In order to implement
this vision we need to involve end users in design projects.
One example of that is the library project that started 2013.
This masterpiece of Alvar Aalto is soon to be modernised.

12. Library´s vision is to transform itself into an inviting Learning
center. Meanwhile the digitalisation is changing the
customer behaviour. What would be an applicable service
concept for the future Learning center? And how can we
create a buzzing meeting place in historical building?
Planning was started with service design project. 3 design
teams were established to interview Aalto staff and students
across campuses. In those interviews the daily life and
activities and working and learning patterns of users were
mapped. Based on that data 6 user profiles and related
customer journeys were defined.
The new service concept, result of many workshops and
prototyping with end users, includes 4 focus areas and a
bold service promise for the new Learning center.

17. The architects and interior designers that were recruited to
project too, used the new service concept as basis for
spatial design. The services were grouped and located in
the building to create different theme floors.
The basic architectural idea is to take one low basement
floor down and concentrate technical systems, to create a
multilayered public space and preserve the historical interior.
The interior design, for its part, celebrates Alvar Aalto but
adds new elements that express new Aalto University story.
In this project the traditional design methods were replaced
by concept design with 3 consultancies. The challenge for
project manager is then to match suitable competencies
and manage the network of designers. However, this model
may result in a rich concept and added value for the client.

27. According to studies university facilities are underutilised.
Along with the space efficiency the usability needs to be
improved too, as many environments no longer support
new ways of working and learning.
2013 many pilot projects were initiated to test new ways of
working, create novel space concepts and involve end
users with variety of co-design methods.
Campus and Facility Services was the first one to move
from traditional cell office to “activity based office” that offers
mix of spaces and mainly shared desks for staff. The POE
results show the improved space efficiency, increased
interaction and staff productivity. The space occupancy,
however, still remains low and could be developed further.

30. Placemaking
“In a future where people do not HAVE to be in any particular place, they will go
where they WANT to be. In a future where employees do not HAVE to be in their
company’s offices, the Placemaker’s role will be to attract them to WANT to be
there. Placemakers will be vital to the future of cities.”
Placemaker Research Programme
31. Our next big challenge is to implement new ways of working
in new ARTS building. The future office concept there is
based on 3 profiles, desk sharing, work cafes and team
offices. The concept will first be tested in Dean´s Office.
New ways of working is about major cultural change, as the
current university space provision is hierarchical and offices
support solo work mainly. But in order to survive the financial
crisis, sustainability issues and global competition we need
to rethink the way we work and use the space.
We designers are placemakers. Our challenge is to create
inviting places where people want to come. And there the
co-design is a powerful tool.
