Landscape
‘The lawn is tilted from one side,
lifting the landscape as if lifting a
piece of paper. The main hall, study
spaces, depots and offices seem to
slide underneath.’
10. 10
The cone
‘As a symbol of technical
engineering, the cone pins the
grass roof and the library together
like a giant skewer.’
11. 11
Climate control
• cold and heat are stored in
groundwater at 45 to 70 meters
• columns provide heating and
ventilation
• indoor air is led through an air
cavity between the inner and
outer glass sheets and then
discharged
• the grass roof is a great insulator
and holds rain water for slow
evaporation
12. 12
Book wall
• hanging from the ceiling
• slender tie rods share the weight
with floor beams inserted in the
wall
• ‘Houben blue’ is the signature
colour on the wall, named after
the Library’s architect
• depots for books, journals and
historical and TU Delft-related
objects are in the basement
• total book shelves: 45 km
13. 13
Transformation needed
(2007-2010)
• the Library space was not
optimally used
• decrease in the use of traditional
Library products and services
• connection with learning centre
and campus concept
• user needs have changed
14. 14
Research 2007-2008
• small scale survey in the
building students) and on
campus (30 students) /
brainstorm sessions
• strinking: difference between
involvement and student
satisfaction
• wishes: better coffee, seats,
power outlets, more scanners &
printers, fun!, Starbucks, 24/7,
High Tech, The place to be,
Living Room
• web-based visualisation

Ambition
‘Support others within TU Delft
Library in the development of an
ambition that the Library is
positioned as an educational and
inspiring learning environment
where users like to COME AND
STAY.’
