Before We Begin…
How much experience do you have with Twitter?
• What’s Twitter?
• A little bit.
• I know my way around it.
• I use it frequently.
• I can no longer type sentences of > 140 characters.

We’ll get to it!

We Only Have 40 More Minutes!
Today we’ll explore the basics of Twitter.
Along with some examples of how we use it in our
work.
We can’t cover everything. But we’ll answer your
questions.
We’re happy to come back next year!

Why Twitter?
It’s a unique opportunity to:
1. Engage with colleagues (strong & weak tie)
2. Disseminate ‘calls to action’ to large audiences
3. Increase awareness of issues
4. Build and strengthen communities
5. Promote learning from events
6. Learn from and about others

Let’s Talk Twitter: An Overview
It’s a social network that lets users write and read
online posts – tweets!
Tweets are limited to 140 characters.
There are 241 million active users (Dec 31, 2013).
It’s now an essential communication tool.

Let’s Talk Twitter: Handles
Handle = username = @DrSusanShaw
Create one that reflects who you are.
Be memorable. Try to keep it short.
Keep it pretty.

Let’s Talk Twitter: @
The @ is used before a handle to identify accounts.
If you misspell the handle or forget the @, the person
will not be notified about your tweet. Your followers
will also not be able to click the link.

The # is used to organize information so that it is easy
to find.

They can help you find popular conversations taking
place around you.
Common hashtags: #stroke, #sepsis, #cdnhealth, #bchc
Fun hashtags:

It’s Twitter’s version of a private message.

Twitter’s version of saving tweets that you want
to see again.

Lists help you group people you are following by
any topic you desire.

Let’s Talk Twitter: Common Images

What Happens if You Make a Mistake?
It’s probably not a big deal.
You can delete tweets.
But it’s quite alright to send out a second tweet
that corrects your previous mistake.

Some Things to Keep in Mind
People are more likely to value your tweets if they
include relevant and interesting content.
Be engaging. Ask questions, respond to others
and crowdsource.
Try to keep tweets under 120 characters.

Be nice. Give credit with a RT and mention those
involved in an event, article, etc. that you tweet
about.
Tweet as little or as frequently as you like.
Tweet when you like.

Share links. Keep them short.
Keep your tweets legible. Avoid shorthand like gr8
and u. Acronyms are not pretty.

Each chat has a guest host and topic related to
improving the quality of health care.
Always on the last Wednesday of every month at
9am PST / 12PM EST.

Example:
Disseminate calls to action.
Campaign has been recognized throughout the NHS
and around the world.
In 2014: 13,000 tweets and 19 million impressions.

Twitter is great for:
• Live tweeting at events - #QS14
• Sharing links to presentation files
• Follow ongoing developments, resources, etc.

Look for hashtags.
Who is followed by the people you follow?
Who else is on lists that you are a member of?

Be Responsible, and Trust Yourself
People are watching. (Dun Dun Dun)
Maybe you should have separate professional and
personal accounts.
It’s about common sense.

Be Responsible, and Trust Yourself
There are resources that can help you, like social
media guidelines:
• Often available through organizations and
professional bodies.
• Information about the context and benefits of
using social media.
• What to be aware of and processes to follow.
• Principles to guide the use of social media in
your professional capacity.
