Leave it to Ms. Garst to so graciously and generously root for her peers! This
is an exceptional line-up of those women who have made such a positive
impact on the social media landscape. There are no cookie-cutter clones
here, either! These superstars have personality! They are an extraordinary
group of individuals who remember to keep the “social” in social media. They
lead the way by example, and they are always willing to share their

I can think of three you are really missing out on. Tamara McCleary –
@tamaramccleary – is a powerhouse on social media. Rachel Miller –
@rachelloumiller – of Pipeliner and MillennialCEO should also be on this list,
she is well known and is heavily engaged. Melissa Stewart – @melissaonline
– is also very deserving.
Hopefully I don’t sound too much like a cheerleader for these three, but I
dabble in some social analytics and these three have engagement numbers
that would make most women on the list above envious (if you are looking at
social media metrics – fav’s per 1,000 / RT’s per 1,000, etc.).
Great list, but many more deserving!

Sorry, but this seems like a misguided effort. If your goal is to link to smart
people (who happen to be women) and help your readers make connections,
maybe you could link to their social profiles and list some ways they like to
mentor other women. As it is now, it reads very “white” and a bit “light” –
would you feature men with duck face poses?
Hmm, sorry … but you lost me at the “girl” hashtag and “I don’t know about
you but I LOVE lists.” This one feels link bait-y, even though I have learned
from and spent time with a few of the “rocking” women on your list.
Maybe I need some more action-oriented new blog posts or maybe I’m full of
it.

Hi Kim
I don’t like subjective lists like this. When I see them from bloggers or
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API
marketers or even big time trade pubs I just feel they are pretty thin and used
either as linkbait or to brown nose. I am a champion of the ladies. Ask
anyone. But my view of success in social and many people in socials view is
different. Unless you show me ‘anyone male or female’ helped clients
increase sales or reduce costs..concrete results….to me they failed. Having a
successful book or being a key noter (most of the speakers at Social Media
World in San Diego I would never pay to see speak) means nothing. Some of
the books written by people you list I would never recommend to others.
Persona brands died at least two years ago. I fully know, admire and respect
some on this list. Others I feel differently about as more self promoters than
client helpers and others while it is nice to see them listed and learn who
they are I certainly would need to investigate to see what my view is. And
anyone who Forbes or Mashable highlights is a hige red flag. No serious
business person reads those equivalent of People Magazine. If you are
involved in Facbook Marketing (which is just paid advertising now) and still
promoting brand pages you have zero credibility with me. If you are in
content marketing for SEO same. I will trump your content with my AdWords
100% of the time…faster and cheaper with higher conversion rates.
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API
My point is while you might get plenty of traffic and shares you also turn off a
lot of people…men and women. I found this because a friend ‘And
accomplished Female’ shared this with a group of marketers I am in and we
all discussed how much we hate these lists. Dark sharing. I am bringing it to
light.
I would rather you pick individuals and highlight their work for clients and
show what they did to benefit clients vs themselves because to me that is
true credibility. The best work is done off line not on. Using social media for
yourself or personal branding means nothing in my world. I know most of
the last Gen of rockstars were men. Brogan. Solis. Armano. Kawasaki and
many lesser people like Collier for example etc But guess what. I never found
anything they wrote of value for me or my clients and much was fraudulent!
Maybe nice guys but valueless as marketers.Wealthier than me but frauds to
me. But how may lists have they been in?
So just my thoughts not meaning to attack you versus the actual fact people
write these. As I said an in depth interview or profile with real success for
clients is what I seek. Show me that I will always share and always follow.
Thank you.

Congratulations to all of the amazing women who made this list! I’m sure
they are extremely deserving, but I can’t help but notice the lack of diversity
here. There is no mention of any of the very influential ladies of color who
rock that I personally follow or identify with, or even ladies of color who I
don’t follow. It personally makes me feel left out of feminist movements like
#LikeAGirl, even though I personally identify greatly with it.
As I’ve gotten deeper into feminism I’ve found this to be an ongoing problem
that I continuously run into; many feminist publications seem to push for
solidarity with, celebrate, and defend only white women, even when referring
to issues that all women face. To a WOC feminist like myself this feels like a
slight; it feels like erasure, it feels like exclusion. Perhaps it was not
intentional, but I wish that the author had worked to diversify her list, or to
lengthen it to include other amazing women that don’t look like her.

Thanks for listing me KIm! I would have to add a lady from Australia who is
doing cool things in the digital space – her name is Fiona Lucas from
irespectonline.com (you may have met her) – she is an online reputation
strategist and she has also written an awesome book FutureProof Your Kids.
She was voted one of the most Clickable Women of 2014 by a major site here
and is one to watch! And of course I agree with all your gals listed here, and
also Jenny Brennan deserves to be there as she is doing great things!

Hi Kim,
Thanks so much for sharing this awesome list! I follow many of these ladies
on social media, and read their blogs as well, so I know how fabulous they
are!
I’m just a little disappointed that there isn’t one black woman on this list. I
find that we are missing in a lot of these types of lists on various, popular
social media marketing blogs, which saddens me. I’m sure that there are lots
of fantastic black women in the social media marketing space, that are killing
it too! Anyhow, just a thought. I hope that, in the near future, lists like these
will be more ethnically diverse.

concerned – I have to agree with the ‘turn off’ effect of ‘Women in___’.
I am a human in Social Media marketing – I do not want to be singled out as
female. I am good at my job because I am good at my job.
It still smacks of (and I am aware of the #LikeaGirl hashtag) the outdated ‘not
bad for a girl’ commentary.
I personally loath ‘women in business’ type groups etc as it maintains the
divide and is anti-feminist in my book.

Congratulations to the all the ladies mentioned in your list. I am disappointed
at the lack of diversity. I find it difficult that not one African American was
worthy of your accolades. As a whole, minorities were highly
underepresented. A fact that unfortunately haunts many speaker panels and
lists. Perhaps next year you will make it a point to go outside the familiar and

Dear Kim, Hi! I love lists too and I find them very insightful on multiple levels.
One of the greatest insights lists offer is seen in what is not listed, not
included, what is in effect relegated to the negative space. In art and design
we understand that negative space shapes, moulds and defines the actual
boundaries of positive space. In this instance your list’s exclusion of women
of color, it’s centering of women who appear to be phenotypically Caucasian-
white in the positive space of inclusion and exclusivity is definitive and by
default and/or design relegates women of color to the negative space. This is
insightful from a marketing perspective as just one demographic sector you
relegated to the negative space covers an estimated 17.8 million African-
American women. The estimated overall buying power of the black
community is expected to exceed $1Trillion in 2015. Marketing, sales,
coaching and consulting gurus should be examining how many consumer
dollars are in that negative space, what percentage of those dollars can be
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API
captured and what approaches, strategies and techniques are most effective
and efficient. Those that do not should critically re-examine their status as
subject matter experts-positive space list inclusion notwithstanding.

Paula, I love highlighting ANYONE who is doing an
amazing job in the social space, regardless of color. If you

  • 32. pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API Mark Stevens says February 5, 2015 at 8:19 pm I can think of three you are really missing out on. Tamara McCleary – @tamaramccleary – is a powerhouse on social media. Rachel Miller – @rachelloumiller – of Pipeliner and MillennialCEO should also be on this list, she is well known and is heavily engaged. Melissa Stewart – @melissaonline – is also very deserving. Hopefully I don’t sound too much like a cheerleader for these three, but I dabble in some social analytics and these three have engagement numbers that would make most women on the list above envious (if you are looking at social media metrics – fav’s per 1,000 / RT’s per 1,000, etc.). Great list, but many more deserving! Reply

  • 36. pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API Adam Zand says February 6, 2015 at 12:20 am Sorry, but this seems like a misguided effort. If your goal is to link to smart people (who happen to be women) and help your readers make connections, maybe you could link to their social profiles and list some ways they like to mentor other women. As it is now, it reads very “white” and a bit “light” – would you feature men with duck face poses? Hmm, sorry … but you lost me at the “girl” hashtag and “I don’t know about you but I LOVE lists.” This one feels link bait-y, even though I have learned from and spent time with a few of the “rocking” women on your list. Maybe I need some more action-oriented new blog posts or maybe I’m full of it. Reply Kim Garst says February 6, 2015 at 9:58 am

  • 42. pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API marketers or even big time trade pubs I just feel they are pretty thin and used either as linkbait or to brown nose. I am a champion of the ladies. Ask anyone. But my view of success in social and many people in socials view is different. Unless you show me ‘anyone male or female’ helped clients increase sales or reduce costs..concrete results….to me they failed. Having a successful book or being a key noter (most of the speakers at Social Media World in San Diego I would never pay to see speak) means nothing. Some of the books written by people you list I would never recommend to others. Persona brands died at least two years ago. I fully know, admire and respect some on this list. Others I feel differently about as more self promoters than client helpers and others while it is nice to see them listed and learn who they are I certainly would need to investigate to see what my view is. And anyone who Forbes or Mashable highlights is a hige red flag. No serious business person reads those equivalent of People Magazine. If you are involved in Facbook Marketing (which is just paid advertising now) and still promoting brand pages you have zero credibility with me. If you are in content marketing for SEO same. I will trump your content with my AdWords 100% of the time…faster and cheaper with higher conversion rates.
  • 43. pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API My point is while you might get plenty of traffic and shares you also turn off a lot of people…men and women. I found this because a friend ‘And accomplished Female’ shared this with a group of marketers I am in and we all discussed how much we hate these lists. Dark sharing. I am bringing it to light. I would rather you pick individuals and highlight their work for clients and show what they did to benefit clients vs themselves because to me that is true credibility. The best work is done off line not on. Using social media for yourself or personal branding means nothing in my world. I know most of the last Gen of rockstars were men. Brogan. Solis. Armano. Kawasaki and many lesser people like Collier for example etc But guess what. I never found anything they wrote of value for me or my clients and much was fraudulent! Maybe nice guys but valueless as marketers.Wealthier than me but frauds to me. But how may lists have they been in? So just my thoughts not meaning to attack you versus the actual fact people write these. As I said an in depth interview or profile with real success for clients is what I seek. Show me that I will always share and always follow. Thank you.

I’m sure they are extremely deserving, but I can’t help but notice the lack of diversity here. There is no mention of any of the very influential ladies of color who rock that I personally follow or identify with, or even ladies of color who I don’t follow. It personally makes me feel left out of feminist movements like #LikeAGirl, even though I personally identify greatly with it. As I’ve gotten deeper into feminism I’ve found this to be an ongoing problem that I continuously run into; many feminist publications seem to push for solidarity with, celebrate, and defend only white women, even when referring to issues that all women face. To a WOC feminist like myself this feels like a slight; it feels like erasure, it feels like exclusion. Perhaps it was not intentional, but I wish that the author had worked to diversify her list, or to lengthen it to include other amazing women that don’t look like her. Reply

I follow many of these ladies on social media, and read their blogs as well, so I know how fabulous they are! I’m just a little disappointed that there isn’t one black woman on this list. I find that we are missing in a lot of these types of lists on various, popular social media marketing blogs, which saddens me. I’m sure that there are lots of fantastic black women in the social media marketing space, that are killing it too! Anyhow, just a thought. I hope that, in the near future, lists like these will be more ethnically diverse.

I am a human in Social Media marketing – I do not want to be singled out as female. I am good at my job because I am good at my job. I personally loath ‘women in business’ type groups etc as it maintains the divide and is anti-feminist in my book. Reply Kim Garst says February 23, 2015 at 12:07 pm Thanks for your comments Reply

I love lists too and I find them very insightful on multiple levels. One of the greatest insights lists offer is seen in what is not listed, not included, what is in effect relegated to the negative space. In art and design we understand that negative space shapes, moulds and defines the actual boundaries of positive space. In this instance your list’s exclusion of women of color, it’s centering of women who appear to be phenotypically Caucasian- white in the positive space of inclusion and exclusivity is definitive and by default and/or design relegates women of color to the negative space. This is insightful from a marketing perspective as just one demographic sector you relegated to the negative space covers an estimated 17.8 million African- American women. The estimated overall buying power of the black community is expected to exceed $1Trillion in 2015. Marketing, sales, coaching and consulting gurus should be examining how many consumer dollars are in that negative space, what percentage of those dollars can be
