Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. We are going to be starting the Diary of Anne Frank.Today I will be giving some background knowledge on what was going on at the time so we will be prepared when we begin reading.
  2. We need to understand what happened before to understand how the Holocaust startedWWI or The Great war began the war inAugust 1914The CentralPowers (consisting of …) started the war because their empires were declining so they invaded Serbia, Belgium, and Luxembourg to gain more controlPicture of German soldiers at the Battle of Marne
  3. The allies were not happy about the invasions so they retaliatedThe Russian Empire collapsed in March 1917Germany agreed to cease fire on Nov. 11, 1918 (Armistice Day)At the end of the war, German, Russian, Austro-Hungary, and Ottoman empires were defeted militarily and politicallyPicture of French Soldiers inDieffmatten, Germany
  4. The break up of the empires in Europe resulted in the Treaty of Versailles and the beginning of the League of Nations (put in place so another war like that would ever happen again)Disarmament: no tanks, air force or submarines allowed. Rhineland area de-militatisedTerritorial Clauses: union with Austria forbiddenHitler came out and promised to raise Germany back up to its formal glory (pre WWI)Germany was now in significant debt – like the great depression
  5. Radio recordingof Chamberlain declaring war on Germany after Germany invades Poland on September 1, 1939(listen to first 40 sec)
  6. His dictatorship was made possible because of his position as Reich President (head of state), Reich Chancellor (head of government), and Fuehrer (head of Nazi party)Hitler saw the racially superior as people who descended from Atlantis (great warrior people) who had a light hair color and light eye color
  7. In many instances we only hear about Jewish people being sent to concentration camps. However, Hitler targeted many more groups than just one. He wanted to eliminate everyone that was not part of the Aryan race (people with light eyes and hair colors).Picture of Auschwitz gate
  8. Hard-labor camps were camps where the prisoners were forced to do labor like breaking rock or digging holesTransit camps were places that people were divided. They did not stay there long. The people were put on trains to go to either hard-labor camps or killing centers.Killing Centers were places where people were killed right away either by execution, gun line, or gas chamber
  9. Resistance groups were organized groups that resist civil order and stability within a well established governmentAll the groups listed resisted the Central Powers within areas that were occupiedThe picture is of a group of resistors.Soviet Partisans, Yugoslav Partisans, and Polish Home Army – largest resistance movements in WWIIThere are different types of resistance such as sabotage, raids, helping people go into hiding, listening to the BBC radio, forging documents and much more. The ones that we will see most in Anne Frank’s Diary are helping people go into hiding and listening to the BBC radio. There was a huge risk for resisting the Nazis. If you resisted you could be put into a Concentration Camp, prison, or even killed. What is a Concentration Camp?
  10. This is an interactive map of the battles of WWIIThe picture is a map of Europe and northern Africa. The red is the largest area that Germany expanded during WWII. The yellow is neutral territory (Switzerland) and the green in unoccupied land.
