  2. 2. 4/10/2013 Designing for Cross-Channel IA is everywhere. that is so deep. and broad. whoa. 2 SI658 Information Architecture
  3. 3. Designing for Cross-Channel stuff I like about this chapter 4/2/2013  It gives us a framework to think holistically about Information Architecture across channels, which is a really BIG problem, and can be overwhelming.  discrete criteria = manageable task 3 SI658 Information Architecture
  4. 4. Designing for Cross-Channel 4/10/2013 stuff I DON’T like about this chapter  I have taken math classes, so  graphs with a y-axis, x-axis, and arrows imply dependent relationships between variables. They don’t mean it like this. They are just making a chart.  So in your mind, take off the arrows and any references to an “axis”. Now you have a square you can put some stuff on.  Take away: ignore all the psuedo-math diagrams. 4 SI658 Information Architecture
  5. 5. Designing for Cross-Channel 4/10/2013 just look at figure 9.8, the “CHU cube”  evaluate the user experience for discrete user tasks based on the five heuristics across channels. 5 SI658 Information Architecture
  6. 6. Designing for Cross-Channel channels, channels everywhere  These will change per company/project:  the NUMBER of channels touched  WHAT channels are touched  that is okay  but EVERY business should:  THINK about which channels make sense  ensure the UX across channels is awesome  revisit this often 4/10/2013 6 SI658 Information Architecture
  7. 7. Designing for Cross-Channel HEURISTICS  place-making  consistency  resilience  reduction  correlation 4/10/2013 7 SI658 Information Architecture
  8. 8. Designing for Cross-Channel resilience  digital environments can learn from our behavior, habits, preferences, and anticipate what we want.  aka the creepy one  maintain a dialog between channels, apply learnings across channels to predict needs  adapt to changing needs based on context  support multiple strategies for tasks  SLOWLY change foundations over time 4/10/2013 8 SI658 Information Architecture
  9. 9. Designing for Cross-Channel modern libraries - resilient 4/10/2013  digital catalog, requests, renewals  new media types: movies, digital books, art, music  community support  account: history of what I’ve read  reviews, digital previews 9 SI658 Information Architecture
  10. 10. Designing for Cross-Channel correlation – they mean it like this  showing connection between two basically not-the- same things  NOT correlation: 4/10/2013  correlation! 10 SI658 Information Architecture
  11. 11. Designing for Cross-Channel tips from Samantha Starmer  have a vision (unified approach/goal)  centralize content creation: “write once, publish many times”  enact real process change (this is hard)  optimize customer UX 1st, map to backend processes 2nd  need the right SYSTEMS to support an integrated approach (this is hard)  develop HOLISTIC IA for the full information ecology 4/10/2013 11 SI658 Information Architecture
  12. 12. Designing for Cross-Channel Kars Alfrink says interesting stuff  magic circle: can do things in digital life that will get you jailed in real life  geo-caching: just like the hobo code  adaptive design: supporting re-appropriation of devices, their environments  re-place space 4/10/2013 12 SI658 Information Architecture
  13. 13. Wrap Up OMG! Only one more class!? 4/10/2013 13 SI658 Information Architecture

  15. 15. Designing for Cross-Channel Next week’s agenda  10 min intro, class biz  everyone evaluates me  GROUP PRESENTATIONS! (we will take 1-2 short breaks) 4/10/2013  10 min crying, goodbyes, giving me flowers/candy 15 SI658 Information Architecture
