7. *Fr. Julian Malumbres in his Historia de Cagayan states that
chronicles of Cagayan assert that the first Spanish explorers
came into the Valley by way of the original mouth of the
Cagayan river, now the present site of Mission, Municipality of
Buguey. It is said that at that time the mouth of the river as
well as the shores of the lagoon abound with tagay trees,
hence the place was known as Catagayan. Gradually, for
convenience of pronunciation the shortened Cagayan,
permanently became the name of the province which was
organized as one political subdivision of the archipelago in
1583 and which comprised the whole Cagayan Valley.

Tuguegarao City is accessible by provincial bus. There are daily or
overnight buses from Caloocan or Cubao in Metro Manila. The trip will

foreign tourists arrivals in Cagayan Valley increased by 625
percent year-on-year in 2013, with Chinese topping the list
of visitors. Blessida Diwa, DOT director for Region 2, said
91,974 recorded foreign tourists visited the region’s tourism
destinations or an increase of 625 percent from 12,694 in
2012. Based on records, Chinese arrivals remained the
biggest with 78,386 followed by Americans with 20,514.
Travellers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, United
Kingdom, Canada, India and Germany also flocked to the
fine beaches in Santa Ana town and the Callao Caves in
Peñablanca town, both located in Cagayan province.
