What happens during
   REM Sleep???
    -An altered state of consciousness

          By Marcie Vandegrift
Defining REM Sleep

A period of sleep characterized by rapid
periodic twitching movements of the eye
muscles and other physiological changes, such
     as accelerated respiration and heart
rate, increased brain activity, and muscle
                  relaxation.
R.E.M.
Heart Rate

         The heart rate
         increases and
         becomes more
         vigorous
         depending on the
         type of dream
         you are having.
Accelerated Respiration

An abnormally
rapid rate of
breathing, usua
lly more than
25 breaths/min.
Brain Activity

The use of neurotransmitters keep our brain very
            active during REM sleep.
Muscle Relaxation

         During REM sleep
         relaxation of the
         muscles of are so
intense that it is as if
         the muscles are
         paralyzed.
