Students and Library as partners in innovation
Experiences From User Driven Innovation
and User Experience design

The New Libraries
UIO’s 12 small science department libraries were refurbished and
remade into 3 new modern libraries 2009-2011
• The Science Library, Informatics library and Museum library
• Time for new kinds of services and outreach?
• New partners?
• New fun gadgets emerged on the market!
New Libraries– New Library Services?
The New Collaboration
In 2011 a new type of collaboration started with Department of
Informatics (IFI)
• Library is one of many partners for students of interaction design
• Library’s participation is studied by IFI-researchers
• This presentation is about our involvement with the students “at ground
floor”
• Present: two ph.d. students and a larger effort to explore, adapt and develop
User Experience tools to libraries.
New Libraries– New Library Services?
User Driven Innovation 2012-2013
Students develop for peers– not librarians
• Librarians should not influence the design
Librarians were the facilitators and the support for the student
developers:
• Helped programming interfaces and APIs
• Were present at workshops
• Provided equipment, gift cards, answered questions
From User Driven Innovation to UX-design
User Experience design 2014 
Time for a new approach
• Library employees participate as “experts” in workshops (senior librarians,
programmer, head of digital services, designers…)
• In addition we are naturally still providing support, equipment and contact
• More fun for library-staff
From User Driven Innovation to UX-design
The goal of the app was to modernize and ease access of
books for students at the Science Library.

“How can I borrow a book using my phone?”
Master degree by Yvonne Edvartsen, UiO (Spring 2014).
The Science Library helped develop a protoype app for
borrowing books.
The app works by reading the book’s RFID tag,
and through APIs, register the loan to the user in the
BIBSYS ILS.
Maybe this will be the way of loaning books in the
library of the future?
Real life application
Realfagsbiblioteket – search and retrieve app
Went live autumn 2013 and is regularly being used and
downloaded.
Currently total downloads is 610 on iPhone and
302 on Android.
Plan to include the functionality of the beacon
exhibition.

Students
We are exited every autumn!
• Most students are dedicated and appear professional!
• Usually a varied set of skills at each group
• Different amount of time possible to use on course
• Different level of experience
• The Internal dynamics of the groups will vary
• Do not always prefer to work with library-staff or make contact
• Questionnaire fatigue – both asking and being asked to answer
Experiences
From prototypes to implementations
The students sign an agreement on the use of project assignments
(important!)
What did the students do, what did we do?
When to further develop student’s products and prototypes?
• Are the students new products interesting to build upon?
• Will the work give us new skills?
•  and the product still be attractive after the “production time”?
Time – prioritization from both leaders and staff (5% or 100%?)
Money – imagine what we could do with more staff and hardware
Experiences
Collaboration
Being part of a multi-level collaboration is difficult
• What is our strategy, who decides what?
• UDI-experiences: hard to give heavy support and stay on the outside of the
process
• Commits the library to prioritize this line of innovation and design.
– Both from the leaders and the library-staff
• Competencies within programming is essential to have among library-staff
• Library staff need to be just as motivated as the students (even more)
But rewarding – the synergies are “flowing all over the place”
Experiences
Synergies
Most important of all : we are active, the library is active!
• Design and innovation is visible for the library users
• Students gain important competencies and experience for their CV
• The library gets access to new ideas, new friends, and new skills
• A lot easier to develop new products ourselves and to reuse and combine
• We can use the activity to promote ourselves
• “maker faire” – we now have a pool of different gadgets and software we
can use in other projects
• We dare to make mistakes
Experiences
Participate We Must!

  • 29. The Beaconing Using Estimote Beacons in the library Exhibition on the Rosetta comet mission. By entering the exhibition area, a welcome page is presented with instructions on how to walk to different posts.
  • 30. The Beaconing Using Estimote Beacons in the library Table one Purple Estimote beacon and books.
  • 31. The Beaconing Using Estimote Beacons in the library Table two Green Estimote beacon and books.
  • 32. The Beaconing Using Estimote Beacons in the library Table three Teal estimote beacon books and widescreen (!)
  • 33. “How can I borrow a book using my phone?” Master degree by Yvonne Edvartsen, UiO (Spring 2014). The Science Library helped develop a protoype app for borrowing books. The app works by reading the book’s RFID tag, and through APIs, register the loan to the user in the BIBSYS ILS. Maybe this will be the way of loaning books in the library of the future?
  • 34. Real life application Realfagsbiblioteket – search and retrieve app Went live autumn 2013 and is regularly being used and downloaded. Currently total downloads is 610 on iPhone and 302 on Android. Plan to include the functionality of the beacon exhibition.
  • 36. Students We are exited every autumn! • Most students are dedicated and appear professional! • Usually a varied set of skills at each group • Different amount of time possible to use on course • Different level of experience • The Internal dynamics of the groups will vary • Do not always prefer to work with library-staff or make contact • Questionnaire fatigue – both asking and being asked to answer Experiences
  • 37. From prototypes to implementations The students sign an agreement on the use of project assignments (important!) What did the students do, what did we do? When to further develop student’s products and prototypes? • Are the students new products interesting to build upon? • Will the work give us new skills? •  and the product still be attractive after the “production time”? Time – prioritization from both leaders and staff (5% or 100%?) Money – imagine what we could do with more staff and hardware Experiences
  • 38. Collaboration Being part of a multi-level collaboration is difficult • What is our strategy, who decides what? • UDI-experiences: hard to give heavy support and stay on the outside of the process • Commits the library to prioritize this line of innovation and design. – Both from the leaders and the library-staff • Competencies within programming is essential to have among library-staff • Library staff need to be just as motivated as the students (even more) But rewarding – the synergies are “flowing all over the place” Experiences
  • 39. Synergies Most important of all : we are active, the library is active! • Design and innovation is visible for the library users • Students gain important competencies and experience for their CV • The library gets access to new ideas, new friends, and new skills • A lot easier to develop new products ourselves and to reuse and combine • We can use the activity to promote ourselves • “maker faire” – we now have a pool of different gadgets and software we can use in other projects • We dare to make mistakes Experiences

Editor's Notes

  1. Thanks for the introduction! We are very happy to be here!
  2. At the science library things tend to happen all at once (after many years with no change at all). One large motivator has been the refurbishment and merging of 12 libraries into 3 new ones. The prospects of new settings helped prepare us for other changes as well. And as you all might remember – in 2009 – 2010 we were all starting to do this on large screens. If I’ve not misunderstood – this was also the start of our innovations projects at the University of Oslo Library and also at the Science Library branch. Our researcher Andrea Gasparini and Head of Science Library Live Rasmussen started up a project with i-pads and how students used them over time. This was interesting also for the interaction design students and their lecturer Alma Culen who took this further on When Alma Culen and Andrea Gasparini joined forces and started Andreas ph.d. With the library and innovation as main theme. And remember, Andrea were to study us, so we needed to test some new ideas as well – What would happen if we engaged the students to innovate new services and products for students – not librarians!
  3. In 2011 this took form of a participation in the interaction design course at the Department of Informatics In this course students learn to use the methodology appropriate for design in specific projects with external partners and the library was one of them. This 2011 start we may call a “pilot year” And now we will tell you what happened next. And it is important to notice, our presentation here is about library staff’s involvement with the students “at ground floor”. Andreas’ perspectives will show up later! At present the collaboration involves two ph.d. students and a larger effort to explore, adapt and develop User Experience tools to libraries. this presentation is about our involvement with the students “at ground floor”
  4. So from August 2012 we had the first real start: The collaboration was called “User driven innovation” And remember the students were to develop for their peers, not librarians – we did not want yet another librarian-initiated service the users did not want to use! The Library staff took part as facilitators and support for the student developers Helped programming interfaces and APIs Were present at workshops Provided equipment, gift cards, answered questions This very interesting approach gave us some good products, But also gave us some issues to address: it is difficult for students to be creative enough, And also for the non-participating library staff to gain ownership of the products. -this brings us over to the present approach: UX-design.
  5. Now Library staff can participate as “experts” in workshops (senior librarian, programmer, head of digital services, designers…) This means we have a more active role in the whole process. We may generate ideas with the students, not just observe them doing it. In addition we are naturally still providing support, equipment and contact And surpricingly: this is way more fun for us as ground floor partners!
  6. Before I give the floor to Kyrre, we have this slide that illustrates how many design processes we have generated for the library throug this collaboration Activity map of the last years involvment with the inf 2260 students.
  7. Our main contact through the semester is with the students, and with these last slides we will try to synthesize them for you: The last threee years have been very exiting each august! Will some of the groups choose the library as partner?? Which direction will their products take? 1 Most students are dedicated and appear professional But 2 They vary a lot and there is a different set of skills in each group 3 And they spend different amount of time on the course (from tripling the expected time to halfing it – not always a choice they make voluntarily) – difficult for us to estimate time for support 4 they of course have different skills and levels of experience –some are nearly fresh from high school, some are designers beforehand 5 as in all team-work internal dynamics of the groups has its own way of interferring 6 not all gruops prefer to take advantage of the help the library can offer -when 3 very active groups run around to develop and test their prototypes, they can experience questionnaire fatigue among respondents -
  8. From prototypes to implementations As soon as the semester is over many students leave town – then what with the intellectual property rights to the products? In our case the students signs an agreement on the use of project assignments (important!) – if not we risk to loose our input What did the students do, what did we do? – who had the idea who did the core programming? When to further develop student products and prototypes? Are the students new products interesting to build upon? Will the implementation give us new skills  and the product still be attractive after the “production time”? Time – prioritization from both leaders and staff Money – actually how much are we willing to spend? (what do we do if some of us get sick – hire a substitute?
  9. Being part of a multi-level collaboration is difficult What is our strategy, what is the departments strategy, what is who decides what? UDI-experiences: hard to give heavy support and stay on the outside of the process Commits the library to prioritize this line of innovation and design. Both from the leaders and the library-staff Competencies within programming is essential to have among library-staff Library staff need to be just as motivated as the students (even more) But rewarding – the synergies are flowing all over the place
