pushed up, the diaphragm and the chest cavity relax and return to its
original size and place. There is now less space and greater pressure

Breathing occurs because of the changes in air pressure
between the lungs and the atmosphere. The mechanism of
breathing in our body can be represented by the Bottled
Balloons model where each part can be compared to the
parts of the respiratory system who are involved in the
respiration process. The plastic bottle represents the chest
cavity, the straws act as the bronchi, the small balloons inside
the plastic bottle serves as the lungs and the big balloon at
the bottom of the plastic bottle is the diaphragm. As the
