Tableau started as a research project at Stanford University.
A team of researchers in the computer science department led by Chris Stolte (in the middle) and Pat Hanrahan (on the right) made some breakthrough advances in analytics
By way of background, Pat Hanrahan is one of the most accomplished computer scientists in the world. He is a member… Chris was one of his star Ph.D students in the late 90s’, focused on making databases easier to use.
In a moment of invention, they decided to combine research in computer graphics, databases systems and Human Computer Interaction into a single framework.
Great breakthroughs are often born from strange bedfellows – and Tableau is a great example. Combining the disparate fields of computer graphics, databases and HCI research turned out to be exactly the combination of technologies required to help people easily see and understand data.
Tableau Software’s mission is to help people see and understand data. It really couldn’t be simpler.
We believe making it easy for people to see and understand data represents one of the most important opportunities in computing this century
We believe there’s an opportunity to help people answer questions, solve problems and generate meaning from data in a way that has never before been possible.
And we believe there’s an opportunity to put that power into a much broader population of people.
