The document discusses the functions and types of stores departments in manufacturing organizations. It describes the key functions as planning for space and equipment, receiving and issuing materials, maintaining the store, and keeping records. The main types of stores are raw material stores, production stores, refrigerated stores for perishables, salvage stores, and flammable material stores. It also discusses centralized stores that serve the whole organization versus decentralized stores that serve individual departments, as well as a mixed centralization with sub-stores model.
7. Types of storages:-
Raw material
stores:-
This is where raw materials used in
the factory are stored. Usually,
this is the largest kind and the
location should be such that it is
situated alongside a railway, canal
or river. Where the deliveries are
by road, there must be adequate
space for trucks to move, turn and
park. If sufficient provision is not
made for quick and easy loading
or unloading, heavy demurrage
can result.
8. Production Store:-
Production also
requires a large number
of materials, generally
called "consumables", -
eye-shields, cutting
oils, abrasives, gloves,
aprons, jigs, small tools
etc. A store stocking
such items is called a
Production Store
9. Refrigerated stores:-
This type of store is used for storage
of perishable items like fruit, meat,
chemicals, medicine, vegetable, etc.
it further comprises:
Chilled space store, where the
temperature can be controlled
between 32 F and 50 F.
Freeze space store, where the
temperature can be controlled below
32 F
10. Salvage stores:-
Here materials rejected on the factory
floor are stored either with a view to
salvage them or to sell them as scrap.
Steel scrap is usually kept separately,
preferably in the open. Some metal
scrap like copper can be very costly
and should, therefore, be kept safely
in covered stores.
11. Flammable materials store:-
This is used for the storage of highly
combustive material like oil, paints,
etc. this store consists of separate
compartments partitioned by fire
walls, which is done with a view to
prevent movement of flames from
one area to another in the event of a
fire. These fire walls will normally
have a four hour fire resistance
rating. The main dependence for fire
protection is placed on an automatic
deluge type sprinkler system
connected to an adequate water
supply.
12. Stores location:-
Centralized stores:-
A centralized store is that store which
receives materials for and issues
them to all departments, divisions
and production floors of the
company. Such a store is only one in
the company which receives
materials for and issues to all who
need them. The materials required
for all the departments and branches
are stored and issued by only one
store.
13. Decentralized store:-
A decentralized store is that type
of store which receives materials
for and issues them to only one
department and not to the whole
company. The decentralized
store may be in many numbers in
the company, as each department
has its own such store.
Purchasing and handling of
materials are undertaken by each
and every department separately.
If the volume of material
activities is large, this type of
store is suitable because each
and every branch has their own
store for facilitating smooth
operations of their production
activities.
14. Centralization with sub-stores:-
This is a mixed store
system, a mix of
centralized and
decentralized stores.
Under this store system,
sub-stores are established
in different departments
according to the
requirement of the
company. Sub-stores are
maintained at each
department when the
central store is at a
distance from the
production department.
Such sub-stores are
managed and controlled
by the central store itself.
