GCSE Media Studies: INSET 2009  Media Studies GCSE .  Advertising  is a form of communication used in helping sell products and services. Typically it communicates a message including the name of the product or service and how that product or service could potentially benefit the consumer. Advertising often attempts to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume more of a particular  brand  of product or service. Modern advertising developed with the rise of mass production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

It works when certain web sites open a new  web browser  window to display  advertisements . The pop-up window containing an advertisement is usually generated by  JavaScript , but can be generated by other means as well
