- 2. How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
- 3. Only one, but the light bulb has to want to change
- 4. I thought I knew about leadership
- 5. I had led teams and projects
- 6. Sometimes with life and death responsibility.
- 7. I read business books
- 8. But LDO was not what I had expected
- 9. I was not the smartest
- 10. I was not the most experienced
- 11. I was not the most articulate
- 12. LDO was a wonderful start for our first month
- 13. It was a chance to learn about how
- 14. Thoughtful,
- 15. Knowledgeable,
- 16. And experienced our class is.
- 17. I had expected a highly-directed classroom experience
- 18. The professor would introduce a new leadership theory or technique
- 19. We would analyze a case with this new model
- 20. Class discussion would deepen our understanding
- 21. Once we had reached the correct conclusions, the professor would congratulate us on our achievement
- 22. Heh
- 23. Babson is not ancient Greek Socratic teaching
- 24. The learning did not come from a book
- 25. It came from the realization that I needed to learn
- 26. And from the realization of my limited perspective
- 27. And from the realization that there was not always one right way
- 28. Class discussions challenged me
- 29. They brought me out of myself
- 30. And I saw there was so much more to learn
- 31. Listening to learn from a group is hard
- 32. It is different from being a leader or facilitator
- 33. But when I let go of ego, and listened to learn from my peers
- 34. I felt stupider
- 35. But also more wise
- 36. I had thought that there was a best way to manage
- 37. And a best way to lead
- 38. My books told me that was wrong
- 39. But only as part of the class did I learn it was wrong
- 40. Within a group, feeling stupider is not scary, or lonely
- 41. The group provides the confidence to push yourself and explore
- 42. What kind of leader am I?
- 43. What kind of leader can I be?
- 44. What kind of leader do I want to be?
- 45. I am an expressive
- 46. When I am uncomfortable, I dominate
- 47. That happened during the creativity project And I didn’t like it
- 48. When things get really bad, I retreat
- 50. There is a chasm between knowledge and ability
- 51. And though I learn from reading and talking, knowledge alone is not enough
- 52. I want to be an experienced leader
- 53. I want to be a practiced leader
- 54. And I hope that practice and experience will teach me to be thoughtful and aware
- 55. I used to think people only changed after crises
- 56. That only a crisis could make someone want to change
- 57. Keller made a mistake, and he was able to change
- 58. I want to be a leader who makes mistakes
- 59. I have made mistakes
- 60. I will make mistakes
- 61. The group allows us to make mistakes
- 62. As long as we commit to becoming better leaders
- 63. Action planning
- 67. Taking risks
- 68. Some success and some failure
- 69. And the confidence to practice
- 70. Every day a little stupider
- 71. And every day a little more wise
- 72. And every day making more mistakes
- 73. And every day willing to listen
- 74. And learn
