58. Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp
Royal Museum of Fine Arts, AntwerpThe earliest nucleus of the Koninklijk Museum
voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Museum of Fine Arts) has its origin with the Antwerp
Guild of St Luke to which the city's artists belonged between 1382 and 1773. In 1663
an academy was founded under the guild's auspices. When the guilds were
disbanded in 1773, the Academy of Fine Arts took possession of the guild's gallery.
The rather limited composition of the Academy's museum started to grow in the
19th century through generous donations. The passed into the ownership of the
state in 1927.
The collection preserved at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp provides a
representative picture of art produced in the region between the fourteenth century
and the present day. The collection as a whole now numbers more than 7,200 works
of art, consisting of 3,200 painting, 3,600 drawings and prints, and 400 sculptures.
59. Mayer van den Bergh Museum, Antwerp
Mayer van den Bergh MuseumThe collection of this museum was assembled by Fritz
Mayer (1858-1901) and his mother Henriette van den Bergh (1838-1920). Fritz Mayer was
raised in a wealthy and aristocratic environment and seemed destined for a career in
diplomacy. However, when his father died in 1879, he broke off his studies to live with
his mother. He devoted himself entirely to his passion - collecting works of art. He was
assisted in the endeavour by his mother, to whom he was extremely close. This bond
was emphasized when he added her family name to his own. Fritz Mayer van den Bergh
was knighted in 1888.
In the early part of his collector's career Fritz Mayer van den Bergh bought a wide variety
of works of art, with a strong preference for numismatics and textile art. However, his
interest was not limited to the decorative arts, he began to buy paintings and sculptures
in a very early stage, first in Italy and later in Holland and Flanders.
The collection is housed in a building looking like a 16th-century townhouse. In reality it
was purpose-built in 1903-04 after the early death of Fritz van den Bergh by his mother
who is the true founder of the museum.
60. Rockox House, Antwerp
Façade of the Rockox HouseNicolaas Rockox was a great humanist, Burgomaster
of Antwerp nine times in the first half of the 17th century, and friend and patron of
Rubens. Together with his contemporaries Rubens, Plantin, Moretus, Jordaens
and Snyders, Rockox was one of the key figures who helped to create the spirit of
his times, at the height of the Baroque period in Antwerp.
Nicolaas Rockox's house was restored in 1970 to its former splendour as a tribute
to the Flemish region. The house was then furnished with art works and furniture
which could have been found in a patrician house in the 17th century. The result is
an outstanding example of a Flemish interior of the 17th century, displaying the
best that Flemish artists and craftsmen of the period had to offer.
