LEVEL OF EFFECTIVENESS OF SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS IN TEACHING ARALING
PANLIPUNAN TO SECOND YEAR STUDENTS IN BATAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL S.Y
2012 – 2013

Submitted by:

CHAPTER 1
The Problem and its Background

Introduction
Teacher is not a dispenser of knowledge or a person in charge of the educating that goes on in a
classroom. Moreover, is one of producing the climate providing the resources, stimulating the students to
explore, investigate and seek answer, in a rich environment than a director (Howes, 2007)
The teacher must also see the nobility and capacity in each student recognizing that a lack of
opportunity is different from lack of capacity. Competent teacher produces excellent students (Costa AL).
Tan 2002) stated that effective instructions in studies can only be realized when the teacher is
efficient in the subject content and in the methods of teaching the subject. One of the key points of social
studieseducation is not only to teach people studies of facts, but on how to learn social inquiry to equip
The country’s students for the challenges not only of higher education, also in the lifelong learning.
Moreover, according to Jacetot (1997) teaching is something that takes place only when learning
does. No matter what the teacher is doing in her class, if the students are not learning something
significant, she is not teaching.
Furthermore, Bernardo (2007) posited that the supreme valve of a teacher lies not only in the
regular performances of routine duties, but in his power to lead and inspire his students through the
influence of his/her own mental and moral personality example.
According to the result of Regional Achievement Test 2012 – 2013, Bataan National High School
had a low performance with regards in Social Studies Subject.
Based on the different researchers about the performance of students in School, students usually
get low performance in social studies most especially in Asian History and World History. Student’s
achievements and performances are greatly attributed to the teacher’s performance.
In the reports of the study of (Mendoza and Monzon, 2003), research findings confirmed that
teacher quality appears to be the most important factor influencing student performance.
This poor student’s achievement has prompted educational researches worldwide to continuously
identify factors inside and outside the classroom affect student achievement; however experts claim that
the key factor in what comes out at goes on in the classroom.
Due to the aforementioned reasons, I would like to determine the determinants in the
effectiveness of Social Studies Teachers in the daily classroom situations. The re-searchers also want to
identify the variables that affect the effectiveness of the Social Studies Teachers.

Statement of the Problem
The general problem of the study is:
How do the selected factors affect the level of performance among social studies teacher in the Bataan
National High School SY 2012 – 2013?
Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. How may the social studies teachers be described in terms of:
1.1 gender;
2.2 age and
1.3 civil status?
2. What is the profile of social studies teacher in terms of:
2.1 educational qualification;
2.2 trainings and seminars attended and
2.3 work attitude?
3. How may the students be described in terms of:
3.1 age;
3.2 sex and
3.3 Grade Point Average (GPA)

4. How many the school be described in terms of:
4.1 facilities;
4.1.1 Accessibility;
4.1.2 Adequacy;
4.1.3 Functionality;
4.1.4 Availability

5. What is the level of teacher’s effectiveness in teaching as perceived by students and teacher’s
effectiveness in teaching as perceived by students and teachers themselves in terms work attitude?
6. Is there a significant relationship between teacher; students; school-related factors and Teacher’s
Effectiveness?

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be deemed important to the following:

Teachers•With the result of the study it can help them to identify and assess their selves if they
are an effective teacher. The study will help them to figure out their weaknesses in some areas in the field.
By them, they will be able to change or modify their attitude towards it or make some appropriate adjustments.
BSE Students•This study will help the student teachers to be aware and do some adjustments
earlier that they can make them a better and effective teacher. To diagnose what are the things they need
to do that can help them to have a faster learning.
Curriculum Makers•The outcome of the study may serve as a basis for possible innovations that
may strengthen and enrich the teacher program suited to the needs of the students.
Administrators•The study will help the administrators to assess and make same observations of how the
teaching effectiveness affect the student’s performance. By the observation it can also determine if the
methodologies and strategies is also effective or not. By then, they can do recommendations and
suggestions for the teachers that will help them to the competent.
High School Students•This study will help the high school students to be a competent one, if the teacher
is effective and efficient, is/her students will developed holistically. The student’s will become
systematic, intellectually and emotionally engaged in their lesson,
Future Researchers•The findings of this study will support further researchers concerning of the
effectiveness of the Social Studies teachers. It can be their basis and pattern that can help them with their
research for it to have strong foundation.

Scope and Delimitation
This study is focused on the factors affecting the teaching effectiveness of Social Studies teachers
in Bataan National High School SY 2012-2013.
It involved 22 sections with 6 social studies teachers. The researchers used stratified random
sampling in selecting student’s respondents.
On the other hand, the researchers use descriptive consolation method in the study employing
assessment tools and questionnaire’s gathering pertinent data and information.
Furthermore, the researchers want to determine the level of effectiveness of social studies teacher;
teacher related: student related and school related variables. The teacher’s related variables involved
personal (gender, age and civil status and professional attributes (field of specialization, education
qualification, trainings and seminars attended and work attitude. The school related variables involved
facilities (accessibility, functionality and availability. The students related variables involved (age, sex
and GPA).
In determining the teacher’s effectiveness of social studies teachers the researchers use the
Performance Appraisal for Teachers (PAST) from the DepEd rated by the principal of the said secondary
school in Bataan.
In determining the profile of social studies teachers such as: gender, age and civil status the
researcher use frequency and percentage distribution. The researchers use the same statistical method in
determining the teacher’s effectiveness in teaching social studies as perceived by students and teachers
themselves.
In determining if there is a significant relationship between teachers and students related factors,
teachers and school related factors and teachers and teacher related factors to the level of the effectiveness
of the teachers in the perception of the students and teacher’s on teaching social studies, the researcher
employed person(1) Product- Moment of correlation and t-test of significance.

Moreover, is one of producing the climate providing the resources, stimulating the students to explore, investigate and seek answer, in a rich environment than a director (Howes, 2007) The teacher must also see the nobility and capacity in each student recognizing that a lack of opportunity is different from lack of capacity. Competent teacher produces excellent students (Costa AL). Tan 2002) stated that effective instructions in studies can only be realized when the teacher is efficient in the subject content and in the methods of teaching the subject. One of the key points of social studieseducation is not only to teach people studies of facts, but on how to learn social inquiry to equip The country’s students for the challenges not only of higher education, also in the lifelong learning. Moreover, according to Jacetot (1997) teaching is something that takes place only when learning does. No matter what the teacher is doing in her class, if the students are not learning something significant, she is not teaching. Furthermore, Bernardo (2007) posited that the supreme valve of a teacher lies not only in the regular performances of routine duties, but in his power to lead and inspire his students through the influence of his/her own mental and moral personality example.
