Religion <ul><li>Religion was extremely important in the 18 th century, mostly Christian society </li></ul><ul><li>In Ghosts Ibsen is criticising religion and its main advocate Pastor Manders </li></ul><ul><li>Mrs Alving is opposite of Pastor Manders. She is a free thinker </li></ul><ul><li>The pastor refuses to listen to or accept ideas that go against his rigid beliefs </li></ul><ul><li>For example he condemns Oswald for saying that couples can have children and not be married. </li></ul><ul><li>Pastor has biased attitude toward women </li></ul><ul><li>Makes excuses for Mr Alving </li></ul><ul><li>He forced Mrs Alving to reconcile with her husband ins Gods best interest </li></ul><ul><li>Did not have sympathy for Mrs Alving during her marriage </li></ul><ul><li>The pastor is patronising and harsh </li></ul><ul><li>Religion needs to change and adapt to a more radical society </li></ul>
  3. 3. 18 th century society its rules and taboos <ul><li>‘ Ghosts’ comments on middle class society, the need for a stellar reputation </li></ul><ul><li>Tells us what is happening behind behind this false façade of perfection </li></ul><ul><li>Reveals taboos in society </li></ul><ul><li>The topics shocked an 18 th century audience </li></ul><ul><li>Ibsen wanted to make people realise consequences of suppression </li></ul><ul><li>‘ Ghosts’ are the consequences of hidden sins </li></ul><ul><li>Mrs Alving wants to reveal truth but cant </li></ul><ul><li>She may be radical in thought but not in action </li></ul><ul><li>Mrs Alving personifies Ibsens views. </li></ul><ul><li>She is deliberately made empathetic so we are more likely to agree with her over Manders </li></ul>

Sins of the Father <ul><li>Sins of the Father is a biblical idea </li></ul><ul><li>‘ The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son a thousand times’ </li></ul><ul><li>Mr Alving contracted syphilis which his son inherited </li></ul><ul><li>Oswald as Mr Alvings son is inheriting his sins </li></ul><ul><li>Mrs Alving believes we are all ghosts of our parents </li></ul><ul><li>We don’t just inherit DNA but also ideas and beliefs </li></ul><ul><li>You can live a perfect life but if one of your parents has made mistakes then you reap the consequences </li></ul>
