About This Session Introduce you to using Facebook for business. Introduce you to profiles vs. pages and when to use each. Show you examples of well done Facebook fan pages and the tools used to create them. Introduce you to ways you can promote your fan page to FB insiders and outsiders. Show you ways to enhance your fan page automatically so you can spend more time engaging and less time manually broadcasting.
Facebook Q&A How many of you have used Facebook before for business use? How many of you have used Facebook before for personal use? Do you find Facebook an easy medium to engage your audience members through?
The Facebook Landscape Facebook was launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates - all Harvard students. More than 400 million active users. 50% of the user base logs in daily. More than 25 billion pieces of content are shared each month.
Facebook’s Primary Features Profile Fan Page Groups Events Applications Ads
Facebook Profile
Facebook Profile 101 Ability to create a custom URL Can add applications to your profile Can add groups or events to your profile Can update automatically or manually Can not broadcast out a message to friends on a profile Can not use the events, attached to a profile, for business / marketing purposes Can not exceed 5,000 connections / friends
Facebook Profile 101 Applications can be added to the profile but it is recommended to build out and focus on a fan page - unlimited connections. On your profile, place an update that directs people to your fan page instead. Keep your profile public / open if using it for business so people see the direction to the fan page.
Important Profile Update Make sure to set your Public Profile URL to make linking to your profile easier.
Facebook Fan Page 101 Ability to create a custom URL Can add applications to your fan page Can add groups or events to your fan page Can update automatically or manually Unlimited connections / friends via fan page Can setup and market events via the fan page Flexibility in creating unique fan page experiences - perfect for companies & web personalities
Other Tips for Your Profile
Fan Page Customization FBML - Facebook Mark-Up Language - Allows you to create dynamic user experiences that are ‘coded’ into Facebook to provide interactivity Gary Vee’s page (example) is interactive and set as the opening page for his fan page - this increases interest level for fans
Fan Page Applications Notes: import your blog feed via RSS into Facebook to auto-update your fans (can also be done via the profile) YouTube Badge: showcase your channel’s videos or your fav videos on your fan page sidebar. Events: showcase previous and upcoming events you are involved with.
Fan Page Applications Facebook Static FBML: application allows you to add HTML / text to the sidebar of your fan page - perfect for opt-in boxes (for list building purposes) Slideshare: share presentations via FB. LinkedIn: connect your LI account to FB. Videos: upload and share videos with your FB community.
Other Benefits of Pages Pages allow multiple admins - you can have an assistant or a moderator help with the management. You can create ads for your Facebook pages to help them get more visibility. Pages allow you to view analytics - see how you are doing in terms of the FB numbers. Ability to change landing page on your profile - direct fans to a customized message.
Providing Value to an Audience Think about who will be coming to your fan page - what do they want? Provide unique, exciting and valuable content either manually or automatically via RSS. Engage, engage, engage.  A community does not want to be solely marketed at / broadcasted to.
Turning Fans Into Prospects FBML Box - add an opt-in box to convert fans onto an e-mail marketing list by providing a freebie of value. Use the TweetMeme plug-in on your blog and it will appear when you pull your RSS feed in - allows people to share content via Twitter. Use links to drive traffic back to your primary websites where people can purchase / hire.
Sending Targeted Messages Broadcast function allows for targeted messages to your fans.
Set Your Vanity URL Set a vanity URL for all profiles and pages. When you create new pages, be sure to set an easy to remember vanity URL immediately and use in marketing / promotions. Set it at - Facebook.com/username

My Experience with Facebook Walked by their first offices in Palo Alto, CA Joined their service when it was simple Banned from Facebook for “impersonating someone else” - created a YouTube video campaign to prove I was myself Use Facebook more for personal interaction than business - much prefer Twitter for business Disclaimer: I do not develop out my Facebook profile as much as other people do as my audience just isn’t there
  • 3. About This Session Introduce you to using Facebook for business. Introduce you to profiles vs. pages and when to use each. Show you examples of well done Facebook fan pages and the tools used to create them. Introduce you to ways you can promote your fan page to FB insiders and outsiders. Show you ways to enhance your fan page automatically so you can spend more time engaging and less time manually broadcasting.
  • 4. Facebook Q&A How many of you have used Facebook before for business use? How many of you have used Facebook before for personal use? Do you find Facebook an easy medium to engage your audience members through?
  • 5. The Facebook Landscape Facebook was launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates - all Harvard students. More than 400 million active users. 50% of the user base logs in daily. More than 25 billion pieces of content are shared each month.
  • 6. Facebook’s Primary Features Profile Fan Page Groups Events Applications Ads

Facebook Profile 101 Ability to create a custom URL Can add applications to your profile Can add groups or events to your profile Can update automatically or manually Can not broadcast out a message to friends on a profile Can not use the events, attached to a profile, for business / marketing purposes Can not exceed 5,000 connections / friends
  • 9. Facebook Profile 101 Applications can be added to the profile but it is recommended to build out and focus on a fan page - unlimited connections. On your profile, place an update that directs people to your fan page instead. Keep your profile public / open if using it for business so people see the direction to the fan page.
  • 10. Important Profile Update Make sure to set your Public Profile URL to make linking to your profile easier.

  • 13. Fan Page Customization FBML - Facebook Mark-Up Language - Allows you to create dynamic user experiences that are ‘coded’ into Facebook to provide interactivity Gary Vee’s page (example) is interactive and set as the opening page for his fan page - this increases interest level for fans
  • 14. Fan Page Applications Notes: import your blog feed via RSS into Facebook to auto-update your fans (can also be done via the profile) YouTube Badge: showcase your channel’s videos or your fav videos on your fan page sidebar. Events: showcase previous and upcoming events you are involved with.

Fan Page Applications Facebook Static FBML: application allows you to add HTML / text to the sidebar of your fan page - perfect for opt-in boxes (for list building purposes) Slideshare: share presentations via FB. LinkedIn: connect your LI account to FB. Videos: upload and share videos with your FB community.
  • 16. Other Benefits of Pages Pages allow multiple admins - you can have an assistant or a moderator help with the management. You can create ads for your Facebook pages to help them get more visibility. Pages allow you to view analytics - see how you are doing in terms of the FB numbers. Ability to change landing page on your profile - direct fans to a customized message.
  • 17. Providing Value to an Audience Think about who will be coming to your fan page - what do they want? Provide unique, exciting and valuable content either manually or automatically via RSS. Engage, engage, engage. A community does not want to be solely marketed at / broadcasted to.
  • 18. Turning Fans Into Prospects FBML Box - add an opt-in box to convert fans onto an e-mail marketing list by providing a freebie of value. Use the TweetMeme plug-in on your blog and it will appear when you pull your RSS feed in - allows people to share content via Twitter. Use links to drive traffic back to your primary websites where people can purchase / hire.
  • 19. Sending Targeted Messages Broadcast function allows for targeted messages to your fans.
  • 20. Set Your Vanity URL Set a vanity URL for all profiles and pages. When you create new pages, be sure to set an easy to remember vanity URL immediately and use in marketing / promotions. Set it at - Facebook.com/username
