3. Introduction
Amavata is the most crippling of the joint diseases. It
occurs throughout the world in all climates
First explained in Madhava Nidana, by Madhavakara.
Ama and vitiated Vata play the dominant role so it
is called as Amavata
The incidence of Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis) is
reported to be 1-2 % of general population with a
female to male ratio of 3:1.
4. Nidana & Samprapthi
Viruddahara means unwholesome foods or
combination of foods which effects adversely.
Poor digestion power, defective metabolism
Sedentary life style and also too much exercise
So affected defective metabolism with
the influence of nervous system also affects the normal
functioning, and the products of this reaches Dhamanis
(blood vessels) and circulates all over the body and
produces symptoms.
6. Severe AMAVATA features
Very difficult to tolerate when becomes severe. Can
also be considered as difficult to treat when aggravates
Severe pain in hand, foot, head, ankle, neck, low back,
knee and hip joints
Pain and swelling is seen in different parts of body
Pain will be severe as if bit by scorpion. (burning
sensation and pain as if hit by stick)

8. with the use of NSAID’s (Non Steroidal
Anti Inflammatory Drugs), glucocorticoids, DMARD’s
(Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs), treatment
remains unsatisfactory through modern system of
medicine. Patients are continuously looking with a hope
towards Ayurveda to overcome this challenge.
So the Ayurvedic medicinal herbs are moving to
mainstream
9. Pippali (Piper longum Linn.)
Pippali is one of the Rasayana drugs described
in Ayurveda. It has Agnidipana and Amapachana actions and is
helpful in the alleviation of Ama from the body which is the
main pathological factor in Amavata, i.e. rheumatoid arthritis.
Pippali alleviates Ama, the factor responsible
for Balabhrmsha or development of autoimmune disorders in
the body, resulting in the correction in immune system
activities. Pippali has rasayana and immunomodulator actions.
Thus, because of all these actions together, it plays an
important role in the Samprapti-vighatana of the Amavata, i.e.
rheumatoid arthritis.

10. Shunthi(Zingiber officinale Roscoe):
Shunthi due to its Katu Rasa and
Ushna Virya; is well known for
Vata-Shleshma Vibandhahara.
Shunthi possesses the basic quality of
Deepan and Pachan properties, which improve Jatharagni When
Jatharagni is improved, it leads to the formation of Dhatus and
checks the formation of Ama.
By virtue of Ushana Veerya, it digests and absorbs the
vitiated Ama by its Shoshana Karma.
Scientifically, it has been proved that Shunthi possesses
active principles of gingerol, dehydrozingerone, and gingerdione,
and they are potent inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis, indicating
the mechanism of an anti-arthritic effect.

11. Guduchi(Tinospora cordifolia Willd.) :
Guduchi possesses the qualities of Tikta, Kashaya Rasa,
Madhur Vipak, and Ushana Veerya. Guduchi have the dual
action of Vata Shamana and Bruhana, on the tissues,
especially the Asthi Dhatu.
Guduchi contains gycosides, whose activity
resembles that of nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory agents
producing anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities.

12. Rasona(Allium cepa Linn):
Rasona is a well-known Vata and Kaphahara.
It is also proved to have an anti-inflammatory effect.
A concentrate having allicin and allinase alkaloid proved
effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
Rasona is a rasayana according
to Bhavprakash and Madanpal and thus it is very useful for
treating the disease and also for maintaining the health of the
patients due to the chronic nature of the disease.

13. Haridra(Curcuma longa Linn.):
Curcuma longa, commonly known as Turmeric, has
antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin,
an alkaloid isolated from this plant, has anti-
inflammatory, anti-arthritic and anti-rheumatic
properties.
It also has beneficial effects on platelet
aggregation and vascular prostaglandin synthesis. The
activation of the adrenohypophysial axis may be
responsible for inhibition of late arthritic changes.

14. Dalbergia lanceolaria L.
This is a tree of Leguminacae family found
on the small hills throughout India. The botanical
description of the plant is available in wealth of india
and has also been described by Kirtikar and Basu.
This plant is popularly used for the
treatment of arthritis as folk medicine. The decoction
of leaves and tender branches of the plant mixed with
sugar and ghee is used every day for a month or so.
The seed oil has also been described to have anti-
Rheumatic property.

15. Semecarpus anacardium Linn.
(Bhallataka):
It is tree of Anacardiacae family
found in the lower level of Himalayan range.
It is popularly known as Marking nut .
This is one of the potent drugs of
Indian system of medicine used for various
conditions, it contains a highly irritant oil of
Phenolic nature in the pulp of the fruit.
16. This drug is supposed to have powerful
action on gastro-intestinal tract. It stimulates the
digestive mechanism.
According to ayurveda involvement of
gastro-intestinal tract is primary in the aetiology of
amavata., hence this drug was given a trial to assess
its role in the treatment of the same.

17. Paedaria foetida Linn. (prasarini)
It is a creeper of Rubiacae family having
an special pungent odour. The root is quite thick
which is used for medicinal purpose.
Extensive experimental and clinical
studies have been done on this drug the result have
been highly encouraging. Oil processed with this drug
has also been recommended for Rheumatic diseases.

18. Ricinus communis Linn. (Erenda)
Eranda oil by virtue of its different pharmacological property
overcomes the pathology of amavata like ushna virya& vata
pacifying property helps in improving pain and inflammation.
Ushna property also acts as deepana and potentiates agni thus
checking ama formation.
Castor oil is very effective natural anti,inflammatory.
High vitamin E content contributes significantly to the
anti,Inflammatory properties of castor oil. The natural vitamin E
present in castor oil has a number of tocopherol specific
moisturizing, anti,inflammatory &anti,oxidant property. Also
vitamin E contributes to improve microcirculation and UV
protection.
