5. Introduction
• It belongs to subfamily Culicinae .
• There are 2750 species under this large
subfamily.
• The most important genera are Aedes, Culex,
Mansonia ,Hemagogus , Sabethes ,and
Psorophora.
6. Culex
• Distribution : It is found world wide , but are absent
from extreme Northern parts of temperate zones.
• Eggs: They are usually brown , long cylindrical and are
laid upright in water surface and placed together to form
Eggs raft which comprises of 30 Eggs . The eggs are
held together not by any glue but by surface tension of
the water.
8. • Larvae : The larval siphon is
often long and narrow , but
may be short and fat. There is
always more than one pair of
subventral tufts of hair on the
siphon none of which are near
the base .These hair tufts may
consist of very few short and
simple hairs, which can be
missed unless larvae are
examined under microscope.
9. Pupae: The length of
respiratory trumpets is
variable but are generally
more longer more
cylindrical and have
narrower opening than in
Anophleles. Abdominal
segments 2-7 lack pegs like
spine , although have
numerous setae.
10. Adult: The thorax, legs and
wings vein are covered with
dull brown or balckish scale .
The tip of female abdomen is
blunt not pointed . Claws on all
tarsi are simple and those on
hind tarsi are small.
Examination under
microscope Showa all tarsi
have a pair of small fleshy
pulvilli.

12. Public Health Importance
• The important species Culex quinquefasciatus is a
vector for Wuchereria bancrofti ( filariasis ) breeds in
water polluted with organic debris such as rotting
vegetation , household refuse , excreta . Larva of the sp.
found in blocked drains and ditches , soak ways pits , and
septic tanks .
• It is a mosquito associated with urbanisation esp. town
with poor and inadequate drainage and sanition.
13. Public Health Importance
• Culex tritaeniorhynchus is a vector for Japanese encephalitis
and breeds in rice fields and grassy pools. In south Asia larvae are
common in fish ponds which have had manure added to them
• Culex quinquefasciatus and other culex sp. bite human and
other host at night . Some sp of C quinquefasciatus commonly rest
indoors both before and after feeding , but also shelter in outdoor
resting places.
• Range of flight of Culex is about 100Km.
