4. Romans 15:1, Help One Another
• NAU Romans 15:1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the
weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.
• The context is; NAU Romans 14:23 But he who doubts is condemned if
he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from
faith is sin.
• NAU 1 Thessalonians 5:11Therefore encourage one another, and
build up one another, just as you also are doing.… 14 And we urge
you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help
the weak, be patient with all men.
• We should be be encouraging.
• NAU Hebrews 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long
as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the
deceitfulness of sin.
• NAU Isaiah 35:3 Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the
feeble. 4 Say to those with anxious heart, "Take courage, fear not.
Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God
will come, But He will save you."
5. Romans 15:1, “bear the weaknesses”
• NAU Romans 15:1 …strong ought to bear
[bastazo] the weaknesses [adunatos] of those
without strength…
• <941> βαστάζειν bastazo
• Meaning: to take up, carry…
• <102> ἀδυνάτων adunatos
• Meaning: unable, powerless…
• Usage: impossible(6), no strength(1), things
that are impossible(1), could not do(1),

those without strength…
• NAU Galatians 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is
caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual,
restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness;
each one looking to yourself, so that you too
will not be tempted.
7. Gal 6:2, Carry Who's Burdens
• Gal 6:2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this
way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
• Gal 6:5 for each one should carry his own
load.
• Is this a contradiction in the Bible?
7
8. Gal 6:5, Carry His Own Load
• Bible Knowledge Commentary explains; “The
Christian does in fact test himself by carrying his
own load. This does not contradict verse 2 because
the reference there is to heavy, crushing, loads
(bare) - more than a man could carry without help.
In this verse a different Greek word (phortion) is
used to designate the pack usually carried by a
marching soldier. It is the "burden" Jesus assigns to
His followers (cf. Mt 11:30). There are certain
Christian responsibilities or burdens each believer
must bear which cannot be shared with others.
Jesus assured His disciples that such burdens were
light.”

10. Gal 6:5, Carry His Own Load
• Gal 6:5 for each one should carry his own load.

10
11. Gal 6:5, Carry His Own Load
• 2 Th 3:7-10…We were not idle when we were
with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone's food
without paying for it. On the contrary, we
worked night and day, laboring and toiling so
that we would not be a burden to any of you.
9 We did this, not because we do not have the
right to such help, but in order to make
ourselves a model for you to follow. 10 For
even when we were with you, we gave you
this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not
eat."
11
12. Romans 15:2-4, Please, Edify, Instruct And
Encourage Each Other
• NAU Romans 15:2 Each of us is to please his
neighbor for his good, to his edification. 3 For
even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is
written, "THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO
REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME." 4 For
whatever was written in earlier times was
written for our instruction, so that through
perseverance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope.
13. Romans 15:4, OT Was Written For Our Learning,
Instruction, Encouragement, And Hope
• NAU Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in
earlier times was written for our instruction, so
that through perseverance and the
encouragement of the Scriptures we might have
hope.
• Thomas Carlyle once said, “He who has no hope of
eternity has no purpose in time.”
• NAU 1 Thessalonians 4:13 But we do not want you
to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are
asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest
who have no hope.
14. NKJ Romans 15:5
“God of patience and comfort”
• NKJ Romans 15:5 Now may the God of patience
and comfort [paraklesis]…
• NAU 2 Corinthians 1:2 Grace to you and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so
that we will be able to comfort those who are in
any affliction with the comfort with which we
ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For just as
15. 2 Corinthians 1:2, “God of all comfort”
• the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our
comfort is abundant through Christ. 6 But if we are
afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are
comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the
patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also
suffer; 7 and our hope for you is firmly grounded,
knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also
you are sharers of our comfort. 8 For we do not want you
to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to
us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond
our strength, so that we despaired even of life;
16. KJV John 14:16, “another
Comforter"
• KJV John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall

cause with one, an intercessor…

17. Romans 15:4, Written For Our Learning
• NAU Romans 15:4 [OT] was written for our instruction…
• NAU 1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to
them as an example, and they were written for our
instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have
come.
• J. Vernon McGee, “In my opinion, the greatest sin in the
church of Jesus Christ in this generation is ignorance of
the Word of God. Many times I have heard a church
officer say, "Well I don't know much about the Bible,
but..." and then he gives his opinion, which often
actually contradicts the Word of God! Why doesn't he
know much about the Bible? These things were written
aforetime for our learning. God wants you to know His
Word.”
18. Romans 15:4, Hermeneutics
• The Bible is the revelation of God to humans, in historical
narrative form. It is the story of God creating, sustaining,
loving, chastising, and relating to humans from day one. As
historical narrative it must be read with a consistent, and
proper, hermeneutic; Normal, Literal, Grammatical,
Historical, and Contextual. We must give the Bible at least as
much respect as we do a newspaper. We would never pick up
a newspaper and read a historical narrative on page 1, say
concerning a bus wreck, and automatically assume that the
drunk driver who ran the red light, or the 10 people that
were injured, somehow includes us. Or that the story
concerns us, and our personal needs.
• Yes, the Bible is supernatural and 18
19. Romans 15:4, Hermeneutics
• it does impact our life, as stated in; Hebrews 4:12 “For the word
of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged
sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of
both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and
intentions of the heart.”
• But we must read it as God intended it to be read, historical
narrative for most of it. Through these stories we can learn
everything we need about God, the Devil, and humans. While we
remember we are reading someone else’s mail, their story,
published for our benefit.
• NAU Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was
written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the
encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

20. Romans 15:7, Therefore
• NAU Romans 15:7 Therefore, accept
[proslambano] [receive, accept, welcome] one another,
just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of
God.
• NAS Romans 14:1 Now accept [proslambano] the
one who is weak in faith, but not for the
purpose of passing judgment on his opinions.
• Paul’s only two uses of this word in Romans.
• How did Christ receive/accept you?
21. Romans 15:9
God’s Plan For The Gentiles
• NAU Romans 15:9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His
mercy; as it is written, "THEREFORE I WILL GIVE PRAISE TO
YOU AMONG THE GENTILES, AND I WILL SING TO YOUR
NAME." 10 Again he says, "REJOICE, O GENTILES, WITH HIS
PEOPLE." 11 And again, "PRAISE THE LORD ALL YOU
GENTILES, AND LET ALL THE PEOPLES PRAISE HIM." 12 Again
Isaiah says, "THERE SHALL COME THE ROOT OF JESSE [Christ],
AND HE WHO ARISES TO RULE OVER THE GENTILES, IN HIM
SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE.”
• Do you think that God revealed a plan for the Gentiles in the
Old Testament?
• Paul quotes from all 3 OT divisions, (Law, Profits, Writings)
22. Romans 15:9, Glorify God
• NAU Romans 15:9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God
for His mercy; as it is written, "THEREFORE I WILL GIVE
PRAISE TO YOU AMONG THE GENTILES, AND I WILL
SING TO YOUR NAME.”
• Paul is quoting the OT and all are from the Greek
Septuagint, think God has a plan for the Gentiles?
• 1 Corinthians 6:20 For you have been bought with a
price: therefore glorify God in your body.
• “You are one of a kind- designed to glorify God as only
you can.” Unknown
24. Romans 15:13, GotQuestions.org
Depressed, Sadness And Depression
• Question: "How can I experience joy in my Christian life?"
Answer: “Periods of sadness and depression can enter the life of even the
most devout Christian. We see many examples of this in the Bible. Job
wished he had never been born (Job 3:11). David prayed to be taken away
to a place where he would not have to deal with reality (Psalm 55:6-8).
Elijah, even after defeating 450 prophets of Baal with fire called down from
heaven (1 Kings 18:16-46), fled into the desert and asked God to take his life
(1 Kings 19:3-5). So how can we overcome these periods of joylessness?
We can see how these same people overcame their bouts of depression.
Job said that, if we pray and remember our blessings, God will restore us to
joy and righteousness (Job 33:26). David wrote that the study of God's
Word can bring us joy (Psalm 19:8). David also realized that he needed to
praise God even in the midst of despair (Psalm 42:5). In Elijah's case, God let
him rest for a time and then sent a man, Elisha, to help him (1 Kings 19:19-
21). We also need friends that we can share our hurts and pains with
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). It may be helpful to share our feelings with a fellow
Christian. We may be surprised to find that he or she has struggled with
some of the same
25. Romans 15:13, GotQuestions.org
Depressed, Sadness And Depression
• things that we are going through. Most importantly, it is certain that dwelling on
ourselves, our problems, our hurts, and especially our pasts will never produce
true spiritual joy. Joy is not found in materialism, it is not found in
psychotherapy, and it most certainly is not found in obsession with ourselves. It
is found in Christ. We who belong to the Lord “glory in Christ Jesus, and put no
confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). To know Christ is to come to have a
true sense of ourselves, and true spiritual insight, making it impossible to glory in
ourselves, in our wisdom, strength, riches, or goodness, but in Christ—in His
wisdom and strength, in His riches and goodness, and in His person only. If we
remain in Him, immerse ourselves in His Word, and seek to know Him more
intimately, our “joy will be full” (John 15:1-11).
Finally, remember that it is only through God's Holy Spirit that we can find true
joy (Psalm 51:11-12; Galatians 5:22; 1 Thessalonians 1:6). We can do nothing
apart from the power of God (2 Corinthians12:10, 13:4). Indeed, the harder we
try to be joyful through our own efforts, the more miserable we can become.
Rest in the Lord's arms (Matthew 11:28-30) and seek His face through prayer and
Scripture. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in
Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”
(Romans 15:13).”
26. Romans 15:15, Remind Us
• NAU Romans 15:15 But I have written very boldly to you on
some points so as to remind you again, because of the
grace that was given me from God,
• NAU 2 Timothy 2:14 Remind them of these things, and

remind you of these things, even though you already
know them, and have been established in the truth which
is present with you.

29. Romans 15:16, Sanctification
• 1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your
sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual
immorality; 4 that each of you know how to possess his own
vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like
the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 and that no man
transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the
Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you
before and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us
for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. 8 So, he who
rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His
Holy Spirit to you. 9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you
have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves
are taught by God to love one another;
• Romans 6:19-23, 2 Thessalonians 2:13,

that?! And it seems to me that this should be our article of faith
as Christians or better yet, OUR CODE OF ACTION IN LIFE! We

47. Romans 15:16
Sanctification, progressive or finished?
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY Acts 26:18 Romans 15:16 1 Corinthians 1 Galatians 3:3
• Dear Compass,
• I am confused about "sanctification." (A well-known Bible teacher) is teaching that we might need sanctifying again in heaven if we don’t have enough good works here on earth and that we
could be refused entrance into the Marriage Supper of the Lamb because we were naked/didn't have wedding clothes (gained from our good works on earth) and instead be cast into "outer
darkness" for 1000 years as sort of punishment and to sanctify us for not having enough righteous acts on earth. What do you think?
•
ANSWER:
• That's ridiculous. The Bible teaches unequivocally that Believers are sanctified for eternity when they are “born again” (John 3:1-8). A “born again” Believer is complete because of what Jesus did
on the cross, not because of anything we do while we are on this earth. We cannot add anything to what Jesus has already done 2000 years ago.
• and in Him you have been made complete . . . —Colossians 2:10A person has to be perfectly and permanently cleansed before the Holy Spirit can permanently indwell them. This happens when
we are “born again” by the Spirit, made possible because Jesus paid for our sins. That's why no one in the Old Testament could be born again - have the Holy Spirit permanently live in them -
because Jesus had yet to die for their sins. It’s also why the Old Testament Believers couldn't go to heaven until AFTER the cross - Jesus' shed blood on the cross paid for their sins and therefore
sanctified them and they were able to go to heaven only after the resurrection (Luke 16:19-31; Ephesians 4:9; Matthew 27:51-53).
• All of our sins - past, present and FUTURE - were nailed to that cross.
• And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the
certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. —Colossians 2:13-14The Bible promises that the
Holy Spirit will never leave us. His permanent indwelling is not based on what we do or don't do, but rather what Jesus did on the cross, confirming that sanctification is permanent/forever.
• I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you, —Hebrews 13:5And we, as created beings, can never leave Him.
• For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, NOR ANY OTHER CREATED THING, shall be
able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:38-39 (CAPS added for emphasis) Sanctification is discussed at length in the Bible. It's interesting that a
Believer can be both a full-blown sinner and totally sanctified at the same time.
• . . . that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me. —Acts 26:18 (“sanctified” is past tense.). . . that my offering of the Gentiles
might become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.—Romans 15:16 (“sanctified” is past tense.)
• . . . those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus . . . —1 Corinthians 1:2 (“sanctified” is past tense.)
• By this will [God's] we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. —Hebrews 10:10 (“sanctified” is past tense.)
• For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. —Hebrews 10:14 (“sanctified” is present tense.)
• Therefore, Believers, cleansed by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, are already as sanctified as they’ll ever be on this earth. For God to permanently live in us, we have to be 100% sanctified forever.
Yet at the same time Believers are dirty rotten sinners, living with the sin nature, until death or The Rapture.
• That means we also don't believe in "progressive sanctification," whereby someone is getting more sanctified due to their "works" on the earth. We believe we are incapable of doing anything
worthwhile on our own, but can do all things through Him (Philippians 4:13).
• Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?—Galatians 3:3Believers can mature in their knowledge of Him and what He desires in them. And
Believers can sin and grieve the Holy Spirit.
• Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.—Ephesians 4:30But Believers cannot do good works and have them count for squat because it is the
Holy Spirit Who does the good, not the Believer. In summary, there is nothing you can do, or not do, to make yourself more or less sanctified, more or less acceptable to God, or more or less close
to God - in this life or the next.

49. Romans 15:30, HELP ME, HELP ME!
by Steve Shepherd
• Romans 15:30-15:33, “We all need help in life, even the best of us. God allows us all to get to that point in life even
though we’d like to be as independent as possible.
• The soldier’s first article of faith is summed up in an 1865 letter from Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman to U.S. Grant: “I
knew wherever I was that you thought of me, and if I got in a tight place you would come–if alive.”
• If you were alive you would come and help me. How great is that?! And it seems to me that this should be our article of
faith as Christians or better yet, OUR CODE OF ACTION IN LIFE! We come to the aid of one another if at all possible!
• Galatians 6:9-10 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give
up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of
believers.”
• People need people. The mother said: Laurie was about three when one night she wanted me to help her get undressed.
I was downstairs and she was upstairs, and … well. “You know how to undress yourself,” I told her. “Yes,” she explained,
‘but sometimes people need people anyway, even if they do know how to do things by themselves.”
• Yes, even though we know how to do many things for ourselves, we still need help occasionally from others.
• Some years ago I bought an old used riding mower from a man who was probably 85 years old at that time but he kept
that mower spotless. He would even wipe the engine clean after mowing and I don’t know of anyone who does that. I
figured it had to be a good mower. The only problem was that he said you had to run the mower with the choke pulled
out, otherwise, it just wouldn’t run. He didn’t know why and I didn’t know why but I took him at his word and ran the
mower just like he said.
• Well, finally after several years that mower started to give me some trouble. It died on me and wouldn’t start. I had to
replace a fuel filter that was apparently clogged with dirt. I thought I had it cured and ran it for some time. Well, it finally
quit on me again and once again, I replaced the fuel filter because it had particles of rubber than came out of the gas
tank. Still, I couldn’t get it started so one day I asked one of our men if he could look at it. I know a few things about
gasoline engines and mowers, but I figured he knew a lot more about them. AND HE DOES.
• When he came to house, the mower started. But he said that I shouldn’t have to run that mower with that choke pulled

Do you suppose that if Jesus had $100,000 and a 401k, and knowing that there are kids starving in China, and Africa, He would be concerned with;
What kind of car should I buy? Or how many bathrooms should I get in my new house?
