Essay on Alan Bennett Talking Heads
Alan Bennett Talking Heads
In Bennett's monologues the main character faces an important decision which will affect the course
of their lives. I will go on and explain in this essay, the play writer's use of literary techniques –
including setting, theme and characterisation– which may make the decision seem correct or not.
Talking Heads was originally produced for BBC television but has recently been used as a collection
of short stories. Each of the characters portrayed, is played by an actress that has been previously
associated with Alan Bennett e.g.:Thora Hird who plays Doris worked on a BBC Radio 4
programme – Deadringers .It is safe to say that Alan Bennett tailored some of the material, to suit
the actors, own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bennett reflects this very well by transferring this British habit to his characters. All of them are
dead against a change in their lifestyle.
This is excellently demonstrated in 'A Cream Cracker'– Doris wants to stay in her house, but the
council recommends she moves to a nursing home , but she refuses on the grounds of hygiene–
clearly this shows that she is against a change of setting and a change of life and this is cleverly
portrayed throughout the plays.
Is their setting a safe haven or a prison? Looked at from different angles, we all would have different
views. With Graham, his home and mainly his bedroom is a sanctuary for him, some where he can
escape prejudice and critics, but on reflection what they really are – is a hiding place , a place for
Graham to hide away and wallow in self pity. But for Irene she feels her home is a prison. She has
no freedom or liberty, no way to express herself. The only way she achieves this is by writing letters
which may anger or offend other members in the community. But as she enters an actual prison she
feels more freedom than when she was actually a free woman, that may seem strange to you and I,
but for some people, this can be reality and a break from a life they do not enjoy. When dealing with
Doris, it is or can be a confusing situation, from different viewpoints it

How Is Miss Ruddock's Terrible Loneliness Conveyed In Alan Bennett's
A Lady Of Letters?
Miss Irene Ruddock is an ordinary middle–aged woman who lives on her own. She was close to her
mother who had recently passed away. Miss
Ruddock has no real friends and finds it difficult to fill her time so she is often sitting in her chair,
looking out of her window and noting what is going on in other people's lives. She has no social life
and she only leaves the house when she has to.
Alan Bennett shows Miss Ruddock's loneliness through her obsession of writing letters. She uses
these letters as a way of communicating with the world outside her home. In the drama, before
going to prison, we do not hear Miss Ruddock have a meaningful ... Show more content on

This is a computer generated letter sent to all customers after a certain amount of time, and Miss
Ruddock replies to by saying she 'thought it very considerate of them for drawing this to my
attention and in the event of me noticing any deterioration I would...get in touch with them'. This is
another example of loneliness as it shows her desperation to communicate with the outside world
and will use any excuses to do so.
Miss Ruddock is lonely because she leads a very lacklustre life. Other than writing inappropriate
letters to anyone she see's fit, she spends a lot of her time sitting in her chair by the window, often
looking over the actions of her neighbour's and casting judgement over their lifestyles. An example
of this is when she says 'Well, you've got a car, you've got a transistor, it's about time you invested in
some curtains'. At the beginning of the monologue we find out that Miss
Ruddock attended the funeral of somebody who, until their obituary was posted in the local
newspaper, she had called the wrong name. she feels that they are similar because 'She lost her
mother around the same time I lost mine, she had a niece in Australia and I have one cousin in
Canada, then she went in for gas–fired central heating just a few weeks before I did'. This shows that
she is lonely because she is so desperate to have something to do in her leisure time that she

My Experience : My Personal Experience In High School
My junior year was the third and final year that I was enrolled in the business academy at my high
school. Being in the business academy was just a sophisticated way of saying that I was taking an
online business course through a local community college. It also meant that I was automatically a
part of a career and technical student organization called Business Professionals of America. For the
three previous years, I had participated in the Regional BPA Competition, however, I fell short one
place of qualifying for the State Competition each year. By the time the winter of my junior year
came around, I became determined to finally qualify for State. Placing first or second at State would
enable me to attend Nationals which was held in Orlando. Nevertheless, my ultimate goal was to
compete at the State level. I studied and practiced more than I ever had in the past. I rummaged
through an abundance of resources and asked my business teacher a plethora of questions to ensure
that I understood the material well. When the time had come in February, I worked on my contest
diligently and I revised it multiple times before submitting it. I was sanguine about my final product,
but I also didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case the outcome was not what I was wishing
for.
On a chilly February morning, the business academy students, including myself, boarded a school
bus headed for Greenville High School for the Regional BPAAwards Ceremony. Sitting in the very
back row of the auditorium, I waited anxiously for my contest to be announced. After what felt like
a lifetime, I spotted my name projected onto the big screen which indicated that I had made it into
the top five, and it was time for me to report to the stage. As the bright warm lights hit my face, I
hoped that the crowd wouldn't be able to see my shaking knees. Starting with sixth place, the
announcer called out what place each contestant came in. Finally it was down to second and first
place and my name had not yet been called. I was overwhelmed with relief knowing that no matter
what place I came in at that point, I had qualified for State. I ended up placing first and my teacher
congratulated me with a candy bar as I went back to

In Vincent O’Sullivan’S Finding The Pattern, Solving The
In Vincent O'Sullivan's Finding the Pattern, Solving the Problem: Katherine Mansfield The New
Zealand European, it is noted that Katherine Mansfield 'was an enthusiast for the cinema', that 'she
acted in several movies' and that 'her letters frequently took up such images as the months that
"stream by like a movie picture"'(18). Furthermore, her short story At the Bay begins with the line
'Very early morning'(Mansfield 5), that when interpreted from a literary standpoint, is more suited to
a screenplay direction than the opening of a narrative. From studying At the Bay, alongside The
Garden Party and Miss Brill, it is evident that her love of cinema influences her own writing, to the
point where techniques that are prominently filmic, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The 'big bush–covered hills'(Mansfield 1) and 'sandy road with shallow puddles(2) of the opening
are made evident that they're not situated by the 'weed–hung rocks' and 'small rock pools'(20) of a
later section, yet the consistency of the style in which each area is described, the narrative voice
wandering from components of the setting, such as the 'tide' to the 'sunlight' (20) to the 'green
binds...in the bungalows'(21) and the 'pawa shells'(21), not unlike a montage, unite the set of
surroundings by replicating the manner in which they are portrayed.
This parallels Citizen Kane's 'News of the World' sequence, a montage that uses accurate renditions
of a series of news segments, where newspapers and footage are both crafted to look as authentic
and possible, to create a realistic depiction of media coverage that encompasses the globe through
the different languages printed on certain newspapers. This of course brings different places together
to add to the legibility of the scene and thus its overall realism. Much like Mansfield, Welles uses
the idea of consistency and replication in his montage as a way of uniting it to the real world.
Yet this montage sequence in Citizen Kane fulfills another purpose. This scene takes place directly
after Kane's death, a sombre, moving moment. By directly contrasting that moment with a

The House on Mango Street
The short story by Sandra Cisneros revolves truly around the tittle "The House on Mango Street"
and how her family moved from places to places to get there. The recollection of the street names
her family lived on and how every time they moved "there'd be one more of us" added to the authors
focus of emphasizing how important the word "home" meant to her throughout the story. The family
of six included Mama, Papa, brothers Carlos and Kiki, and sister Nenny. According to the author's
memory, she had lived on Loomis, Keeler and Paulina. "We don't have to pay rent to anybody, or
share the yard with the people, downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn't
a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom." The authors ... Show more content on

The author had high expectation for this house, but fails to realize that her family was constantly
moving from one poor district of Chicago to another. The addition of a family member every time
they moved didn't help their economic status either due to the increase in budget when you have one
more child to take care of. The major themes of the short story were home, family, poverty and self–
identity. Cisneros need for a home is much related to her economic situation, her dreams and
frustrations towards her family. Someone to blame for this would be Mama and Papa that keep
forming this image of the perfect house in the authors mind. "This was the house Papa talked about
when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us
before we went to bed." The severity of her disappointment and the shame is demonstrated when she
describes the house on Mango Street. "Where do you live? she asked. There, I said pointing up to
the third floor. You live there? There... I lived there. I nodded." The exchange of question and
answer between the nun and the author created a tome of tension to the dialogue. The italicizing of
text tied into the theme of home and the verbal beating tolerated by the author. The short story ends
with "I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it...For the
time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa, But I know how those things go." This statement by

A Sense of Tragedy and Humour in alan Bennett's Talking Heads Monologues
Alan Bennett uses a variety of techniques to convey a sense of both tragedy and humour in his
'Talking Heads' monologues. I will be looking specifically at 'Bed Among The Lentils' and 'Cream
Cracker Under The Settee.' Alan Bennett achieves both of these effects by use of several clever
choices regarding the casting as well as sound and visual effects.
There are two very different types of humour in 'Bed Among The Lentils' and 'Cream Cracker Under
The Settee'. BATL uses a lot of sarcastic, bitter humour whereas CCUTS uses some wry, discreet
humour and at times Doris, the elderly woman in CCUTS, seems to be mocking herself ... Show

Susan is a very sarcastic and bitter person. This may be due to her marriage with Geoffrey as this is
a very boring situation for her. Not only this, Geoffrey exploits her alcoholism to make people think
he is a caring husband willing to stand by his wife every step of the way.
'He grips my hand in public, nay brandishes it.'
This line implies that Susan feels trapped in her marriage and is unable to stop Geoffrey taking
control and making her decisions for her.
Doris has also had a very unhappy life with several tragic incidents, most notably, the loss of her
baby at a very young age.
'I wanted him called John. The midwife said he wasn't fit to be called anything'
'All them years ago when we were first married and I was having the baby.'
These lines show that Doris lives in the past a lot and this probably contributes to her sadness as she
is unable to move on from the loss of her baby and later, the loss of her husband.
Doris is also extremely reliant on Zulema to carry out jobs in and around the house for her. this
frustrates Doris as she would rather be doing this herself to ensure that they are done properly.
'Zulema doesn't dust. She half dusts.'
This shows that Doris is unsatisfied with Zulema and is rather fussy when it comes to cleanliness.
Susan is constantly

The History Boys by Alan Bennett
Can someone be born evil or is the ability to be immoral something that's acquired through the
environment? Various techniques were used by Alan Bennett in the History Boys to convey how
Hector wasn't purely immoral because he let his sexual desires lead to the fondling of his student's
genitals, but because he was a dedicated educator who would stop at no means including
disconnection with the traditional form of teaching in order to per–quire his students futures through
alternative education. The most salient feature is the use of diverse characters in order to evoke how
they all have dreams of a more secure future through selective college acceptance even though they
come from different religions, sexual orientations, and even wealth levels. The students might have
been different, but that one goal of securing a brighter future lead to them being physically groped
by their teacher, Hector. The physical groping of an underage minor by an adult educator seems
immoral and is unjustifiable especially considering that many of the boys put up with the groping in
order for Hector to continue teaching them so they might stand a possibility of passing the entrance
exams. The groping is an inexcusable act Hector exhibits, but the groping is only a little part of his
character as he doesn't teach the boys in the standard mode of learning through lectures and note
taking "God doesn't do notes, either. Did Jesus Christ say, "Can I be excused from the Crucifixion?"
No!", and

Tiny Homes Advantages And Disadvantages
A Tiny Home is a house which is less than 300–400 square feet in size. Most of the Tiny Homes are
only 200 square feet and they serve the purpose of providing comfort and safety quite well. This is
the planning stage, when you must think of every significant thing or you might spend massive
amounts of time rethinking your decisions.
The idea is to think tiny. When you begin, you must understand what you need to carry out and to do
that, you must know why Tiny Homes are so good for you. It helps you to plan your Tiny Home and
make a list of things you want to do in it and the kind of items that are indispensable to your
lifestyle.
The main things that you should think about are the advantages, the utility aspect, expenses, and
having your own solar panel grid for power for your house. The advantages are self–explanatory.
The utility factor includes simplicity, expense and minimalistic living. The solar power grid will
need some figuring out from your side. You can read about how to make calculations in the coming
chapters. Using solar power will cut costs and give you the mobility you need.
Advantages of a Tiny Home
● First, there is no wastage of space. Everything is within reach.
● Next, you do not spend much, either on the building or for maintaining the Tiny Home.
● When you begin to think small, your cost comes down.
● The Tiny Homes are environmentally friendly since you will naturally produce less waste.
● Life becomes simpler. o You cannot hang on to your shoe

The rare Daintree Rainforest is one of the forest that has been demolishing slowly because of
logging. With this ecosystem fragmentation is occurring ("All about carbon dioxide"). Ecosystem
fragmentation is where the forest is separated into smaller pieces over time because of human
activity ("The Daintree Rainforest Australia"). With this happening, animals habitats are becoming
even smaller ("All about carbon dioxide"). With more habitat space becoming less it is causing more
animals to become threatened and an endangered species ("Deforestation"). Smaller amount of
habitat is also affecting the animals migration patterns, their ability to collect food, and provides less
shelter ("All about carbon dioxide"). This fragmentation also makes it a struggle for animals to
move from one part of the rainforest to another and it also affects the limit it has on the animals
breeding population. The ecosystem fragmentation is making them become more vulnerable to
extinction ("Population in Daintree"). Logging is cutting down one and one–half acres of trees each

Comparing Home in Richard Ford's I Must Be Going and Scott Sander's Homeplace
Most people define home as a comfortable setting which provides love and warmth. In Scott
Sanders "Homeplace" and Richard Ford's "I Must Be Going" the concept of home is defined in two
different ways. Sanders believes that by moving from place to place, the meaning of home has been
diminished. Sanders believes that America's culture "nudges everyone into motion" (Sanders 103)
and that his "longing to become an inhabitant rather than a drifter" (103) is what sets him apart from
everyone else. Ford prefers to stay on the move. His argument is life's too short to settle in one
place. He believes home is where you make it, but permanence is not a ... Show more content on

Sanders has a different opinion of moving just to see other places. Sanders believes that in order to
know a place one must "root" themselves into it. Sanders proposes that "if you are not yourself
placed, then you wander the world like a sightseer, a collector of sensations, with no gauge for
measuring what you see" (103). Ford has a different feeling. He believes that seeing all of these
places creates memory, and imagination of these other places just provides an illusion of what is
really going on in the world. He says, "Memory always needs replenishing, and anyway you
misunderstand imagination and how it thrives in us by extending partial knowledge to complete any
illusion of reality" (Ford 110). Sanders would disagree that home is not a place. He starts out his
essay with a story of a family whose house is destroyed by a tornado three times. Each time they
rebuild in the same spot. Sanders admires this family for their commitment to their home. Sanders
believes length of time in an area has a definite effect on someone's meaning for that place. Sanders
is encouraged by the words of Gary Snyder in The Practice of the Wild: "You know, I think if people
stay somewhere long enough, the spirits will begin to speak to them" (104). Ford does not believe in
commitment to a place. He quotes Ralph Emerson saying, "We live amid surfaces, and the true art of
life is to skate well on them" (Ford

I Liked More Was The One From Gretel Ehrlich
The essay I liked more was the one from Gretel Ehrlich I liked this essay because when she was
telling her story she was focusing on only one place. This essay was very different than Annie
Dillard I say this because when Annie was talking she didn't focus on only one place in her essay
she was focusing on many different places. I personally think that the essay from Gretel Ehrich was
the best. Why I think is the best is because when I was reading it I felt like I can picture what she
was talking about in my head. As I was readying this essay I felt like I can place myself in the place
she was describing for example when she was taking about being at the farm and other things she
made reference too. This essay was just really calm, essay to fallow, it was clear, and as I as
readying it I felt like I was connected to it. this is why I liked this essay more than the one from
Annie Dillard when I was readying the essay from Annie I just could focus on what she was talking
about because she would take her story to multiple places. She would be talking about one thing and
then she would all the sudden change it and this is what I didn't like about her essay because it was
just really hard to fallow with all the multiple places she was referring too. Another thing I think like
about it I that when it was telling her story she would repeat herself. This is what made it hard for
me to understand, it's just crazy and goes on and on. This is why I choose the essay from Gretel.

Jfk Light Blue Inaugural Speech Analysis
A primer, or undercoat, is a base layer of paint that goes on a wall before the actual color of paint. A
wall painted dark red will need several layers of primer in order to be painted a light blue. Think of
that dark red wall as a speech, or piece of writing. Those first pages will need renovation after
renovation to get to the final product; the light blue wall. Before John F. Kennedy made his light
blue inaugural speech using pathos, antithesis, repetition and parallelism, it was a dark red version
by Galbraith and Stevenson that included small amounts of rhetorical devices. After multiple

Essay on Analysis of Comparable Worth and the Common Good
The Federal Government has been struggling for almost four decades now to close the gap between
the wages of men and women. In the 1960's, women were paid approximately 60 cents for every
dollar men received for their work. Although progress has been made since Congress passed the
Equal Pay Act in 1963, equality has not yet been achieved. Today, thirty–six years later, women still
earn only seventy–six percent of the wages of men.
Early studies found convincing evidence that women were being construed as inferior when it came
to their work. Jobs that were dominated by women were paid less than male–dominated jobs, not
because they were intrinsically worth less, but because they were dominated by women (Treiman &
Hartmann, 1981:93; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jobs are judged similar, thus comparable, based on composite ratings of requirements such as skill,
effort, responsibility, or other factors valued by an organization. All in all, comparable worth is
necessary because discriminatory pay practices of the past were not fully addressed by equal
employment opportunity legislation, and thus effects have been perpetuated by conventional pay
administration practices (Taylor, 1989). Comparable worth rests on the theory that pay differentials
are caused by sex discrimination. It proposes that sexual segregation in jobs has unjustly depressed
women workers' wages. According to Wittig (1989), we may look at how this segregation has
contributed to the wage gap from two viewpoints. Firstly, a significant portion of the sex pay gap
has undoubtedly been caused by job placement discrimination, which has placed women into less
skilled, less demanding jobs. Secondly, the gap may be caused by "female" jobs being assigned
lower pay, even when the jobs require skill equal to that in "male" jobs. There are several ways that
this discrimination may be sustained: 1) job segregation related to prejudice by employers,
consumers, and co–workers; 2) devaluation of jobs performed primarily by women and minority
men; and 3) women and minority men's job choices, assertiveness about pay, and other group
tendencies (Wittig, 1989). So, how does one go about achieving comparable worth in their
organization, you may bee wondering? First, a method must be

The Bennett Place Farmhouse And Discovered The History
American History never seemed interesting to me, especially when I was asked to choose an
informative historic sighting. Many sites did not call my attention nor appeared to suit my interest,
that is until I researched the The Bennett Place Farmhouse and discovered the history that hides
behind this simple farmhouse. Fascinated by my trip, my perspective opened up to a variety of
views and ideas about the battles and surrenders that resulted from the Civil War. The history of the
site, the valuables and sighting, and my reflection towards the Bennett Place Historic Site all
contributed to my understanding of the many surrenders that occurred during the great Civil War .

Johnston disobeyed orders and met Sherman again at the Bennett farm on April 26 which resulted in
another meeting. On the final meeting, the Confederate forces became completely disbanded. The

soldier. Of all the meetings and compromises between General Joseph E. Johnston and General
William T. Sherman, each contributed to largest surrender of Confederate soldiers that terminated
the American Civil War, on April 26, 1865.
The history hidden behind the Bennett Place Historic site reveals itself once you set foot on the

visual representation of General Joseph E. Johnston and General William T. Sherman portrayed
beside the big bolded words that marked "Bennett Place Visitor Center Entrance". My family and I
walked in and noticed the tour began with souvenirs from a small store. One side of the store having
souvenirs of the Union and the other side having souvenirs of the Confederates. Books, american
flags, confederate and unions hats, and shirts were all displayed in a arciach way. As if the store
wanted us to not only see history but feel the history and feel as if everyone were in that time era. As
we walked along there was a slightly dark room, this is where the fun began. What first

Analyzing Alan Bennett 's ' The History Boys ' And '...
In this essay I will be analysing how Alan Bennett's 'The History Boys' and 'Educating Rita' by
Willy Russell investigate the notion that 'all knowledge is precious whether or not it serves the
slightest human use' along with how they explore the purpose of education.
Educating Rita is about the journey of Rita, a twenty–six year old working class woman from
Liverpool, entering the world of formal education through an Open University course or as she
refers to it as a 'degree for dishwashers'. Rita's peers disapprove of formal education. Despite this,
she has a desire to learn 'everything' even though this could lead to rejection from her family and
community. She is simply learning for the pleasure of education and with the hope that this
education will allow her to enter a wider world.
The History boys is a journey of a group of Northern working and middle class grammar school
boys, who are aspiring to get into – Oxbridge on scholarships, with the aid of two contrasting
teachers, one who believes that education is solely for the purpose of grades and another who
teaches 'gobbets of information' for the purpose of personal gain.
Educating Rita begins with the female protagonist Rita having difficulty entering her professor
Frank's office, 'I'm comin' in, aren't I? It's that stupid bleedin' handle on the door. You wanna get it
fixed!' she exclaims. This is a metaphor for the barrier between her current status as a poorly
educated working class woman and the educated and

Benefits Of A New Team
When I was in Noida working for Headstrong, my team used to go out for lunch on special
occasions. As that area had quite many options, sometimes we used to be in a fix as to where to go.
Another reason for long decision making was because different people had their own tastes. And,
few of them had even been to places we were zeroing–in on and didn 't want to go again. Now, that
was a mess as it would delay our outings that were supposed to become a lifetime memory for a few
at least! We tried to plan well ahead in advance, but that also had issues as people wanted to delay it
to the last minute.
We primarily relied on word–of–mouth recommendations and what we as a team preferred the most.
All in all, it used to go just fine most of the times. However, i remember one incident when one of
our new team members strongly recommended a restaurant to which his family were regular visitors
for many years. He was giving mouthwatering description of the dishes available there and most of
us melted like butter on a parantha and were looking forward to go there. Come the D–day, being a
foodie, i was especially charged up; but there was one delay after another as few of the folks were
held up in meetings. It was way past my usual lunch time and finally, we went ahead around quarter
to 3. We were all very hungry but to our utter disappointment we found the place closed.
The colleague who had recommended us looked pretty sad and asked nearby shops if the restaurant
had closed for good.

The Peace Restaurant of the Haw-Some Hickory
At first glance, you wouldn't think much of this small–town, country–style restaurant, tucked up in
the corner of a run–out plaza. Yet as you draw nearer to this establishment, you seem to hear a quiet,
but subtle sound of country music coming from inside. Upon entering you can't help but notice the
pictures of all the smiling faces that are along the walls. This is a place that welcomes families and
the whole community. Promptly before you have the chance to get too comfortable, you are greeted
and then seated. Now, seated, you have the task of looking over the menu and all of its possible
choices. Without fail, our waitress comes over, introduces herself, and asks if we would like
something to drink to start us off. Viewing the possible choices, which include some Pepsi products,
specialty sodas, and their famous strawberry lemonade. Carefully and cautiously, I pick their
strawberry lemonade as does my friend. Taking a second look at the menu, it's plain to see that it has
some wonderful sounding food. As custom, I tend to brag about places I have been before and things
that I have eaten. On this such occasion, I talked up a big game about the Fried Mac–N–Cheese. I
told my friend Tyler that I was "AMAZING!" So I took the liberty and ordered that as an appetizer
to share. At this point, our kind waitress had left us with our drinks and appetizer orders. Now,

Descriptive Essay : Jackson State Community College

Jackson State Community College is a great place where everyone can go for a head start of
education. It is even a great place where it is good people, and has a positive environment.
Instructors and administration are always there pushing you to the best of your ability. There are
many things that I love about the campus, but one thing that catches my eye is the courtyard or in
other words the quadrangle. The Quadrangle is located outside, in the center of the campus
surrounded by buildings and stands like the library, gazebo, administrative building, and nursing
building. This is a place where individuals can meet up at any giving time of the day to chill and
relax. The Quadrangle is placed where it directs you to mostly all of the buildings that Jackson State
offers. When going out to the Quadrangle it is a really nice view, full of excitement and fun. Coming
out of the classroom building facing the administrative building, on the left side is where the library
is located. The library is used for a lot of things and not just for reading books. Here at Jackson State
the library has a writing center where people teach and help you on any type of paper that is due.
Typing papers during that time spent in the library is optional as well. Printing papers and
homework is also optional with no fee of charge. In front of the library entrance is where the parking

Reflective Essay On Piano Music
I absolutely despise competitions of any kind. Really, the only competitions I compete in happen to
be for piano. For six years now, I have been taking piano lessons. I possess my fair share of
performances. One festival I have attended several times is the Sonatina Festival. Sonatina Festival is
not a normal common festival, it is a competition for first, second, and third place. The festival
contains the categories of beginner, intermediate, late intermediate, and advanced. Taking place
every February or March, Sonatina Festival comes to life.
At the age of 12 or 13, I walked through the doors of the church the festival occupied for the second
time in my life. Spending the past 5 months learning and memorizing a song was unquestionably
going to pay off. That first place under the intermediate title was mine. Confidence clouded my
mind when I walked through the doors to play my piece. The quiet room was occupied by the piano,
the judge, and me.
Nerves started kicking in, strong. My hands started shaking, my stomach was doing flips I was
playing the most unfavorable thoughts of failure in my mind. Before I knew it, my performance was
over. Personally, I thought I played my piece considerably well, but definitely not first place worthy.
Walking out of the room, I was congratulated by my mother, along with my piano teacher. Marching
out of the church that the festival was held in, a wave of relief washed over me knowing my
performance was over.

someone repeated the process we used in class. Include at least 10 marble rolls. Make sure that there
would enough evidence to estimate the size, shape, and location of the object. Explain your rationale
in between 5–7 sentences. Based on the path of the marbles in the diagram, there is enough evidence
to estimate the size of the shape, based on where the marble bounces off of the shape and where the
marble rolls past the shape. You can also use this method to determine the approximate location of
the shape. In the diagram that I drew, you would be able to determine that the shape isn't located

In what ways did this activity represent a model for Rutherford's efforts to determine the structure of
the atom? What type of thinking and evidence (direct or indirect) were necessary in order to draw
conclusions in both situations? This activity is a model for Rutherford's experiments to determine
the structure of the atom because in the activity, we rolled a marble towards a shape that we could
not see in order to determine its size, shape, and location, just as Rutherford observed how particles
bounced off of or went through a sheet of gold foil, in order to determine the size, shape, and
properties of atoms. We used the angles at which the marble bounced off of the shape in order to
determine the properties of that shape in our activity, and in Rutherford's experiments, he observed
how the particles bounced off of or went through the gold foil, in order to determine the atom's
properties. Also, we used a piece of cardboard to cover our target because Rutherford was not able
to see the atoms that he was studying. In order to draw conclusions in both situations, you need to
determine what makes the marble or particle roll or travel the way it does. For example, in the
experiments, if the particle went straight through the gold leaf and in our activity, if the marble rolls
straight through the cardboard, you can infer that the particles and the marble didn't hit the target.
However, if the marble or particle bounced off of the target at an angle, you need to be able to use
those angles to determine what shape and size the target is and where it is

Corruption And City Problems In The Twentieth Century
In the early to mid–twentieth century there was a lot of corruption and city problems as these new
cities were being built. Since most cities were built so fast there was bad housing which lead to
diseases spreading very rapidly, and there was horrible working conditions. Many of these cities
were dangers for the people that lived there. Diseases started to spread very rapidly in this period of
time. Different social groups later into the twentieth century would try and stop them. Some of these
groups would succeed in their attempts to make their–homes and work places better
Do to rapid growth of cities problems started to arise for both people and animals. Immigrants
coming into the cities were bringing all types of animals. They would let their animals walk around
the cities. Since both cars and animals occupied the streets things began to became over crowded. In
Brooklyn there were about 26,000 horses each producing 20 lbs. of manure and several gallons of
urine each day. When a horse or any other animal would die people sometimes left the bodies in the
streets. the streets where piled high with garbage since there was not a waste system in place. At
some points people could not get to the streets to get to their cars. Tenement life was pretty bad.
Most of the apartment buildings being built had no to little ventilation. Most of the time more than
one family would be placed in each apartment. Since there were hardly any ventilation diseases
spread very rapidly. Since

Literary Analysis Of 'The Haunted Boy'
Literary Analysis– The Haunted Boy
The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up
certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny
day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate
event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story "The Haunted Boy"
to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how
uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when
he remembers happy memories.
The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the
only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers' short story starts out by describing
the day having sunshine on a mid–April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These
descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about
how the boys are running outside in the warm. "Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him.
They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them" (page 675). This
shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the
place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. "Sometimes she would be out
fooling with the border of spring flowers– the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had
taught him the names)..." (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character
thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind.
One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The
kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen,
there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going
well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that
made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no
note from his

Explore How Perceptions of Belonging or Not Belonging Are...
A connection to a physical location may present us with the perception that we either belong or not
belong however, it is the connections that we form with people in places, memories of previous
places and ones response to experiences within places that heightens ones sense of belonging or
alienation. The concept of belonging through connections with people, experiences and memories in
certain places is explored in the texts Romulus my Father a memoir by Raimond Gaita and Oranges
and Sunshine directed by Jim Loach.
It is not a connection with the physical landscape that allows us to experience a sense of inclusion
but rather connections built with people or communities that either heighten ones sense of affiliation
or estrangement. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Raimond also justifies his mother's affair with Mitru when he describes his mother as "a troubled
girl from central Europe who could not settle in the dilapidated landscape that heightened her
isolation". The complexity of the bond is developed through Anna's first attempt at suicide, which is
more of a desperate cry for help; "In words that were barely comprehensible she said that she loved
me and wanted to say goodbye, that she would fall asleep and then die". This vivid memory of his
mother saying goodbye leads to a very complex bond between the pair. Perhaps the most intense
memory of his mother that Gaita has is the memory of his mother returning from hospital after this
suicide attempt, "alone, small, frail, walking with an uncertain gait and a distracted air. In the vast
landscape with only crude wire fences and a rough track to mark an human impression on it she
appeared forsaken. She looked at me as though she had returned from the dead, unsure about the
value of her achievement". The memory is bittersweet, although she is alive after a failed suicide
attempt; she conveys a vivid impression of someone who does not belong in the place they are in
and does not seem to belong in that life. Raymond's memories of experiences at Frogmore,
especially experiences with regards to his mother, has shaped and built his connection with
Frogmore allowing him to experience

My individual record was also undefeated as well and it was strenuous, to say the least but also
rewarding. Day two we knew was going to be the toughest competition and most stressful. It's that
day that by the end, you know basically what you are competing for. Whether it is for the
championship title or to place overall top ten. All other competition gets done by the end of the
second day and for that to happen means a profusion of matches. The first match of the day was
against a very skillful Alabama team, we won respectfully and geared up for our next match. Giving
it all I had was not enough nor was the whole team's full effort enough to defeat the notorious club
team from New York. The loss was not taken lightly so we moved on knowing we needed to get two
consecutive wins in order to make it in the top 10. At this point in time, I was very anxious to see
how strong our team really is because I really thought we had more in us than what we put out on
the mat the last match. My record was now 4–1 which was looking very impressive. Moving into
our next match I had opened up the first match knowing it was important and I set the tone of the
match I would say with a huge win over a multiple time state champion from the Florida team. My

very grueling match to be a part of because all that was on my mind was the fact that with a huge

A Different History and Where I Come from Essay
Elizabeth Brewster and Sujata Bhatt both suggest the significance of place in helping to shape a
person's identity in their poems but they do it in different ways.
Brewster suggests that places change our identity when she writes "People are made of places". This
shows that every different place we visit we take the memories and experiences that we had there
and keep them in our minds and hearts forever. Whereas Bhatt suggests that when we go to a new
place we forget who we previously were and change ourselves so that we fit in with the new culture
that we are living in. We know this from when she says "And how does it happen/ that after the
torture". This shows the struggle to keep your cultural heritage when you move places.
In "A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "Where I Come From" Brewster uses the metaphor "ice and the breaking of ice". This is to show
that even though you are in a different place than you are used to you are ready to break the ice
when meeting new people and having new experiences. Bhatt suggests that you bring the
conventions to the country you move to from your old country and then you add to them from the
things you learn in the new culture that you are living in. We know this because she says "Great Pan
is not dead". This also shows that your cultural heritage will never die as it will always be a part of
you whether it's obvious or not.
Elizabeth Brewster suggests that places change our identities when she says "nature tidily plotted in
little squares". This gives us the impression that everyone in the city is the same and they are all neat
and tidy busybodies. This differs from what Bhatt suggests when she says "Here, the gods roam
freely, / disguised as snakes or monkeys". This shows that in India you can be whoever or whatever
you want without being judged by anyone and you can be unique.
However "A Different History" is similar to what Brewster is suggesting as Bhatt writes "every tree
is sacred". This shows that everything and everyone is equal and has the same rights as each other.
Brewster shows that in her homeland everything is different because there are, "battered

Essay on Sula
Things can happen in some places and the tale of them will be interesting. The same story laid in
another city would be ridiculous. Setting situates the story`s events, characters and mood through
place, time and weather. Without the different dimensions of setting, a story would not have the
diversity to introduce new or changed characters, define their true identities, compare societies and
reveal hidden emotions. Through Morrison`s Sula, setting is used as the key factor behind every
event that occurred.
In order to introduce a changed character back to a story the author must first present the character
to a new different environment. In Morrison`s novel we see that Shadrack, Plum and Sula go away
from the Bottom and return completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When characters are placed in different situations, they tend to reveal their true identities. In most
cases setting is used to identify a characters true characteristics or intentions. The purpose of this is
to entertain the plot of the story. As the story moves on, characters are not necessarily changed but
more over presented in different characteristics that the reader had not seen them in before. "Helene
Wright was an impressive woman, at least in Medallion she was." (Morrison, 11) Respected by
many in Medallion because of her physique, when presented in a new setting, Helene was stripped
away by one word, "gal." A simple change of place, proved that Helene was not different than the
other women in Medallion. The highly admired woman was now lowering herself from the "lady"
image she had obtained by being coquette to a white conductor.
Writers use setting to reveal the hidden emotions of characters. Characters react differently when
placed in particular environments. Morrison used this technique, when in a single chapter she
portrayed Sula in two distinct moods. In chapter 1922, Sula is introduced as upfront and tough when
"she slashed off only the tip of her finger" (Morrison, 54) to intimidate her bullies. A young girl who
is not terrified, "if I can do that to myself, what you suppose ill do to you?" (Morrison, 55) is later
on placed in an environment of comfort and viewed as

The Classroom Is A Critical Locus For Student...
"The classroom is a critical locus for student interpersonal and educational development" (Hudgins
et al, 37, 1994). When a student walks into a classroom their first impression is the physical
classroom environment. A student either sees the classroom as a positive place to learn or a negative
space they are forced to attend every day. Research has shown that students subject matter,
achievement and attitudes improve when the teacher creates a physical classroom environment that
is more conducive to learning. (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). "Well–run classrooms begin with the
room's physical layout" (Shalaway). First things first, a classroom 's physical layout should reflect
the teaching style of the teacher. As a future teacher, the style of teaching that I value the most is
partner collaboration. I find that students learn to the best of their ability when they can bounce
ideas off each other and corporate in table groups. In the center of my classroom, I have placed my
student's tables with a group of chairs around the table. This will give my students the opportunity to
work and collaborate with each other. I have also made sure that students tables are far enough apart
so that there is an aisle big enough for students and disabled students to get up and down the aisle

Place Symbolism And Land Politics In Beowulf
Stuart Elden, in his article "Place Symbolism and Land Politics in Beowulf", discusses the usage of
place in Beowulf. He declares, "In this text, site and place are given a range of symbolic, material,
and emotive resonances." There are copious examples in Beowulf where place has significant
meaning. Settings are presented as either good or bad, boundaries are set and crossed, and the
placement of boundaries created conflict and exclusion.
In Beowulf, there are many places that are clearly presented as good and bad, safe and unsafe. In the
text, the reader learns about places that have a somewhat concrete goodness or turmoil present.
Heorot Hall described in the beginning of Beowulf is one of the good places. Of the hall, it is
written, "Soon it stood there, finished and ready, in full view, the hall of halls". The hall is
representative of the community and the identity of the realm, as well as serving as a gathering place
for the people to drink and socialize. Elden describes the hall as a place of great joy and celebration,
as well as a sacred place for various ceremonies and rituals to take place (cite this and make sure
proper paraphrasing). These descriptions create a sense of community and safety in the hall. In
contrast, there are many places, such as Grendel's mere or the dragon's lair, that are presented in a
much darker, evil light creating a bad place. The mere is described with a level of ambiguity that
creates a sense of unsettlement and eeriness in the reader.

The Physical Importance Of Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor recreation, but more specifically a place attachment that can be associated with outdoor
recreation, has had a huge impact on my life. Throughout my childhood, my family and I would
constantly travel to many outdoor recreation locations including Myrtle Beach, Pinery Provincial
Park, and St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. These places hold special meaning and an emotional bond for
me, because I associate them with youthfulness and happiness. While everybody views place
differently, people form emotional attachments and beliefs of these places based on different
specifications. According to Williams and Stewart (1998), individuals may feel a special connection
to a place based on its social or personal history, scenic beauty, or spiritual meaning (p. 22). To truly
understand the meaning of place and the importance of outdoor recreation, I recently took part in
four separate experiential activities at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in Waterloo, Ontario. After
partaking in four outdoor experiential episodes at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, I decided to create a
time capsule of my experience for people to open fifty years from now. The time capsule included
post cards, photos of my experience, and a few physical components that I found represented the
market well and represented the importance of outdoor–recreation. One of the physical components
was a maple sugar candy to represent how maple was an important staple to Canadians, and how
procuring maple syrup is an activity that can

Alan Bennett's Talking Heads characters reflect life decisions

  • 1. Essay on Alan Bennett Talking Heads Alan Bennett Talking Heads In Bennett's monologues the main character faces an important decision which will affect the course of their lives. I will go on and explain in this essay, the play writer's use of literary techniques – including setting, theme and characterisation– which may make the decision seem correct or not. Talking Heads was originally produced for BBC television but has recently been used as a collection of short stories. Each of the characters portrayed, is played by an actress that has been previously associated with Alan Bennett e.g.:Thora Hird who plays Doris worked on a BBC Radio 4 programme – Deadringers .It is safe to say that Alan Bennett tailored some of the material, to suit the actors, own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bennett reflects this very well by transferring this British habit to his characters. All of them are dead against a change in their lifestyle. This is excellently demonstrated in 'A Cream Cracker'– Doris wants to stay in her house, but the council recommends she moves to a nursing home , but she refuses on the grounds of hygiene– clearly this shows that she is against a change of setting and a change of life and this is cleverly portrayed throughout the plays. Is their setting a safe haven or a prison? Looked at from different angles, we all would have different views. With Graham, his home and mainly his bedroom is a sanctuary for him, some where he can escape prejudice and critics, but on reflection what they really are – is a hiding place , a place for Graham to hide away and wallow in self pity. But for Irene she feels her home is a prison. She has no freedom or liberty, no way to express herself. The only way she achieves this is by writing letters which may anger or offend other members in the community. But as she enters an actual prison she feels more freedom than when she was actually a free woman, that may seem strange to you and I, but for some people, this can be reality and a break from a life they do not enjoy. When dealing with Doris, it is or can be a confusing situation, from different viewpoints it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Miss Irene Ruddock is an ordinary middle–aged woman who lives on her own. She was close to her mother who had recently passed away. Miss Ruddock has no real friends and finds it difficult to fill her time so she is often sitting in her chair, looking out of her window and noting what is going on in other people's lives. She has no social life and she only leaves the house when she has to. Alan Bennett shows Miss Ruddock's loneliness through her obsession of writing letters. She uses these letters as a way of communicating with the world outside her home. In the drama, before going to prison, we do not hear Miss Ruddock have a meaningful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a computer generated letter sent to all customers after a certain amount of time, and Miss Ruddock replies to by saying she 'thought it very considerate of them for drawing this to my attention and in the event of me noticing any deterioration I would...get in touch with them'. This is another example of loneliness as it shows her desperation to communicate with the outside world and will use any excuses to do so. Miss Ruddock is lonely because she leads a very lacklustre life. Other than writing inappropriate letters to anyone she see's fit, she spends a lot of her time sitting in her chair by the window, often looking over the actions of her neighbour's and casting judgement over their lifestyles. An example of this is when she says 'Well, you've got a car, you've got a transistor, it's about time you invested in some curtains'. At the beginning of the monologue we find out that Miss Ruddock attended the funeral of somebody who, until their obituary was posted in the local newspaper, she had called the wrong name. she feels that they are similar because 'She lost her mother around the same time I lost mine, she had a niece in Australia and I have one cousin in Canada, then she went in for gas–fired central heating just a few weeks before I did'. This shows that she is lonely because she is so desperate to have something to do in her leisure time that she would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. My Experience : My Personal Experience In High School My junior year was the third and final year that I was enrolled in the business academy at my high school. Being in the business academy was just a sophisticated way of saying that I was taking an online business course through a local community college. It also meant that I was automatically a part of a career and technical student organization called Business Professionals of America. For the three previous years, I had participated in the Regional BPA Competition, however, I fell short one place of qualifying for the State Competition each year. By the time the winter of my junior year came around, I became determined to finally qualify for State. Placing first or second at State would enable me to attend Nationals which was held in Orlando. Nevertheless, my ultimate goal was to compete at the State level. I studied and practiced more than I ever had in the past. I rummaged through an abundance of resources and asked my business teacher a plethora of questions to ensure that I understood the material well. When the time had come in February, I worked on my contest diligently and I revised it multiple times before submitting it. I was sanguine about my final product, but I also didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case the outcome was not what I was wishing for. On a chilly February morning, the business academy students, including myself, boarded a school bus headed for Greenville High School for the Regional BPAAwards Ceremony. Sitting in the very back row of the auditorium, I waited anxiously for my contest to be announced. After what felt like a lifetime, I spotted my name projected onto the big screen which indicated that I had made it into the top five, and it was time for me to report to the stage. As the bright warm lights hit my face, I hoped that the crowd wouldn't be able to see my shaking knees. Starting with sixth place, the announcer called out what place each contestant came in. Finally it was down to second and first place and my name had not yet been called. I was overwhelmed with relief knowing that no matter what place I came in at that point, I had qualified for State. I ended up placing first and my teacher congratulated me with a candy bar as I went back to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Vincent O’Sullivan’S Finding The Pattern, Solving The In Vincent O'Sullivan's Finding the Pattern, Solving the Problem: Katherine Mansfield The New Zealand European, it is noted that Katherine Mansfield 'was an enthusiast for the cinema', that 'she acted in several movies' and that 'her letters frequently took up such images as the months that "stream by like a movie picture"'(18). Furthermore, her short story At the Bay begins with the line 'Very early morning'(Mansfield 5), that when interpreted from a literary standpoint, is more suited to a screenplay direction than the opening of a narrative. From studying At the Bay, alongside The Garden Party and Miss Brill, it is evident that her love of cinema influences her own writing, to the point where techniques that are prominently filmic, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 'big bush–covered hills'(Mansfield 1) and 'sandy road with shallow puddles(2) of the opening are made evident that they're not situated by the 'weed–hung rocks' and 'small rock pools'(20) of a later section, yet the consistency of the style in which each area is described, the narrative voice wandering from components of the setting, such as the 'tide' to the 'sunlight' (20) to the 'green binds...in the bungalows'(21) and the 'pawa shells'(21), not unlike a montage, unite the set of surroundings by replicating the manner in which they are portrayed. This parallels Citizen Kane's 'News of the World' sequence, a montage that uses accurate renditions of a series of news segments, where newspapers and footage are both crafted to look as authentic and possible, to create a realistic depiction of media coverage that encompasses the globe through the different languages printed on certain newspapers. This of course brings different places together to add to the legibility of the scene and thus its overall realism. Much like Mansfield, Welles uses the idea of consistency and replication in his montage as a way of uniting it to the real world. Yet this montage sequence in Citizen Kane fulfills another purpose. This scene takes place directly after Kane's death, a sombre, moving moment. By directly contrasting that moment with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The House on Mango Street The short story by Sandra Cisneros revolves truly around the tittle "The House on Mango Street" and how her family moved from places to places to get there. The recollection of the street names her family lived on and how every time they moved "there'd be one more of us" added to the authors focus of emphasizing how important the word "home" meant to her throughout the story. The family of six included Mama, Papa, brothers Carlos and Kiki, and sister Nenny. According to the author's memory, she had lived on Loomis, Keeler and Paulina. "We don't have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people, downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn't a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom." The authors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author had high expectation for this house, but fails to realize that her family was constantly moving from one poor district of Chicago to another. The addition of a family member every time they moved didn't help their economic status either due to the increase in budget when you have one more child to take care of. The major themes of the short story were home, family, poverty and self– identity. Cisneros need for a home is much related to her economic situation, her dreams and frustrations towards her family. Someone to blame for this would be Mama and Papa that keep forming this image of the perfect house in the authors mind. "This was the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us before we went to bed." The severity of her disappointment and the shame is demonstrated when she describes the house on Mango Street. "Where do you live? she asked. There, I said pointing up to the third floor. You live there? There... I lived there. I nodded." The exchange of question and answer between the nun and the author created a tome of tension to the dialogue. The italicizing of text tied into the theme of home and the verbal beating tolerated by the author. The short story ends with "I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it...For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa, But I know how those things go." This statement by Cisneros is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Sense of Tragedy and Humour in alan Bennett's Talking Heads Monologues Alan Bennett uses a variety of techniques to convey a sense of both tragedy and humour in his 'Talking Heads' monologues. I will be looking specifically at 'Bed Among The Lentils' and 'Cream Cracker Under The Settee.' Alan Bennett achieves both of these effects by use of several clever choices regarding the casting as well as sound and visual effects. There are two very different types of humour in 'Bed Among The Lentils' and 'Cream Cracker Under The Settee'. BATL uses a lot of sarcastic, bitter humour whereas CCUTS uses some wry, discreet humour and at times Doris, the elderly woman in CCUTS, seems to be mocking herself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Susan is a very sarcastic and bitter person. This may be due to her marriage with Geoffrey as this is a very boring situation for her. Not only this, Geoffrey exploits her alcoholism to make people think he is a caring husband willing to stand by his wife every step of the way. 'He grips my hand in public, nay brandishes it.' This line implies that Susan feels trapped in her marriage and is unable to stop Geoffrey taking control and making her decisions for her. Doris has also had a very unhappy life with several tragic incidents, most notably, the loss of her baby at a very young age. 'I wanted him called John. The midwife said he wasn't fit to be called anything' 'All them years ago when we were first married and I was having the baby.' These lines show that Doris lives in the past a lot and this probably contributes to her sadness as she is unable to move on from the loss of her baby and later, the loss of her husband. Doris is also extremely reliant on Zulema to carry out jobs in and around the house for her. this frustrates Doris as she would rather be doing this herself to ensure that they are done properly. • 24. The History Boys by Alan Bennett Can someone be born evil or is the ability to be immoral something that's acquired through the environment? Various techniques were used by Alan Bennett in the History Boys to convey how Hector wasn't purely immoral because he let his sexual desires lead to the fondling of his student's genitals, but because he was a dedicated educator who would stop at no means including disconnection with the traditional form of teaching in order to per–quire his students futures through alternative education. The most salient feature is the use of diverse characters in order to evoke how they all have dreams of a more secure future through selective college acceptance even though they come from different religions, sexual orientations, and even wealth levels. The students might have been different, but that one goal of securing a brighter future lead to them being physically groped by their teacher, Hector. The physical groping of an underage minor by an adult educator seems immoral and is unjustifiable especially considering that many of the boys put up with the groping in order for Hector to continue teaching them so they might stand a possibility of passing the entrance exams. The groping is an inexcusable act Hector exhibits, but the groping is only a little part of his character as he doesn't teach the boys in the standard mode of learning through lectures and note taking "God doesn't do notes, either. Comparing Home in Richard Ford's I Must Be Going and Scott Sander's Homeplace Most people define home as a comfortable setting which provides love and warmth. In Scott Sanders "Homeplace" and Richard Ford's "I Must Be Going" the concept of home is defined in two different ways. Sanders believes that by moving from place to place, the meaning of home has been diminished. Sanders believes that America's culture "nudges everyone into motion" (Sanders 103) and that his "longing to become an inhabitant rather than a drifter" (103) is what sets him apart from everyone else. Ford prefers to stay on the move. His argument is life's too short to settle in one place. He believes home is where you make it, but permanence is not a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sanders has a different opinion of moving just to see other places. Sanders believes that in order to know a place one must "root" themselves into it. Sanders proposes that "if you are not yourself placed, then you wander the world like a sightseer, a collector of sensations, with no gauge for measuring what you see" (103). Ford has a different feeling. He believes that seeing all of these places creates memory, and imagination of these other places just provides an illusion of what is really going on in the world. He says, "Memory always needs replenishing, and anyway you misunderstand imagination and how it thrives in us by extending partial knowledge to complete any illusion of reality" (Ford 110). Sanders would disagree that home is not a place. He starts out his essay with a story of a family whose house is destroyed by a tornado three times. Each time they rebuild in the same spot. Sanders admires this family for their commitment to their home. Sanders believes length of time in an area has a definite effect on someone's meaning for that place. Sanders is encouraged by the words of Gary Snyder in The Practice of the Wild: "You know, I think if people stay somewhere long enough, the spirits will begin to speak to them" (104). Ford does not believe in commitment to a place. He quotes Ralph Emerson saying, "We live amid surfaces, and the true art of life is to skate well on them" (Ford ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I Liked More Was The One From Gretel Ehrlich The essay I liked more was the one from Gretel Ehrlich I liked this essay because when she was telling her story she was focusing on only one place. This essay was very different than Annie Dillard I say this because when Annie was talking she didn't focus on only one place in her essay she was focusing on many different places. I personally think that the essay from Gretel Ehrich was the best. Why I think is the best is because when I was reading it I felt like I can picture what she was talking about in my head. As I was readying this essay I felt like I can place myself in the place she was describing for example when she was taking about being at the farm and other things she made reference too. This essay was just really calm, essay to fallow, it was clear, and as I as readying it I felt like I was connected to it. this is why I liked this essay more than the one from Annie Dillard when I was readying the essay from Annie I just could focus on what she was talking about because she would take her story to multiple places. She would be talking about one thing and then she would all the sudden change it and this is what I didn't like about her essay because it was just really hard to fallow with all the multiple places she was referring too. Another thing I think like about it I that when it was telling her story she would repeat herself. This is what made it hard for me to understand, it's just crazy and goes on and on. • 42. Essay on Analysis of Comparable Worth and the Common Good The Federal Government has been struggling for almost four decades now to close the gap between the wages of men and women. In the 1960's, women were paid approximately 60 cents for every dollar men received for their work. Although progress has been made since Congress passed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, equality has not yet been achieved. Today, thirty–six years later, women still earn only seventy–six percent of the wages of men. Early studies found convincing evidence that women were being construed as inferior when it came to their work. Jobs that were dominated by women were paid less than male–dominated jobs, not because they were intrinsically worth less, but because they were dominated by women (Treiman & Hartmann, 1981:93; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jobs are judged similar, thus comparable, based on composite ratings of requirements such as skill, effort, responsibility, or other factors valued by an organization. All in all, comparable worth is necessary because discriminatory pay practices of the past were not fully addressed by equal employment opportunity legislation, and thus effects have been perpetuated by conventional pay administration practices (Taylor, 1989). Comparable worth rests on the theory that pay differentials are caused by sex discrimination. It proposes that sexual segregation in jobs has unjustly depressed women workers' wages. According to Wittig (1989), we may look at how this segregation has contributed to the wage gap from two viewpoints. Firstly, a significant portion of the sex pay gap has undoubtedly been caused by job placement discrimination, which has placed women into less skilled, less demanding jobs. Secondly, the gap may be caused by "female" jobs being assigned lower pay, even when the jobs require skill equal to that in "male" jobs. There are several ways that this discrimination may be sustained: 1) job segregation related to prejudice by employers, consumers, and co–workers; 2) devaluation of jobs performed primarily by women and minority men; and 3) women and minority men's job choices, assertiveness about pay, and other group tendencies (Wittig, 1989). So, how does one go about achieving comparable worth in their organization, you may bee wondering? First, a method must be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Analyzing Alan Bennett 's ' The History Boys ' And '... In this essay I will be analysing how Alan Bennett's 'The History Boys' and 'Educating Rita' by Willy Russell investigate the notion that 'all knowledge is precious whether or not it serves the slightest human use' along with how they explore the purpose of education. Educating Rita is about the journey of Rita, a twenty–six year old working class woman from Liverpool, entering the world of formal education through an Open University course or as she refers to it as a 'degree for dishwashers'. Rita's peers disapprove of formal education. Despite this, she has a desire to learn 'everything' even though this could lead to rejection from her family and community. She is simply learning for the pleasure of education and with the hope that this education will allow her to enter a wider world. The History boys is a journey of a group of Northern working and middle class grammar school boys, who are aspiring to get into – Oxbridge on scholarships, with the aid of two contrasting teachers, one who believes that education is solely for the purpose of grades and another who teaches 'gobbets of information' for the purpose of personal gain. Educating Rita begins with the female protagonist Rita having difficulty entering her professor Frank's office, 'I'm comin' in, aren't I? It's that stupid bleedin' handle on the door. You wanna get it fixed!' she exclaims. This is a metaphor for the barrier between her current status as a poorly educated working class woman and the educated and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And, few of them had even been to places we were zeroing–in on and didn 't want to go again. Now, that was a mess as it would delay our outings that were supposed to become a lifetime memory for a few at least! It is even a great place where it is good people, and has a positive environment. Instructors and administration are always there pushing you to the best of your ability. There are many things that I love about the campus, but one thing that catches my eye is the courtyard or in other words the quadrangle. The Quadrangle is located outside, in the center of the campus surrounded by buildings and stands like the library, gazebo, administrative building, and nursing building. This is a place where individuals can meet up at any giving time of the day to chill and relax. The Quadrangle is placed where it directs you to mostly all of the buildings that Jackson State offers. When going out to the Quadrangle it is a really nice view, full of excitement and fun. • 56. Reflective Essay On Piano Music I absolutely despise competitions of any kind. Really, the only competitions I compete in happen to be for piano. For six years now, I have been taking piano lessons. I possess my fair share of performances. One festival I have attended several times is the Sonatina Festival. Sonatina Festival is not a normal common festival, it is a competition for first, second, and third place. The festival contains the categories of beginner, intermediate, late intermediate, and advanced. Taking place every February or March, Sonatina Festival comes to life. At the age of 12 or 13, I walked through the doors of the church the festival occupied for the second time in my life. Spending the past 5 months learning and memorizing a song was unquestionably going to pay off. That first place under the intermediate title was mine. Confidence clouded my mind when I walked through the doors to play my piece. The quiet room was occupied by the piano, the judge, and me. Nerves started kicking in, strong. My hands started shaking, my stomach was doing flips I was playing the most unfavorable thoughts of failure in my mind. Before I knew it, my performance was over. Personally, I thought I played my piece considerably well, but definitely not first place worthy. Walking out of the room, I was congratulated by my mother, along with my piano teacher. Marching out of the church that the festival was held in, a wave of relief washed over me knowing my performance was over. Driving around the heights, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Rutherford's Lab Essay 1. Choose one of the two shapes above and draw what the path of the marbles might look like if someone repeated the process we used in class. Include at least 10 marble rolls. Make sure that there would enough evidence to estimate the size, shape, and location of the object. Explain your rationale in between 5–7 sentences. Based on the path of the marbles in the diagram, there is enough evidence to estimate the size of the shape, based on where the marble bounces off of the shape and where the marble rolls past the shape. You can also use this method to determine the approximate location of the shape. In the diagram that I drew, you would be able to determine that the shape isn't located towards the top or bottom of the cardboard and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In what ways did this activity represent a model for Rutherford's efforts to determine the structure of the atom? What type of thinking and evidence (direct or indirect) were necessary in order to draw conclusions in both situations? This activity is a model for Rutherford's experiments to determine the structure of the atom because in the activity, we rolled a marble towards a shape that we could not see in order to determine its size, shape, and location, just as Rutherford observed how particles bounced off of or went through a sheet of gold foil, in order to determine the size, shape, and properties of atoms. We used the angles at which the marble bounced off of the shape in order to determine the properties of that shape in our activity, and in Rutherford's experiments, he observed how the particles bounced off of or went through the gold foil, in order to determine the atom's properties. Also, we used a piece of cardboard to cover our target because Rutherford was not able to see the atoms that he was studying. In order to draw conclusions in both situations, you need to determine what makes the marble or particle roll or travel the way it does. For example, in the experiments, if the particle went straight through the gold leaf and in our activity, if the marble rolls straight through the cardboard, you can infer that the particles and the marble didn't hit the target. However, if the marble or particle bounced off of the target at an angle, you need to be able to use those angles to determine what shape and size the target is and where it is ... • 60. Corruption And City Problems In The Twentieth Century In the early to mid–twentieth century there was a lot of corruption and city problems as these new cities were being built. Since most cities were built so fast there was bad housing which lead to diseases spreading very rapidly, and there was horrible working conditions. Many of these cities were dangers for the people that lived there. Diseases started to spread very rapidly in this period of time. Different social groups later into the twentieth century would try and stop them. Some of these groups would succeed in their attempts to make their–homes and work places better Do to rapid growth of cities problems started to arise for both people and animals. Immigrants coming into the cities were bringing all types of animals. They would let their animals walk around the cities. Since both cars and animals occupied the streets things began to became over crowded. In Brooklyn there were about 26,000 horses each producing 20 lbs. of manure and several gallons of urine each day. When a horse or any other animal would die people sometimes left the bodies in the streets. the streets where piled high with garbage since there was not a waste system in place. At some points people could not get to the streets to get to their cars. Tenement life was pretty bad. Most of the apartment buildings being built had no to little ventilation. Most of the time more than one family would be placed in each apartment. Since there were hardly any ventilation diseases spread very rapidly. Since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Literary Analysis Of 'The Haunted Boy' Literary Analysis– The Haunted Boy The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story "The Haunted Boy" to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when he remembers happy memories. The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers' short story starts out by describing the day having sunshine on a mid–April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. "Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them" (page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. "Sometimes she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers– the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught him the names)..." (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind. One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen, there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Explore How Perceptions of Belonging or Not Belonging Are... A connection to a physical location may present us with the perception that we either belong or not belong however, it is the connections that we form with people in places, memories of previous places and ones response to experiences within places that heightens ones sense of belonging or alienation. The concept of belonging through connections with people, experiences and memories in certain places is explored in the texts Romulus my Father a memoir by Raimond Gaita and Oranges and Sunshine directed by Jim Loach. It is not a connection with the physical landscape that allows us to experience a sense of inclusion but rather connections built with people or communities that either heighten ones sense of affiliation or estrangement. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raimond also justifies his mother's affair with Mitru when he describes his mother as "a troubled girl from central Europe who could not settle in the dilapidated landscape that heightened her isolation". The complexity of the bond is developed through Anna's first attempt at suicide, which is more of a desperate cry for help; "In words that were barely comprehensible she said that she loved me and wanted to say goodbye, that she would fall asleep and then die". This vivid memory of his mother saying goodbye leads to a very complex bond between the pair. Perhaps the most intense memory of his mother that Gaita has is the memory of his mother returning from hospital after this suicide attempt, "alone, small, frail, walking with an uncertain gait and a distracted air. In the vast landscape with only crude wire fences and a rough track to mark an human impression on it she appeared forsaken. She looked at me as though she had returned from the dead, unsure about the value of her achievement". The memory is bittersweet, although she is alive after a failed suicide attempt; she conveys a vivid impression of someone who does not belong in the place they are in and does not seem to belong in that life. My individual record was also undefeated as well and it was strenuous, to say the least but also rewarding. Day two we knew was going to be the toughest competition and most stressful. It's that day that by the end, you know basically what you are competing for. Whether it is for the championship title or to place overall top ten. All other competition gets done by the end of the second day and for that to happen means a profusion of matches. The first match of the day was against a very skillful Alabama team, we won respectfully and geared up for our next match. Giving it all I had was not enough nor was the whole team's full effort enough to defeat the notorious club team from New York. The loss was not taken lightly so we moved on knowing we needed to get two consecutive wins in order to make it in the top 10. At this point in time, I was very anxious to see how strong our team really is because I really thought we had more in us than what we put out on the mat the last match. My record was now 4–1 which was looking very impressive. Moving into our next match I had opened up the first match knowing it was important and I set the tone of the match I would say with a huge win over a multiple time state champion from the Florida team. My team won that match, meaning that we were going up against the returning champion team called "Young Guns" from Pennsylvania. That match was safe to say the most adrenaline I have had in my body going at one time. The match really came down to the final bouts of the match, making it a very grueling match to be a part of because all that was on my mind was the fact that with a huge win here means we sealed the deal the place top ten at the least! I and most of the team picked up very courageous wins over our opponents bringing us to victory in the end of that match. • 68. A Different History and Where I Come from Essay Elizabeth Brewster and Sujata Bhatt both suggest the significance of place in helping to shape a person's identity in their poems but they do it in different ways. Brewster suggests that places change our identity when she writes "People are made of places". This shows that every different place we visit we take the memories and experiences that we had there and keep them in our minds and hearts forever. Whereas Bhatt suggests that when we go to a new place we forget who we previously were and change ourselves so that we fit in with the new culture that we are living in. We know this from when she says "And how does it happen/ that after the torture". This shows the struggle to keep your cultural heritage when you move places. In "A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "Where I Come From" Brewster uses the metaphor "ice and the breaking of ice". This is to show that even though you are in a different place than you are used to you are ready to break the ice when meeting new people and having new experiences. Bhatt suggests that you bring the conventions to the country you move to from your old country and then you add to them from the things you learn in the new culture that you are living in. We know this because she says "Great Pan is not dead". This also shows that your cultural heritage will never die as it will always be a part of you whether it's obvious or not. Elizabeth Brewster suggests that places change our identities when she says "nature tidily plotted in little squares". This gives us the impression that everyone in the city is the same and they are all neat and tidy busybodies. This differs from what Bhatt suggests when she says "Here, the gods roam freely, / disguised as snakes or monkeys". This shows that in India you can be whoever or whatever you want without being judged by anyone and you can be unique. However "A Different History" is similar to what Brewster is suggesting as Bhatt writes "every tree is sacred". This shows that everything and everyone is equal and has the same rights as each other. Brewster shows that in her homeland everything is different because there are, "battered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Essay on Sula Things can happen in some places and the tale of them will be interesting. The same story laid in another city would be ridiculous. Setting situates the story`s events, characters and mood through place, time and weather. Without the different dimensions of setting, a story would not have the diversity to introduce new or changed characters, define their true identities, compare societies and reveal hidden emotions. Through Morrison`s Sula, setting is used as the key factor behind every event that occurred. In order to introduce a changed character back to a story the author must first present the character to a new different environment. In Morrison`s novel we see that Shadrack, Plum and Sula go away from the Bottom and return completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When characters are placed in different situations, they tend to reveal their true identities. In most cases setting is used to identify a characters true characteristics or intentions. The purpose of this is to entertain the plot of the story. As the story moves on, characters are not necessarily changed but more over presented in different characteristics that the reader had not seen them in before. "Helene Wright was an impressive woman, at least in Medallion she was." (Morrison, 11) Respected by many in Medallion because of her physique, when presented in a new setting, Helene was stripped away by one word, "gal." A simple change of place, proved that Helene was not different than the other women in Medallion. The highly admired woman was now lowering herself from the "lady" image she had obtained by being coquette to a white conductor. Writers use setting to reveal the hidden emotions of characters. Characters react differently when placed in particular environments. Morrison used this technique, when in a single chapter she portrayed Sula in two distinct moods. In chapter 1922, Sula is introduced as upfront and tough when "she slashed off only the tip of her finger" (Morrison, 54) to intimidate her bullies. A young girl who is not terrified, "if I can do that to myself, what you suppose ill do to you?" (Morrison, 55) is later on placed in an environment of comfort and viewed as ... • 72. The Classroom Is A Critical Locus For Student... "The classroom is a critical locus for student interpersonal and educational development" (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). When a student walks into a classroom their first impression is the physical classroom environment. A student either sees the classroom as a positive place to learn or a negative space they are forced to attend every day. Research has shown that students subject matter, achievement and attitudes improve when the teacher creates a physical classroom environment that is more conducive to learning. (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). "Well–run classrooms begin with the room's physical layout" (Shalaway). First things first, a classroom 's physical layout should reflect the teaching style of the teacher. As a future teacher, the style of teaching that I value the most is partner collaboration. I find that students learn to the best of their ability when they can bounce ideas off each other and corporate in table groups. In the center of my classroom, I have placed my student's tables with a group of chairs around the table. This will give my students the opportunity to work and collaborate with each other. I have also made sure that students tables are far enough apart so that there is an aisle big enough for students and disabled students to get up and down the aisle easily. In front of the tables, I have placed a mini lesson rug by the smart board. The mini lesson rug will act as an extra place for mini lessons and further needed instruction/practice for ... • 74. Place Symbolism And Land Politics In Beowulf Stuart Elden, in his article "Place Symbolism and Land Politics in Beowulf", discusses the usage of place in Beowulf. He declares, "In this text, site and place are given a range of symbolic, material, and emotive resonances." There are copious examples in Beowulf where place has significant meaning. Settings are presented as either good or bad, boundaries are set and crossed, and the placement of boundaries created conflict and exclusion. In Beowulf, there are many places that are clearly presented as good and bad, safe and unsafe. In the text, the reader learns about places that have a somewhat concrete goodness or turmoil present. Heorot Hall described in the beginning of Beowulf is one of the good places. Of the hall, it is written, "Soon it stood there, finished and ready, in full view, the hall of halls". The hall is representative of the community and the identity of the realm, as well as serving as a gathering place for the people to drink and socialize. Elden describes the hall as a place of great joy and celebration, as well as a sacred place for various ceremonies and rituals to take place (cite this and make sure proper paraphrasing). These descriptions create a sense of community and safety in the hall. In contrast, there are many places, such as Grendel's mere or the dragon's lair, that are presented in a much darker, evil light creating a bad place. The mere is described with a level of ambiguity that creates a sense of unsettlement and eeriness in the reader. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. The Physical Importance Of Outdoor Recreation Outdoor recreation, but more specifically a place attachment that can be associated with outdoor recreation, has had a huge impact on my life. Throughout my childhood, my family and I would constantly travel to many outdoor recreation locations including Myrtle Beach, Pinery Provincial Park, and St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. These places hold special meaning and an emotional bond for me, because I associate them with youthfulness and happiness. While everybody views place differently, people form emotional attachments and beliefs of these places based on different specifications. According to Williams and Stewart (1998), individuals may feel a special connection to a place based on its social or personal history, scenic beauty, or spiritual meaning (p. 22). To truly understand the meaning of place and the importance of outdoor recreation, I recently took part in four separate experiential activities at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in Waterloo, Ontario. After partaking in four outdoor experiential episodes at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, I decided to create a time capsule of my experience for people to open fifty years from now. The time capsule included post cards, photos of my experience, and a few physical components that I found represented the market well and represented the importance of outdoor–recreation. One of the physical components was a maple sugar candy to represent how maple was an important staple to Canadians, and how procuring maple syrup is an activity that can ...
