This document discusses how much of our data is generated directly from people and is doubling annually. It notes that businesses have spent $4 trillion on information technology including hardware, software, and services since 2005. Additionally, data-driven marketing added $156 billion to the US economy in 2012. However, algorithms do not understand context and the consequences of their functions. Our data doppelgangers created from personalization can alienate us. Surveillance anxiety is connected between those being surveilled and those doing the surveilling.
