Sancha de Castilla, hija de Alfonso VII, donó dinero para la construcción de un
modesto albergue a las afueras de la ciudad para dar cobijo a los peregrinos del
Camino de Santiago . En el siglo XVI, gracias a una donación del rey Fernando el
Católico, se construyó el gran edificio de estilo gótico-plateresco que se puede ver en
la actualidad. Los trabajos se alargaron hasta principios del siglo XVIII. El monasterio
se convirtió en Parador Nacional en 1964.
The origins of the Convent of Saint Marcus lie in the 12th century, when Sancha of

principal de la Orden de Santiago en
el Reino de León. En 1176, Pedro
Fernández de Castro, el primer
maestre de la Orden de Santiago fue
elegido como primer prior y fue
enterrado en su iglesia en 1176.
The building was the main residence
for the Order of Santiago in the
Kingdom of León. In 1176, Pedro
Fernandez de Castro, the first
maestre of the Order of Santiago
was elected as the first prior, and in
1184 he was buried in the church.

35. La Iglesia de San Marcos, que se
construyó en el año 1531 y se
consagró 10 años más tarde, consta
de una amplia nave cubierta con
una bóveda de crucería estrellada,
de estilo gótico tardío.

37. Durante la Guerra Civil española, las
celdas, habitaciones, establos,
claustro, iglesia, coro, museo, hasta el
último rincón fue transformado en
calabozos y oficinas de prisiones.

corner of the building were
transformed into impromptu
dungeons or jailers' offices

54. A principios del siglo XVIII, la Orden
de Santiago encargó diez lienzos

Los cuadros son bastante
homogéneos excepto dos.
At the beginning of the 18th century,
the Order of Knghts of Santiago
commissioned ten portraits to
honour their history, and some
pollitically important members of
León. The paintings are very
homogeneous, except two of them.

70. La portada principal tiene dos cuerpos
más la peineta. La puerta con un arco de
medio punto. Encima bajorrelieve de
Santiago a caballo triunfante en la
batalla de Clavijo. Encima el escudo de
armas de Santiago y los del Reino de
León.
The main cover has two bodies and the
comb. Below, the door with a
semicircular arch. On top of Santiago's
bas-relief on horseback triumphant in
the battle of Clavijo. Above, Santiago’s
coat of arms and those of the Kingdom
of León.

74. La fachada tiene casi 100 m de larga, en
un solo lienzo con dos cuerpos. En el
zócalo presenta medallones con
personajes grecolatinos o de la Historia
de España. Sobre la puerta, la estatua
de Santiago a caballo. Encima, el
escudo de armas de Santiago y de León
y sobre este, un rosetón.
The facade is almost 100 m long, in a
single body with two heights . In the
plinth there are medallions with Greco-
roman characters or of the History of
Spain. On the door, the statue of
Santiago on horseback. On top, the
coat of arms of Santiago and Leon and
above, a rosette.
