Cypherpunks in the Chambre Bleue: A Twenty-First-Century Gamified Pedagogy to Teach the Social Networks of the Seventeenth Century at the Intersection of Intellectual Culture and Political Economics Benjamin Balak (Rollins College) & Charlotte Trinquet du Lys (University of Central Florida) Presented at the North American Society for Seventeenth Century French Literature (Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, May 15-17, 2014) The goal of this article is to show how to apply avant-garde pedagogy to develop an interdisciplinary course on the seventeenth-century salon tradition within its political-economic context. We based our work on over a decade of experience teaching French culture and economic history with role-playing and strategic games, as well as using technology to reify and contextualize the zeitgeist of past eras for students who are growing up in a radically de-historicized culture. The seventeenth century is particularly challenging to teach because most of the drastic social changes over this formative era involved changes to social networks between classes, geographical locations, and institutions. Furthermore, the experiences of the major geographical areas and political powers were very diverse and led to significant redistribution of power, most notably from France to England. The processes leading to these changes are multiple, complex, multi- and inter-disciplinary, and a source of continuing argument among historians. Context is especially hard to establish since we are still living at the end of the modern era. The biologist and historian of science E. O. Wilson, following the work of the nineteenth-century philosopher William Whewell, uses the term “consilience of inductions” to describe the important creative role in science of recognizing similar patterns in different domains and finding some productive insights from these similarities. We see an opportunity to learn from the social and cultural parallels between the dawn of modernity in the seventeenth century and our own era, and we attempt to harness the current technologically-mediated social networks to our pedagogical advantage. Specifically, we present here a gamified classroom environment based on collaborative quest-based learning and assessment, intended to emphasize the similarities between the early-modern literary salons, and our own post-modern social networks.
