4. The septum separates the right and left
sides of the heart
The superior vena cava transports blood
from the head
The inferior vena cava transports the
blood from the rest of the body
5. RIGHT
The right atrium collects deoxygenated
blood, and pumps it to the right ventricle
The pulmonary artery carries
deoxygenated blood from the right
ventricle to the lungs (only artery
carrying deoxygenated)
6. LEFT
The pulmonary vein carries oxygenated
blood from the lungs to the left atrium
(only vein carrying oxygenated)
The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood
to the body via the aorta
7. The left ventricle has a thicker
muscle, the right is smaller because
it is only pumping to the lungs
8. VALVES
Atria-ventricular valves prevent backflow of
blood into the atria when ventricles
contract
Right atrium=tricuspid valve
Left atrium=bicuspid valve
Semi-lunar valve prevent backflow of blood
from the arteries into the ventricles
