5. Aims of clinical training
To develop a competent primary care physician with
appropriate - Knowledge, Skill and Attitude to treat
common surgical diseases at the primary care level.
To diagnose, workup and proper referral of common
surgical conditions.

8. Objectives of Clinical training
At the end of clinical posting in surgery, a student should be able to
Elicit a detailed & relevant history
Carry out a thorough physical examination
Identify patient’s problems
Reach a differential diagnosis
Formulate appropriate investigations
Interpret the results of investigations
Plan appropriate management
Undertake some aspects of management
9. Teaching/learning methods
The following strategies are used for organizing teaching learning
activities:
a) Bedside small group teaching Mini CEX, DOPS,WPBA
b) Skill labs
c) Problem based learning/ Case scenario based learning
d) Task based learning/ SDL
e) Portfolio- case encounters and reflections
f) Line drawings/ Workshops
g) Clinical correlation class/ applied basic sciences
h) Didactic lectures/ Flip class
i) E-Learning – Moodle/ Medscape etc
10. Guidelines on clinical postings
a.Dress Code and Punctuality – All students will adhere to dress code
while in wards and clinics.
b. Students are required to have 90% attendance, barring exceptional
circumstances.
c. All students are expected to be present in their areas of posting by 8.00
a.m. Latecomers to academic activities will not be permitted to enter the
sessions and will be marked absent.
d. No student is to bring backpacks, bags etc to the wards
11. Guidelines on clinical postings
e. Students will clerk cases in their assigned beds and choose the cases for
formal presentation to the faculty.
f. No student is allowed to look at the patient’s case record except with the
permission of the faculty.
g. Students should endeavour to present at least 2 cases in every session.
h. Students should present cases by turn so that every student gets an equal
chance to present.
i. Students should be familiar with the patients in their assigned beds.
j. Bed assignment and case presenter will be chosen by the students
themselves.
k. The group leaders have the responsibility of making sure that studends in
their group are assigned beds

l. Each student gets a chance to present
m. Discipline is maintained in the group.
n. All relevant information regarding the posting, examination etc will
be disseminated to the whole group by the academic calendar
o. Maintain daily attendance and group daily activity records.
p. Not more than 5 students to clerk a case
13. Assessment of Clinical training
EOP End of posting clinical exam ( 1 long case).
