Sikkim became the first 100% organic state in India in January 2016, banning synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to make agriculture more environmentally friendly and provide safer food. As a result, Sikkim received the United Nations' FAO Future Policy Gold Award in recognition of setting a global example as the first fully organic state in the world. The award recognized Sikkim's achievement in beating 51 other nominations.

12. WHY ORGANIC FARMING?

state. Today, all farming in Sikkim is carried out without the use of
