• Dec 4th 2010
• In the 1930’s Vannever Bush introduced the
  idea of the Memex
• In 1968 Doug Engelbart and folks from
SRI present the “Mother of all Demo’s”
  to “Augment Human Capabilities”.
• They also introduce the idea of the
  mouse.
• In 1975 a 200+ person team at Parc invent
  the GUI.
• This included several former SRI employees
• Steve Jobs thought this was a good idea
• Then in 1990 Tim Berners Lee invented the
  world wide web.
• We continue to riff on these modalities.
The reign of the GUI
• About a decade for most of us
• Norman Neilson Group is a benchmark
• Universities produce UX expertise
• UI design is seen as paramount
• Experience Design and GUI design conflate
Enabled a generation
• we are all always on always available
• the ability to produce large amounts of text
• the ability to produce large volumes of work
• computer languages are an expected literacy
but there are
 drawbacks
Harms our bodies
Separates ‘work’ from ‘play’
A schism which means we fully honor neither.
Who will invent the
next UI revolution?
By 2020 the keyboard and
  mouse may be history
Universities may specialize
  in Experience Design
Students may specialize
in the bio mechanics of
    gesture driven UI
Work may look more
    like dance
Full body patterns may
    inform the next
     generation UI
     performant public and visible gestures
gestures selected for form as well as function

                 sign language
                     dance
                  taekwondo
                    capoeira
                     tai chi
                contact improv
                    parkour
What will the gesture
       stack be?
grabbing, clapping hands, sweeping arms, swimming
motions, rock paper scissors, waving hello or goodbye,
air marshalling, fist bump, thumbs up, bowing, genuflect,
               handshake, salute, gang signs

move things, stretch, copy, cut and paste, zoom in,
                    stretch, stack

connect objects, wire inputs to outputs, aesthetically
           arrange code in shared space,
Thank you
