and his gang…
• Soon, Andy also becomes popular with the
prison guards, including the vicious Captain
Hadley who offers him protection against the

counselling…

setting which a viewer will notice immediately…
• Guards are not often shot personally and it helps them
remain as guards…
• The scenes that are inside the prison are very dark as
they make the viewer feel like they too are apart in the
prison with the characters…
• Some shots during the roof scene are spectacular…
• The aesthetic and purposeful normality of things
really adds to the atmosphere…

26. Theme : Hope
Hope is set against its opposite
despair. Most of the inmates are
afraid of hope because they think it
will destroy them. In contrast Andy
didn’t give up hope. He believes
hope gives people a reason to
live, a sense of freedom.
He not only maintains hope himself
but tries to give others the hope
that life can and will get
better, even in prison.
