Introduction
Native Americans have existed for thousands of years, developing a rich heritage that characterizes
the value of the group. Today it is estimated that there are more than 2.5 million Native Americans
living in the United–States and this population is steadily growing. Although they account for only 1
percent of the total U.S. population, they have been described as including 50 percent of the
diversity that exists in this country. This diversity among Native American nations is illustrated by
250 languages and more than 500 tribes. One of these tribes is called the Cherokee Indians and this
research paper is going to deal with them. Cherokee were probably the most acculturated Indians in
the nineteenth century. They were one of the first Indian groups to successfully transform their
aboriginal landscape into a new cultural landscape that sometimes surpassed their white frontier
neighbors. They had a lots of powerful traditions focusing on the tribe first, the clan second, and the
family third in terms of importance and duty. The family was the centrality of the circle and the
individual was traditionally simply not allowed to upset the order of the family. Traditional beliefs

American History Reflection
Before I took this class, American History, my childhood was influenced by movies and books about
Cavalry and Indians. My young mind developed a likeness to the Cavalry on horseback. It was
impressive to look at that I wanted to be one of them. Needless to say, I am pro–Cavalry. To me they
represent strength, gallantry, and savior of the oppressed.
The film, Trail of Tears, and the lecture taught me a different side of the US Cavalry. My thought of
them as defender for those who cannot defend themselves became blurry. Maybe, as soldiers, who
sworn an oath to obey the President of the United State, they were following orders. For my
personal reflection, it is unbelievable that American history included "death march" and "ethnic
cleansing." It is difficult to fathom that these events occurred America fought the British and drove
them away. I was assuming that the unification of American citizens would follow the revolutionary
war. But, when the Cherokee Indians were forced to their lands in Georgia and march towards west
of Mississippi, with soldiers and rifles aimed at them, it was a disturbing scenario to me. It was even
called the "death march," perhaps because a quarter of the Cherokee Indians perished during the
march, in which many were elderly and children. The question that came into my mind was, why
did President Andrew Jackson picked the winter months to force the Cherokee Indians to move. He

The Cherokee Indians have lived on the North American continent far longer than anyone of British
decent. Yet they were removed in a brutal manner from their homeland, on which they have lived for
countless centuries. This journey of removal is called the Trail of Tears, which had a horrendous
effect on the Cherokees.
In 1791, the United States began negotiations with the Cherokee nation. However, Americans began
moving onto Cherokee land and forcing them away due to want/need of land for farming and other
purposes. This began a series of events that led to their removal. In 1828 the state of Georgia passed
a law that stated, "as of June 1, 1830 the Cherokee Nation would be null and void, it would no
longer be seen as a nation to the state of Georgia."
During the nineteenth century as many as one hundred thousand Natives were forcefully moved
westward. Those removed came from five different tribes. These were the Cherokee, Chickasaw,
Choctaw, Creek, and the Seminoles who were forced to move during the decade of the Indian
Removal Act of 1830.The tribe that was most affected by this was the Cherokee was a tribe that who
experienced one of the most horrific removals in our nation's history. The Cherokee stated, "The
Cherokee removal was named Nunna dual Tsung (Trail Where They Cried)." Although to us it is

John Ehle. Trail of Tears was published in the United States by Anchor Books, a division of random
house, New York and in Canada. This book was published in September 22, 1989. This book has
424 pages.
John Ehle is more than qualified to write on this subject. He has wrote over seventeen books, his
first book was published in 1957 so he has over 30 years of experience to write this book. He has
had two books adapted into a film, The Winter People and The Journey of August King. He has 11
books of fiction and 6 books of non–fiction mostly involving subjects of the Civil Rights struggle,

There are fourteen chapters in Ehle's book. This book is written more like a novel than like
academic history. This book was created in chronological order. The book was told as a story, which
helped keep it interesting. There were maps of the Trail of Tears and charts of the counts of rise and
falls of the Cherokee nation. The maps are very helpful if you don't know exactly where this
happened at. Also it gave you an idea of how many deaths and births happened in that time. I think
that the thesis of this book could be, "When the Cherokee woman lay down to bear a baby, she did
not know that the child she was about to deliver was to be a leader, a chief among his people."
Which is referring to John Ridge, the son of Major Ridge.
The author accomplishes his goal by collecting as much information as he can before he writes. For
instance, Ehle includes a good set of sources, such as letter, journal excerpts, military orders, and so
and so forth. There are a total of 5 pages of sources. The author wasn't overwhelmed with masses of
data; he relied on a logical development of his ideas.
In order for the author to write this book he must have had to do a lot of research before writing. As
stated before, he has a lot of good sources. I thought the book was interesting but I wouldn't
recommend it to someone that has never heard of the Trail of Tears or the Cherokee removal.

As we made our way further south, crossing over in to Georgia, we were greeted by droves of cars
parked along the sides of the roads. People were enjoying the simple pleasure of whitewater rafting.
However, when you are the one pulling a 35 ft RV maneuvering through those hair pin turns, trying
to avoid the cars on both sides of the road, it doesn't seem like a pleasure; at least for the moment.
Then, in the middle of dodging the cars on the side of the road, a van stopped right in front of us. No
kidding, the van stopped in the middle of the lane on a blind curve to let their little boy go to the
bathroom. However, as you can well image, there are no bathrooms! Seriously, traffic came to a
complete halt in the Chattahoochee River National Park. We had to shake our head and laugh at that
