An analysis was conducted to compare trip times for diesel, electric locomotive, and electric multiple unit (EMU) trains on the Caltrain corridor from San Jose to San Francisco. The electric locomotive provided minimal time savings over the diesel locomotive, while the EMU had significantly faster trip times - over 13 minutes faster than the diesel in one scenario. This is because the EMU's higher power-to-weight ratio and adhesion factor allows it to utilize its power more effectively compared to the electric locomotive. The analysis demonstrates that EMU is the best technology choice for Caltrain to maximize time savings.
