Leaders are using AI to
transform not just how
businesses do work, but
what work they actually do.
The true potential of AI doesn’t come from automation alone,
but from how it can become a symbiotic part of the workflow,
enhancing—not replacing—the output of people.

Human and AI systems work better by
reimagining what’s possible together.
Volkswagen (VW) and Autodesk reimagined the
VW Microbus with generative design.
VW decided to reconceptualize their
Microbus, andpartnered with Autodesk to
experiment with generative design tools.
These tools enabled a collaborative
partnership between human and
machine. The humans set cleaner and
greener design requirements, and the
machine generated ideas that fit those
constraints. From there, the parties
continued to iterate, with the machine
generating ideas and human co-
workers curating and refining them.
With this approach, VW created
lighter parts and reduced the time
from development to manufacturing
from 1.5 years to just months.
The designers credited generative
design and their AI collaboration
with creating structures they could
never have created on their own.

Fostering human-machine
collaboration requires
contextual comprehension
between people and machines.
8. 8
For humans to understand machines,
they need explanations that can be
understood and trusted.
TD Bank is using AI to help approve or deny
loans, and introduced a tool that explains
the reasoning behind their AI's decisions.
As algorithms assume more responsibility,
this kind of explainability will help
employees trust new AI systems as their
decision-making partners. This will
also help them establish trust with
customers and demonstrate ethical-
decision-making processes to regulators.
And machines need to comprehend
what they are sensing in a more
human way to extend collaboration.
Technology advances are allowing AI systems
to better understand natural language in
context, similar to the way humans learn
reading comprehension in school. And this
growing comprehension isn’t limited to
language. Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 mixed reality
headset uses image recognition and machine
learning to identify objects and understand
what they are: for instance, that a couch is not
just a series of pixels, but something that can
be sat on and belongs in a living room.

tools. Using backend machine
learning models, data streaming
pipelines, microservices and more,

AI shouldn’t be seen as a
solution for one challenge,
but a transformative factor
for the entire organization.
Lemonadeisexploringanewapproachtoinsurance,usinganAI-first
model. The company infused AI across their workflows from onboarding
customers, to policy changes, to internal engineering team development,
to their claims process. Their claims process utilizes an intelligent agent
and anti-fraud algorithms to immediately pay out simple claims to
customers. For claims requiring further investigation, the intelligent
agent gathers relevant contextual information and then introduces the
customer to a human specialist. But the company's approach doesn't just
offer a collaborative AI partner to their customers and employees, it also
means that each new system change could introduce a new way to
transform their business with AI.

⎮ Determine the role that AI is playing in
your business alongside your existing
workforce. Think beyond which tasks
could be replaced and imagine how you
can build a new kind of workforce with
humans and AI collaborating side by side.
⎮ Determine what tools are available internally
to introduce the AI solutions needed to move
your organization in this direction. If none are
available, evaluate if employees have the skills
to build the solutions, or engage partners
to generate the necessary capabilities.
Is your company thinking collaboratively?

15
⎮ Evaluate where your
industry is headed.
Where are partners
or competitors finding
success in deploying AI?
⎮ To ensure transparency
and trust, gather workforce
perspectives into the design
and implementation of AI
systems. Ultimately, these
employees will be the ones
who determine the success
of your AI investments.
⎮ If you’re not already using
AI in the company, find an area
to begin piloting the technology,
such as co-designing a new
product, coaching or training
employees or reinventing
customer engagement strategies.
How will you roll out collaborative AI
initiatives acrossthe organization?

⎮ Evaluate the scope of decision-making that AI is
being given in your organization. Identify sensitive
areas where additional oversight may be needed
and prioritize post-implementation explainability
solutions, such as counterfactual explanations,
for those systems.
⎮ For all future AI projects, plan for
explainability by design. Develop
policies and principles that will
guide the development, building and
implementation of new AI systems.
How will you address explainability?
