What is Facebook?
Facebook is a social networking site that allows people to connect with their network (e.g., family,
friends, co-workers) and create new networks (e.g., with people with similar interests). Many public
figures and organizations have fan pages, allowing thousands of Facebook users to interact with them.
Users create a profile page that shows their friends and networks information about themselves. The
choice to include a profile in a network means that everyone within that network can view the profile. The
profile typically includes the following: Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos,
Notes, Groups, and The Wall.
Benefits
Personal
Users are able to search for friends and acquaintances by e-mail address, school, university, or just by
typing in a name or location for search. When people become “friends” on Facebook, they are able to
see all of each others' friends and connections. This provides a great tool to get back in touch with
friends and school colleagues.
Groups can be created by users. These can include anything from grade school connections to hobbies
and interests. Groups can be public and available to everyone or private, meaning only those invited can
join and view discussions. Similarly, the Events feature allows friends to organize parties, concerts, and
other get togethers in the real world. Users can also become fans of everything such as people,
organizations, television shows, movies, and musicians.
Professional/Business
From a business perspective, these are the benefits of Bioness having a Facebook presence and why
we need to support such efforts:
• BRAND AWARENESS: Brand awareness is a vital element of marketing and is used to measure
our client’s knowledge of your business and the benefits of our products.
• REPUTATION MANAGEMENT: Having a Facebook account not only allows us to “speak
directly” to your customers but it also allows us to see what they think of us, our business and
may offer suggestions for improvement.
• BUSINESS HUMANIZATION: Put a face, or many faces, to our business. This will allow our
current and future customers to see us and know exactly who they’re dealing with.
• CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT: Allows us to engage and invite customers to our business with a
variety of marketing initiatives—promotions, and building awareness of events and information
that may be of interest to them.

• CUSTOMER FEEDBACK: Facebook is a comfortable and user friendly platform that people are
happy to use which is why it is a great way to get customer feedback on elements of our
business. We can use our Wall to ask questions and see what responses you get. It also gives us
the opportunity to speak directly to customers about any of their comments.
• ACQUISITION OF NEW CUSTOMERS: Find consumers who we may never have had contact
with previously. Facebook has the ability to open up a new world of customers.
• DRIVE WEB TRAFFIC: By including a link to our website on our Facebook page, we are
encouraging fans, friends or interested parties to visit our website, therefore increasing your web
traffic— the more people to your website the better chance to convert them to a customer.
• VIRAL MARKETING: Viral marketing is word of mouth on warp speed. Once we get to a certain
level of following, our marketing initiatives may have the opportunity to “go viral”.

Finding and Adding Friends
Once you have created an account, you will want to add friends. You can do this in three different ways:
• Search for friends or acquaintances who are already on Facebook. You can enter their name into
the search bar.
• Invite friends or acquaintances who are not yet on Facebook
• Search for Facebook users with similar interests to yours.
To find friends, you can type in a name in the “Search” window or Select the “Find Friends” button on the
top bar.
To add someone as a friend, click on the “Add Friend” button in the search results page
or click on the “Add Friend” button on their Facebook profile page.
When sending friend requests, always add a personal message.
A friend request will be sent to the user – you will receive confirmation if they accept your request.
Please note: once you add someone as a friend, they will be able to view any information you have
allowed to be accessible to friends – including your photographs. See below for important information
about Facebook’s privacy settings.
Joining Fan Pages and Groups
As well as adding friends, you can also join fan pages and groups. Fan pages may belong to politicians,
businesses, organizations or celebrities. Groups may be created for reasons such as sharing a common
trait or expressing an opinion on a particular topic or item. You should be aware that other Facebook
users will be able to see your list of Fan and Group pages.

Status Updates
You can use status updates to let people know what you are doing, what you are planning, what you are
thinking, or share interesting information with them.
Privacy Settings
Take the time to go through the many privacy settings options. This is an important step, as it is very
easy to inadvertently reveal more information than you might expect. Use the “How others see you” tool
as a way to check how your privacy settings are working.
You can divide your friends into different groups – you may have separate ‘Family’, ‘Childhood Friends’
and ‘Colleagues’ lists, etc. You can give specific access to (or take access away from) the different lists
you create. For example, you may allow all friends access to your photos with the exception of those on
your ‘Family’ and ‘Colleagues’ lists.
To create groups,
You can select the “More” link in the “Groups” listing. Also, Facebook will create preliminary groups for you based
on the information you enter in your profile.
