Situated on the banks of the River Liffey outside
Celbridge, Donaghcomper House, Co. Kildare,
was originally named Rockfield and occupied by
the Pakenham family. In 1835 it was enlarged
and remodelled in Tudor Revival style for William
Kirkpatrick, with a lofty hall, drawing room that ran
the full depth of the house, beautiful library, and
formal garden with attractive views.
In the 20th century it was the home of Sir Ivone
Kirkpatrick, a career diplomat, whose judgements
significantly influenced events before, during,
and after the Second World War. Hard-working,
forthright, perceptive and a skilful networker,
Kirkpatrick vigorously opposed the pre-war policy
of appeasing the Fascist dictators. As one of the
three de facto rulers of post-war Germany in 1950-
53, he successfully negotiated the end of the
Allied occupation, and warned of the aggressively
expansionist policy of Soviet Russia. However,
his bluntness was not always appreciated by his
colleagues and superiors, who may also have
resented the fact that he was Irish and Catholic, and
his reputation among historians has suffered from
his support of the use of force for the recovery of the
Suez Canal in 1956.
After his death in 1964 Donaghcomper was sold to the
wealthy American businessman and philanthropist
J. Bruce Bredin and his wife Octavia du Pont. In
1977 they resold it to Brendan McGonnell, who
established an equestrian centre there. In 2007 the
house was used in the making of Becoming Jane, a
film on the early life of Jane Austen.
Ian Kay Muir (nicknamed “Kim” from his initials)
was born in 1916 into a sporting family: his father,
Matthew William Muir (youngest son of Sir John
Muir of Deanston in Perthshire, Baronet) was a well-
known polo player and the second member of his
family to be Master of the Cotswold Hunt. He had an
elder sister Gillian, to whom he was deeply attached.
In 1917 his parents purchased the beautiful, mainly
Jacobean mansion of Postlip Hall near Winchcombe
in Gloucestershire.
By the time he was eight Kim was already riding a
pony and was a keen follower of the hunt. In the
following year his father was killed by a fall from
his horse in the hunting field. This tragic loss at an
impressionable age may have been a cause of the
frenetic energy with which he lived his short life.
Kim inherited Postlip Hall, though he could not take
control of it until he reached the age of 21. In 1925
his mother remarried, and Kim’s stepfather, Captain
David Mitchell of the 60th Rifles, further encouraged
his sporting interests.
Kim was educated at Eton and Sandhurst and was
then commissioned in the 10th Royal Hussars. By
the age of fourteen he was already interested in
hawks and falcons, and falconry became his main
passion, though he was still very active in foxhunting,
steeplechasing and polo. He was a member of
the British Falconers’ Club and his name appears
frequently in their records and in the journals of
fellow enthusiasts. He flew mainly Peregrines and
Merlins, and was the owner and trainer of the famous
Black Jess, whose portrait was painted by the great
bird illustrator George Edward Lodge and features as
the frontispiece to his autobiography. A collection of
Lodge's paintings are included in this sale.
In 1939 Kim was stationed at Tidworth as a map
instructor. On the outbreak of war his regiment
formed part of the British Expeditionary Force.
Before leaving England Kim fulfilled his ambition of
taking part in the Grand National, his horse Away
being placed eighth.
Five days later he left for the battlefields of France.
On 27 May 1940, having escaped from his blazing
tank while supporting his badly wounded sergeant,
he was shot dead by a German sniper, at just 24
years of age.
Kim’s sister Gillian married Evan Morgan Williams
and lived at Ballyvolane Stud, Bruff, Co. Limerick.

1922 Irish Republican Silver An extremely rare small Salver of Irish
Republican Silver by William Egan, Cork 1922, struck on the underside
with a two masted ship, and a single towered castle, and the makers
mark W.E., decorated in the Georgian style with shell border on a pie
crust rim, with three ball n’claw feet, approx. 14 ozs, 22cms (8 3/4’’)
diameter. * Extremely Rare, One of only fifty-four such pieces made
by Egans, Cork, during the period July to September 1922. It was
impossible for silversmith to send their wares to Dublin during this
time to be assayed as communications had been cut off and trade
had collapsed during The Troubles. On the suggestion of Dr. Oliver St.
J. Gogarty, Egan kept on his staff and started stamping his silver wares
with a Cork Republican mark, which in time might become as rare as
Cromwellian silver. Egan’s punch mark of a Ship, had two masts, unlike
the similar antique mark, which had three masts. In fine condition. (1)
