If you are like many people, even the thought of delivering a speech in front of an audience will get your palms sweating. The fear of public speaking ranks high among the most common phobias, and for good reason: most of us approach the situation with the wrong mindset, which in turn makes us live out our worst fears in a public forum. As Michael Parker notes in IT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAY: How to Sell Your Message When It Matters Most (A TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale January 2016), our fixation on the content of our words – and not the presentation of ourselves – is what brings us down. Once the Vice-Chairman of London’s Saatchi & Saatchi, and one of the world’s most experienced advertising pitch men, having made more than 1,000 pitches in his successful career, Parker has learned first-hand that an effective presentation, a job interview, or even a speech at a wedding hinges on our ability to portray ourselves as passionate, relatable, and collected. But, if we are focused on what we say, and not how we act, we will fail to persuade our audience. Applied in the boardroom, at the pulpit, or even in conversation, these tenets will help you present better in any situation.

People love the notion of the sole innovator, but this notion is wrong. Successful companies are usually started, and become successful, with the contributions of at least two people. Yin and yang, maker and seller, dreamer and pragmatist — call it what you will. After the fact, people may recognize one founder as the innovator, but it takes a team to make a new venture work. Derek Sivers, the co-founder of CD Baby, said it best: “The first follower is what transforms the lone nut into a leader.” In some instances the first follower is the first customer, but most often the first follower is the second employee of a company — that is, the co-founder. There are few factors that can make a company more successful, fun, and epic than an awesome co-founder. There are few factors that can make a company more unsuccessful, aggravating, and pathetic than an incompetent, lazy, or dishonest co-founder. This SlideShare explains the art of the picking a co-founder and is part of the LinkedIn Influencer series for #mystartupstory. Photo credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jrmllvr/

Building an enduring, multi-billion dollar consumer technology company is hard. As an investor, knowing which startups have the potential to be massive and long-lasting is also hard. From both perspectives, identifying companies with this potential is a combination of “art” and “science” — the art is understanding how products work, and the science is knowing how to measure it. At the earliest stages of a company, it comes down to understanding how a product is built to maximize and leverage user engagement. In this presentation, Sarah Tavel shares her "Hierarchy of Engagement" framework she uses to evaluate non-transactional consumer companies she is looking to invest in.

Some think working remotely is a terrible setting that takes control away and let's employees stay at home and be useless. Others find that remote work increases overall productivity and lowers the need to micromanage. And both sides might be correct as remote work, like all other structures, work really well for some and make others crazy. The only thing that we can say for certain is that telecommuting is increasingly popular and there are problems you need to face to make it work.

There’s more to employee wellness than what management perceives it to be. For example, the actual “way we work.” Here at Officevibe we think the way that we work is becoming a bit outdated. We are facing a heavier “mental” workload, that typically requires us to be in front of a computer from the morning to the evening. Not to mention the fact that we are living in a generation where management demands expedience for every task; This is messing up employee health, employee wellness (both physical and mental), and employee morale. The mental fatigue that we face is worsened by the fact that we’re sitting down all day and we barely move around. So, we have compiled a list of stretches that will ease the tension and help you function better and become a little healthier. In 1934 the Academy Awards introduced a new category: Film Editing, awarding an Oscar to Conrad A. Nervig for his work on the movie Eskimo. Often called “the invisible art,” editing has made movies possible since they first began, but the field still struggles to gain the appreciation from the general public that it deserves. Not us. We've always been big fans. To celebrate the art of editing, we’ve put together a quick visual timeline spanning 125 years.

globalization is undermining nation states. First, it is that it is empowering corporations at the expense of the nation state, and secondly, that the international institutions such It does not make sense to talk of a world of 6 billion people becoming a monoculture. The spread of globalization will undoubtedly bring changes to the countries it reaches, but change is an essential part of life. It does not mean the abolition of traditional values. As the WTO and World Bank are not democratic…. There is an issue of sheer size. It is noted that many corporations are larger than nation states – more than half the 100 largest economies in the world are corporations. Integration in the world economy contributes to environmental improvements by promoting growth, increasing incomes, improving property rights and the allowing the efficient use of resources.

Growth and innovation are the lifeblood of any startup. However the systems, processes, and infrastructure necessary for growth often end up killing innovation. Innovators in these fast growing companies must make a critical choice: Align with the rest of the organization and get the benefits of scale, or remain autonomous and go it alone. Hootsuite has raised more than $200 Million and grown to almost 1000 people in 6 years. As head of both Corporate Development and Hootsuite’s Innovation Lab, Matt Switzer is no stranger to managing this delicate balance. Matt will speak candidly about the challenges and opportunities of leading an innovation team within a high-growth startup.

Frustration is born when our expectation doesn't match our experience. But what happens when God is at the center of our expectation - and He doesn't come through? When our prayers seem to fall flat. When it seems like the God who loves us didn't provide for us in the way we had hoped. But God doesn't share our perspective. And His plans won't always match up with our plans. And in part 2 of our conversation The Expectation Gap, we explore the story of Lazurus, an learn how to realign our expectations with a new perspective on who God really is. The Church, as in the hundreds of millions of people who profess Christ, is probably the world’s most powerful “content distribution network”, but they are often held back by fear - sometimes legitimate fear of physical repercussions, but increasingly social fear of rejection. How do we help digital natives (especially young people) feel comfortable sharing the gospel online?

It’s part of our daily lives, of who we are and how we live, move, work - a pretty broad category. And it’s the kind of sector that can easily be termed “slow.” Slow in adapting to new technology, slow in responsiveness to customers…. Some people think having a spreadsheet is already a win

By Dimitri Farber (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimitrifarber/), cofounder at Tiller Systems (https://www.tillersystems.com/en/) Since Dimitri, Vincent & Josef founded Tiller, many things have changed: new products, new offices, a company acquisition & even the launch of an incubator for restaurateurs. When people talk about them, they are still described as a cash register solution, just like back on the first day. And yet, Tiller is much more than that. They now define themselves as an ecosystem that brings together cash registration + delivery + reservation + pre-order + analysis + integrations. They are not only addressing shopkeepers, but also passionate local entrepreneurs.

Accounting changed the world forever both when it was “invented” in Mesopotamia & when it became a double-entry system 500 years ago. Today, the profession of accountant & the practice itself are again undergoing major revolutions - revolutions that startups are initiating ⏱️ Looking at what is currently happening in the accounting world, we may automatically think that the profession of “accountant” is dying: The number of accountants has decreased by 25% in just the last 15 years. This “threat” is enabled by new technologies that are shifting everything within the space. Cloud, AI, blockchain & data are changing the game. But total automation is still very far away. And obviously, in such an ancient & symbolic sector, the opportunities are infinite. And we have a few examples of startups who are ready to seize them!
