• In-text (in-line) citation acknowledges your
source in the main body of your document.
Example: (Carol 19)
• Reference is the details of a particular in-text
citation.
Example: Carol, Gilligan. In a Different Voice. Harvard,
1982.
• Works Cited is the list of references arranged
alphabetically.

We should not forget that the Migration series made a big impact when it was
first exhibited in 1941. It was part of the first major exhibit of African
American art in a downtown New York gallery (Phillips 162). Part of his
series was published in Fortune magazine, and Lawrence sold the series in
halves to two major museums before it went on a national tour (163).

15. ●Citing a direct quotation
When directly quoting a source, place the in-text
citation (parenthetical citation) after the quote.
Example:
Sanders explains that economic woes are due to
“the mortgage crisis and poor risk assessment
(20).”
16. Citing a long quote
The use of nuclear weapons in today’s society
is strikingly alarming. Though the United States
is the only country to employ it in the past, they
are at the same time the country that condemns
its use the most. While this may seem
hypocritical, is it the most proper action for the
United States to make as the global leader. (19)

Scientists have warned that the use of nuclear weapons pose the single
biggest threat to the Earth's peace and environment. According to

18. Citing a Table
• Refer to the table and its corresponding
numeral in-text. Do not capitalize the
word table. This is typically done in
parentheses e.g. (see table 1)
• Label: 'Table' and provide its
corresponding Arabic numeral. No
punctuation after the label and number.
• On the next line, provide a caption for the
table, most often the table title. Use title
case.
• Below the title, "Source:" then provide
the correct MLA bibliographic information
for the source in note form. Use hanging
indent. If you provide source information
with your illustrations, you do not need to
provide this information on the Works
Cited page.

19. Citing a Figure
• All visuals (maps, diagrams,
charts, videos, podcasts, etc.)
are labelled as Figure or Fig.
• Refer to the Figure and its
corresponding numeral in-text.
Do not capitalize the word
figure. This is typically done in
parentheses e.g. (see fig. 1)
• If you provide source
information with your
illustrations, you do not need
to provide this information on
the Works Cited page.
