3. Title Page Contains ONLY
Title
Not same as RQ or phrased as a question
Research question
Phrased as a question
Subject for which the essay is registered
if language essay also state which category it
falls into
word count

4. Contents page
 Must be at beginning
 All pages numbered
 An index should not be included and is ignored if
present

5. Introduction
 Tell the reader what to expect
Focus of the essay
Scope of the research
Indication of the sources to be used
Insight into the line of argument to be taken
 Sometimes advisable to finalize the introduction once
the body of the essay is complete

6. Body of Essay
Research
Analysis
Discussion
Evaluation
Appendices and foot/endnotes are ignored and
should not contain important information
Appropriate to subject

7. Conclusion
Final, summative, & at the end of the essay
What has been achieved
Notes of any limitations
Unresolved questions
Must relate to the research question posed

8. References and Bibliography
 Use consistent, standard style
 ie- Alphabetical or order of citation depending on style
 Only include what is cited within the essay
 IB minimum standard

 date of publication
 title of source
 page numbers (print sources only)
 date of access (electronic sources only)
