Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance (Safeco) April 2010 – present
Safeco Casualty Claims Specialist- ComplexUnit (June 2014 - present)
Managed a caseload of complex bodily injury claims, the majority of which were in
different stages of litigation (CT). This work involved creating action plans to monitor
necessary tasks associated with each claim; identifying coverage issues, comparative
negligence, potential fraud, etc. This involved daily interactions and/or negotiations with
attorneys (both plaintiff and defense), insureds, and other related parties. Several reserves
exceeded $100,000.00 in risk assessment. Additionally, I drafted complex bodily injury
evaluations, identifying unrelated medical conditions as well as incorporating
comparative negligence into the final product. Ultimately, seeking out critical issues as
well as seizing upon settlement opportunities in an effort to negotiate/resolve each claim
for an accurate amount.
As the only complex adjuster working in the Keene, NH office, I acted as a resource and
mentor to the less tenured adjusters. My presence provided others with the ability to
utilize me as a guide to assist them in their claims handling. Often times, discussions
centered around strategy, weighing pros/cons of different decisions, complex litigation,
and making decision which would align with the corporate quality standards. While I was
able to offer my skills/expertise to them, in exchange, I was able to enhance my
communication skills, as often times I would deliver meaningful constructive criticism.
Attended trials, mediations, pre-trial conferences (when dictated by jurisdiction) and
monitored all legal aspects of claim including ensuring that scheduling order deadlines
were complied with.
Safeco Casualty Claims Auditor (April 2013 - June 2014)
Participated in periodic litigation audits in an effort to identify 1) Issues relating to
standard work process implementation and, 2) Reviewing legal billing for
appropriateness and/or reasonableness.
Reviewed approximately fifty claim files per month, scrutinizing for compliance with
proper claims handling processes and recommendations, files ranged in complexity
across all claims levels.
2. Participated in monthly quality assurance Lunch and Learn sessions and developed a
presentation focused on the compliance aspect of auditing files- audience exceeded one
hundred auditors from around the country.
Participated in periodic calibration sessions with y team in an effort to ensure that the we
were aligned in our review of files.
Assisted the Northeast Region in monthly diagnostic events by completing first and
second reviews of files and offering feedback and guidance as needed.
As an arbitrator, through Arbitration Forums (AF), reviewed liability disputes between
carriers and rendered a liability decision after a thorough analysis of the available
evidence, then conveying the decision in a clear and concise manner in accordance with
specific AF guidelines.
Safeco Casualty Claims Adjuster (April 2010 - April 2013)
Able to effectively manage and organize a full caseload of claims in different stages,
ranging from brand new claims through settlement.
Consistently evaluated each claim with a critical eye in an effort to identify relevant
issues which needed attention in order to treat each claim with the utmost efficiency.
Chosen to act as mentor/trainer to new hires; this involved communicating claims
handling guidelines, claims best practices, and general claims handling techniques in
addition to being available for questions and concerns as needed.
Always maintaining a position in the top tier with regard to goals and objectives.
Hand selected to participate in the NSM Steering Committee; my primary objective as a
member of this committee was to identify areas of opportunity within the claims
processes and develop and implement strategies to make the processes more efficient,
streamlined and effective while maintaining the goal of increasing production and
quality.
Enhanced communication/negotiation skills; able to adjust communication tactics and
styles depending on the relationship with the other party (attorney, insured or claimant)
and tactfully convey the appropriate information and resolve issues without the need for
additional support from my manager. This included resolving office of the President
complaints and other unique circumstances which arose periodically.
