THE COST OF
HEALTHCARE
Most of the countries across the globe are facing a
formidable challenge to manage the rapidly
increasing cost of health care
Although spending rose by just an estimated 1.9
percent in 2012, it is expected to pick up again, with
total spending rising by 2.6 percent in nominal terms
in 2013 and by an annual average of 5.3 percent
until 2017. Given population growth, this means that
spending per head is anticipated to rise by an
average of 4.4 percent a year from 2014-2017
Lifestyle-related illness combined with an ageing
world population are increasingly putting health care
budgets under pressure
The economic cost of lifestyle related disease is
accelerating and will cost the world economy $ 47
trillion in 2030

Dusk was designed for seniors and their
families. The 2-part system includes a
health monitoring band that monitors the
wearer’s vitals, reporting stats to family
and alerting paramedics in the event of
an emergency. Also, it has a real-time
video & photo sharing function.
Doctor on Demand will randomly pair

3.B VISIONING
42
A Continued push towards Healthcare Do It Yourself (as a Family). Any available
efficiency improvements in healthcare will be aggressively pursued, pushing care where
possible to the patient. The commitment to take care of each other will feel meaningful and
fulfilling for families and communities (and also need support).
Regulatory measures to penalize bad food and behavior. Consumption and lifestyle
related healthcare problems and associated costs will become increasingly significant and
visible. This will result in government interventions to start taxing unhealthy food, e.g. sugar,
and penalizing unhealthy life style habits, e.g. smoking and physical inactivity.
Explosion of new services, solutions and policies resulting from highly specialized
data-driven software applications. The internet and mobile communications will provide
unparalleled opportunity for tracking, analyzing, interpreting and sharing healthcare
information. This will inform people, physicians, hospitals, employers, public infrastructure
providers, policy makers, and help them make better choices.

Health maintenance products and services professionalizing. For aging people (totally
different from youth) maintaining health and staying fit is a number one priority, but one that
often requires deeply engrained changes in behavior. With the size of the aging population
growing fast, health maintenance provision will become sufficiently substantial and profitable
to fully develop as an industry.
Fitness gadgets continue to be popular - but remain gadgets. Companies successful in
behavioral change in other industries (music, fashion, consumer electronics, consumer
goods, food and beverages) use advertising, retail experiences, addictive products and
ingredients, pricing incentives, loyalty schemes, and customer relationship management
tools for behavioral change as well. These methods will enter the health maintenance
industry and replace the gadgetry.
Sleep will become a new industry: The prevalence of lifestyle related illness will push
research and discovery into what keeps us sane, fit and healthy. This R&D will also improve
our understanding of the healthy effects of sleep and trigger discoveries to improve its
effectiveness.

From consumer to co-producer; giving people (individuals and communities) information to
make the right health choices and maintain healthy lifestyles.
From crude to enhanced: giving health professionals sophisticated software to collect,
interpret and share health and patient data.
From pills to plans: giving people (individuals and communities) products and instructions
that have sustained impact on their behavior and health.
From calls to feedback loops: equipping people with constant health tracking with direct
feedback to the individual and health professional.
From mono-disciplinary to holistic. Products and services that are based on the concept of
integrated body and mind.

Prevent (preventnow.com) is a 16-week online program designed to help people lose weight and change
the factors that put them at risk for type 2 diabetes. Combines a clinically-proven curriculum with
individual mentorship to guide participants toward manageable but powerful goals.
Imagine if we were able to immediately translate the impact of good or bad decisions onto our health
and overall life expectancy, surely we would be more inclined to make better decisions overall .
IGNITE is a personal health tracking system that does just that, by actively monitoring a user’s life
expectancy using a smartphone’s sensors.
Wellness tracker takes mood rings to the next level. The W/Me is a wristband sensor that monitors a
wearer's feelings via the autonomic nervous system. In order to provide a more complete view of
health, the device translates the data it collects into three scores: mental state, agility, and age of ones
nerve system. This reading is based on breathing, stress, and other factors.

Figure 1 is a new photo sharing app for healthcare professionals that enables them to post images to the
medical community and comment on them. The app provides a safe way to capture and share medical
images in real-time, and doctors will be able to learn from others through the platform.
Scanadu is building a suite of products using the elegance of science and the power of technology that
will empower users to monitor (temperature, heart rate, oximetry, ecg, HRV, PWTT) their health
anytime, anywhere. Each product wirelessly and effortlessly connects to a smartphone, providing users
with analytics and intelligence to live a healthier life.
RevUp! helps to make sense of health data and provides better access to analysis from healthcare
professionals. The platform also uses predictive intelligence to give users better access to proactive and
preventative health care.

The world’s first prescription-only smartphone app (FDA approved). . The app helps people with type 2
diabetes, the most common form, by nudging them when it’s time to check their blood sugar levels,
reminding them how and when to control fluctuations, and offering periodic advice.
BioniqHealth.com compares the features and quality of all varieties of health trackers. It hopes to give
doctors the option to “prescribe” certain health devices and build a community to offer detailed
reviews. Bioniq will help individuals to find tools and technologies most relevant to their specific needs
(i.e. I want to run a marathon, I want to better understand and manage my sleep)”.
Sleep mask that helps wearers sleep in a more efficient way by shifting them from a monophasic sleep
to a polyphasic one. Polyphasic sleep cycles break up normal rest periods into smaller parts –
depending on preference, it can be anywhere from 2 to 6 hours – throughout the day.

The HealthPatch biosensor is a clinical-grade biometric measurements in a continuous, configurable
and non-obtrusive manner using a small yet powerful patch worn on the chest. It can be customized for
type and frequency of data collection, communicates via Bluetooth LE and provides HIPPA-compliant
cloud-based connectivity, analytics, and storage.
Designed to track the amount of medication inside them in real-time, wirelessly send this HIPAA-
compliant data into the cloud, and remind patients to take their prescribed dosage via automated phone
call or text message.
Sleep Number’s dual-sided bed features built-in Sleep IQ technology that monitors sleep patterns and
recommends optimal settings for the adjustable mattress. It also cross-references the data collected
throughout the night against pre-sleep activities such as exercise and caffeine to deliver Sleep IQ
scores.

Green spaces have lasting impact on people's mental well-being. UK researchers found moving to a
green space had a sustained positive effect (measured up to 3 years), unlike pay rises or promotions,
which only provided a short-term boost.
Tellspec lets you discover allergens before you've eaten them. Scanning the item in question, the gadget
sends a list of ingredients and nutritional information to a companion app, which makes it easy to
evaluate your food before you’ve put it in your mouth.
Nestlé Will Test Health Foods on Human Brain Cells. Nestlé competitors like Danone have also been
investing in nutrition or medically enhanced products. The worldwide market for health and wellness
food and beverages is forecast to grow from $772 billion in 2013 to $944 billion in 2018.

Concept 01
Unproductive, non-restorative sleep is proven to lead
to weigh gain, premature ageing general drop in
efficiency and acuity in work. Smart phone-based
devices are only capable of tracking, not of
regulating sleep influencers.
Smart bed linen through sensors tracks user’s sleep
and through cooling/heating elements, dynamic bed
springs, etc. optimizes the user’s sleep experience.
The product tracks and regulates a variety of sleep
aspects, including pressure, movement, posture,
temperature, heartbeat, breathing patterns.

Freemium: mobile app with - evidence based – practical tips and training on how to improve
your sleep
Multi-sided platforms: make product and network open to various health professionals and
app developers to develop consumers with a variety of personalized approaches to sleep.
Re-aggregate existing services into a total sleep solution
Infomediaries: stats and metrics from other sleepers are automatically gathered and
anonymously aggregated to create a benchmark of similar age/size/gender to generate
baseline comparisons for patients and health professionals. Build biggest database on sleep
Experiences: create the ultimate sleeping experience together with large hotel chain
Upcycling: stimulate “giving-back” services after at the end of a treatment period. After the
product has worked for you, it will be passed on to other users, or will be deconstructed and
valuable materials will be re-used in next generation devices

Re-aggregation: stress does not live in isolation and is often related to sleep disorders, food
consumption and lack of activity. Aggregate related services into a holistic offering around specific
target groups and specific treatments
Infomediaries: provide benchmarks of stress management from around the World and comparing
services for individual treatment. Creating the biggest global database and therefore the best access
to solutions
Cloud services: partly replace stress related health professionals with AI tools and treatments
Behavior change: Making healthy living (incl. stress reduction) a brand utility and part of the
company culture and brand communications

Concept 03
(First time) parents incur a lot of stress about
their baby's health. Baby sleeping is the top
rated issue/concern for new parents. Better
infant sleep correlates with better cognitive
and motoric skills development.
A smart baby monitor for better sleep of baby
(and parents). It contributes to better child
development and relieves the concerns of
the parents. Brings insightful analytics
around the baby's location, activity, vital stats
and sleep patterns.
SMART BABY
MONITOR
60
Everything as a service: baby sleep as a service – subscribe to service, (renewable each
6 months) and get a combination of smart baby monitor, humidifier, nest thermostat, Philips
hue lighting kit and speaker plus on-demand analytics plus skype consults as-needed with
pediatricians
Embedded intelligence: smart baby monitor includes feedback loop with smart
thermostat/humidifier/lighting – optimizes lighting, temperature, CO2 level, humidity,
sounds/music of baby room to optimize sleep conditions based on intelligent monitoring of
most optimal sleep
Collaborative consumption: Pediatricians in the network are retired/stay-at-home
pediatricians who want to leverage their underutilized expertise and experience and want to
keep involved in their work
Inclusive sourcing: set and audit standards of pediatricians, but also connects them back
to their working live and trains them in Skype-based consulting
Upcycling: at the end of the three year lifecycle, products will come back to the producer,
will be refurbished and re-used for next generation babies

  • 43. 43 Health maintenance products and services professionalizing. For aging people (totally different from youth) maintaining health and staying fit is a number one priority, but one that often requires deeply engrained changes in behavior. With the size of the aging population growing fast, health maintenance provision will become sufficiently substantial and profitable to fully develop as an industry. Fitness gadgets continue to be popular - but remain gadgets. Companies successful in behavioral change in other industries (music, fashion, consumer electronics, consumer goods, food and beverages) use advertising, retail experiences, addictive products and ingredients, pricing incentives, loyalty schemes, and customer relationship management tools for behavioral change as well. These methods will enter the health maintenance industry and replace the gadgetry. Sleep will become a new industry: The prevalence of lifestyle related illness will push research and discovery into what keeps us sane, fit and healthy. This R&D will also improve our understanding of the healthy effects of sleep and trigger discoveries to improve its effectiveness. 4 5 6 …UNFOLDING AT A RAPID PACE
