2. UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF
INTELLIGENCE
WHAT IS INTELLIGENCE?
Gottfredson (1997), cited by Ali, defines Intelligence as the capacity
to “reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly (conceptually),
comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience.”
Tariq further suggests that intelligence involves one’s ability to
interact and adapt to their environment. This indicates that like
humans, animals are capable of intelligence as this is evident in their
acclimatization to the environment.
The question then is, are computers (machines) intelligent?

3. ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE (AI)
A branch of computer sciences
concerned with creating and
developing (simulating)
intelligence in machines,
enabling them to:
• Solve complex problems
• Learn from interactions
• More or less, mimic human
behaviour and do human
tasks efficiently

4. SO HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM EVERYDAY
COMPUTERS?
Conventional computers:
Produces reliable and consistent solutions to problems e.g.
Calculator.
Programmed to solve problems.
Problem-solving is limited to a given domain.
In contrast, Artificial Intelligence:
Solutions are not reliable and consistent, susceptible to error.
Solving problems is not based on programming but involves
reasoning and inferencing over existing knowledge.
Offers problem-solving over a wide range of knowledge domains
simultaneously.
5. HOW DOES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
WORK?
• The simulation of artificial intelligence involves the
development of artificial neural networks and
programming. Artificial neural networks composed of
interconnecting artificial neurons constructs that mimic the
properties of biological neurons through programmed sets
of instructions.
• The artificial neurons allow the machines to perceive and
receive stimuli from the environment and take action in
response

• Resembles the structure of a human neuron
7. APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
MEDICINE:
Artificial intelligence robots can be used for complex surgeries
and operations involving internal organs in the fields of cardiology
and neurology.
Artificial intelligence systems can help organize the administration
systems in hospitals and clinics

8. APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
INDUSTRY
Artificial intelligence robots can be used for the manufacturing of
machinery of goods large industries.
The robots are more efficient than humans, less vulnerable to
injury in high-risk dangerous tasks

9. APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
EDUCATION
Artificial Intelligence can allow schools to facilitate personalized
learning experiences for their students.
It can be used to diagnose learners' weaknesses and strengths
from assessment data and suggest a learning approach that suits
the learner considering their learning styles, ability and
experience.
Artificial Intelligence systems can help organize the administrative
work of teachers and schools
