This survey was conducted in January 2016 among 400 U.S. facility leaders in establishments including data centers, commercial and industrial buildings, retail, healthcare, education, government and other building environments. Respondents have responsibility related to purchasing energy and technology solutions, and their biggest responsibilities included facility management and operations management. Facility managers are increasingly adapting their building maintenance strategies in response to the Internet of Things (IoT).

Summary
• Data centers / IT are likely to spend the most on electricity in a year.
• A larger proportion of those managing larger buildings are using
energy management systems
• System data storage is the biggest concern around remote
diagnostics while the level of investment required acts as a barrier to
adopting Big Data solutions.
• Capital expenditure budgets are set to increase for 2016, compared
to 2015. Over a fifth anticipate an increase of 10%+.

Majority have final say in facility decisions
• An online survey was conducted with decision makers in Facilities
Management and Maintenance across the US.
• Over half (57%) make all of the final facility maintenance outsourcing
decisions, while the remaining make the decisions or have influence
over decisions to some extent. Respondents have a variety of
responsibilities and years of industry experience:

Level of investment acts as a barrier to Big Data solutions
Level of investment and lack of resources act as the biggest barriers to the adoption of big data solutions
and analytics. However, those who cite lack of resource available are also likely to project the capital
expenditure budget for 2016 increase so this may no longer pose as a barrier in the future.

Bigger buildings are likely to use energy management systems
Typically, energy management systems are used in bigger buildings. Smaller buildings might not be able to
utilise such systems to their full potential. Similarly, newer buildings (less that 12 years old) are more likely
to use energy management systems as opposed to older buildings.

likely to split opinion in terms of whether or not it is desired. Over 40% across all areas want predictive risk

Information and recommendations from vendors that have previously been used is heavily relied on when thinking about
