to foreigners by the people who were born in
America.
They tried to limit immigration
In the 1800s they were against the Irish
In the 1900s they were against Asians, Jews &
anyone from Eastern Europe.

500,000 members.
Henry Bowers started the American Protective
Association & he hated catholics and
foreigners.
Denis Kearny, an Irish immigrant, started the
Workingman’s Party of California.
The Workingman’s Party wanted to stop
Chinese immigrants & racial violence resulted.

Exclusion Act.
It barred Chinese immigration for 10
years.
It prevented the Chinese who were
already in America from becoming
citizens.
This act was not repealed until 1943.
