Your everyday habits determine your content 
marketing success.
During the last 10 years, I’ve interviewed over 500 
successfully published authors.
Although their rituals and tools may differ, there is 
remarkable consistency to their attitudes and values. 
The same is true of successful content marketers. 
They understand success isn’t based on a “silver bullet.”
Rather, it’s based on the underlying habits you and your 
team cultivate.

1.  Planners
Successful content marketers are planners. 
They create a content strategy based on their market’s 
information needs and they choose topics well in 
advance of publication. 
They identify themes for upcoming months and topics 
for upcoming weeks. 
They build content marketing into their daily schedules. 
This advance planning pays off in less stress and better 
results.

2. Proactive
Successful content marketers are action oriented.
They get an early start on their projects—even when 
they don’t feel they’re ready to start. 
Early starts cut stress and reduce mistakes. 
They recognize that first drafts represent just the 
starting point. Quality doesn’t emerge until later, after 
headline tuning and numerous revisions. 
Early starts pay off in more time later for editing, 
creating graphics, and promoting their content.

3.  Disciplined
Successful content marketers take a disciplined approach 
to time management. 
They take daily action on their weekly and monthly 
goals. 
They create mini‐deadlines for the various tasks 
associated with each project. 
Often, they favor short, frequent working sessions. 
These build momentum and create feelings of progress.

4.  Craftsmen 
Successful content marketers take pride in their content.
They “sweat the details.” They take the time to do the 
job right. They take personal pride in their content.
Over time, they develop a personal style—but they 
never stop trying to improve it. 
They are continually on the lookout for fresh ideas and 
approaches, as well as new skills and tools.
But, truly caring lies at the core of their content.

5. Efficient
Successful content marketers value productivity.
Because they value their content and their time, they 
are constantly searching for enhanced productivity.  
They use checklists, mind maps, templates, and 
worksheets to jumpstart their projects and organize 
their ideas before writing. 
They make maximum use of their software, including 
keyboard shortcuts. They organize their computer’s 
folders and files for easy access and backup.

6. Realists
Successful content marketers don’t take anything for 
granted. 
They recognize that their content’s value is measured by 
the  value it provides to others. 
They are constantly testing and tracking. They test 
headlines, titles, and topics before writing. They 
measure the success of their content in terms of 
conversions, referrals, visits, and other matrics. 
Successful content marketers also recognize that even 
the best content has to be promoted to be effective.

7. Team builders
Successful content marketers recognize that teams are 
stronger than individual stars.
They delegate, rather than trying to do everything 
themselves. 
Because they are interested in sustainable, long‐term 
success, they look for others with complementary skills. 
They cultivate long‐term relationships and strive to bring 
out the best in others. They welcome opportunities to 
nurture, trust, and be trusted.
