Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, first, I would like to welcome you, welcome to join our session. My name is Cheng, with my colleague Di, we are both student ambassador from TU Delft, and we are in charge of TU Delft official account on Weibo. And Weibo is also the topic we are gonna talk about today. [30”]
Recent years, there are more and more Chinese students willing to study abroad, open their minds. Same story, in TU Delft, the number of Chinese students is increasing every year. Gradually, we become the biggest group among all the international students in TU Delft. And I believe the condition or tendency is the same in your universities as well. [30”]
Two months ago, we had a post on Weibo by giving out 5 TU Delft sweaters to celebrate and thank for getting our 5000th Weibo fan. [20”]
From November, 2012 to April, 2015, in 29 months, we obtained more than 5200 followers on Weibo. Yes, 5200, that’s quite a lot. However, a huge percentage of these fans are in China or in China quite often. [30”]
Here is the story of our Great Wall. Not the beautiful Great Wall in this picture, but the Great Wall on the Internet. For some special reasons, our government built this wall on the internet to stop all the people in China from getting access to several websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube. Luckily, here we are at the left side of the Great Wall, but many of our TU Delft fans on Weibo are at the right side now. There is no doubt that we also want to let them be updated. We need to save them. [60”]

So, we have Chinese students and Chinese fans in China. Apparently, after Facebook and Twitter, we have to find another proper online social platform. That’s Weibo. Weibo is from a Chinese IT company named Sina, so it is also called Sina Weibo by many people. And Weibo is one of the most popular online social media in China, you can imagine it is a combination of Facebook and Twitter. Nowadays, there are hundreds millions of people are using Weibo. [40”]
Comparing Weibo with other online social platforms in China, it also has many advantages. First, the user base is enormous. Second, it is more open, not only your fans, but everybody can see your posts. Besides, almost all the electronic devices with internet can browse Weibo, computers, laptops, mobiles, tablets, etc. It is quite easy and convenient to use. [30”]
So many reasons to start a university Weibo account, but how? Actually there is nothing special, just similar to start a Facebook or Twitter account, filling in all your university info and done. There is only one thing extra, do not forget to verify your account. The verification of your account on Weibo is for free but necessary. Same as trusting ISO, people in China trust verified account. With this verification, they know all the information you post is truely from your university and then they are more likely to follow you. [50”]
And next, next, Di will tell you how we maintain our Weibo account.
As we already have a mature Facebook account, a big part of our work is collecting posts from Facebook. The rest of our work is special related to China.
Now I would like to give some examples to show different types of posts we have.
The fundamental role of our Weibo account is a channel to pass useful and precise information to our users. Any changes related to application, admission, enrolment….can make a big difference students. We need to keep an eye on these changes and post it on time.
“The newest application information is updated, part of the procedure are changed, please check the official website to adjust your own plan.”
A lot of questions come in comments, an advanced function here is that we can forwarded the post by adding our answers. This helps to enrich our information little by little than the original post.
It doesn’t happen often but when there is an event will happen in China, Weibo is the channel to spread the word. We can at least reach 5000 followers and they will help us reach more people.
“In March we held information sessions and alumni meetings in China and all of them are spread by Weibo. Even 2/3 days before the information session, some students had problems with registration and through our emails with Janneke, problems are solved.”
There are lots of nice stories. Here I want to tell you a nice story.
We do not only play a functional role, but also want to show some social responsibilities and humanistic concerns as a World-class university. We respond to international events when it is necessary. “So when we heard about the missing flight MH17, with 2 TUD students on the flight, we felt we should do something. 2 days after the accident, we post an announcement and forwarded a post from our student.”
And a student shot a photo outside of our library, when people are mourning over Fatima Dyczynski.
Interact with other university accounts can also draw people’s attention. “A cooperation between 3 Dutch technical universities.”
