Alex Hokanson + Brett Inman, Docker Microservice architectures can be difficult to implement. Specifically how to route to the a service correctly and ensure that traffic is spread across all instances of that service. What happens in a cloud environment where it is normal to lose and gain service instances as a part of daily operations? How do you configure something to be able to consistently route to your service when you don’t even know where your service is running!? At Docker, we developed our own highly available and automated API server on top of HAProxy with deep integration with Consul. Our API server acts as a service discovery and load balancing service to ensure availability in a highly dynamic environment. In addition to running such a complex application, we need to support thousands of requests per second while being able to monitor every request that comes through--that is no small feat! In addition to running a highly available API server, we also recently migrated it from running natively on Ubuntu 14.04 to run all components inside of containers by using Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise. With the containerization journey came some benefits along with new challenges that were not foreseen.

Physicians Mutual, a 117-year-old Nebraska-based insurance company, had worked on modernizing its systems for over a decade. In such a complex industry, any IT refresh can seem like a never-ending journey. The existing application architecture made it difficult to scale or refresh applications individually. Large-scale Javascript applications benefit from a modular approach that let code be reused both within the application and across repeated implementations. In this session, we'll look at the modular approach used to build reusable Javascript modules in the Red Hat mobile field workforce management application (WFM) showcased in this year's Summit middleware keynote demo. Reusable modules for WFM are packaged as node package manager (npm) modules, providing a consistent format for both server and client sides using Node.js and Browserify. Modules are loosely coupled using the Mediator pattern and they broadcast user actions and state changes giving the application and other modules the opportunity to hook into those events. Additionally, visual components are packaged in a framework-agnostic manner, providing reusable UI components. You'll leave this session understanding the challenges faced when building reusable modules for large-scale applications, and the solutions employed in building out the reusable WFM modules.

Businesses are speeding up development and automating operations to remain competitive and to get large organizations to scale. Project based monolithic application updates are replaced by product teams owning containerized microservices. This puts developers on call, responsible for pushing code to production, fixing it when it breaks, and managing the cost and security aspects of running their microservices. In this world operations skill-sets are either embedded in the microservices development teams, or building and operating API driven platforms. The platform automates stress testing, canary based deployment, penetration testing and enforces availability and security requirements. There are no meetings or tickets to file in the delivery process for updating a containerized microservice, which can happen many times a day, and takes seconds to complete. The role of site reliability engineering moves from firefighting and fixing outages to buiding tools for finding problems and routing those problems to the right developers. SREs manage the incident lifecycle for customer visible problems, and measure and publish availability metrics. This may sound futuristic but Werner Vogels described this as “You build it, you run it” in 2006.
