- Why we must act: - More plastics than fish by weight in the oceans by 2050 - Waste in Scotland responsible for 10.6mT CO2 by consumption in 2015 - Lost 84% of UK’s fertile topsoils since 1850 £100m of recyclable materials exported out of Scotland every year. Export markets getting tighter (e.g. China ban) leaving us more exposed to business risks. What do we know is happening in a policy context - during the next 3-5 years a number of things will happen Brexit will change our operating and policy landscape The CE package could change the policy framework for everything we do – even after Brexit as SG is keen to align with Europe. We will have a DRS system operational in Scotland We will have a strategy (and actions) on EPR (coming out of the Expert Group on Environmental Charging) There will surely be global (and visible) action on marine plastics There will be a biodegradable landfill ban in Scotland SEEP will be live and operational The Energy Strategy will be bedded in and a focus for action We need to think about what our role might be to lead on many of these and what other things we might want to shape to happen over the next few years
