This posed a serious structural dilemma. The floor slab of Oasis mall is rated to carry a maximum load
of 500 kg/m2. The proposed structural mezzanine was estimated to weigh 20 tons, and covered an area of approx 2000
sft.
The problem was solved in an innovative manner:
A structural “cobweb” of radiating steel I-sections was erected on site, in conjunction with existing columns. Where
new columns had to be erected, the pre-fab slab was opened up enough to reveal the top plate of steel columns below,
and a suitable plate connection made between old and new columns was made.
In addition, 10 mm. thk. Steel plate was welded on either side of I-section beams in the parking lot below. This
increased the structural strength of the beams, enabling them to carry the extra load.
The flooring consisted of 4 mm. thk steel sheets welded to the cobweb frame, and 12 mm. thk ply screwed down onto
the steel sheet. Carpet was then laid over the ply.
Certain cantilevered sections of the spaceship had to have peripheral steel members to counter sag.
Once the steel deck was erected, the “body” of the spaceship was fabricated in situ, with MDF boards. Workstations
had individual wide-angled windows, so that a person could work, yet simultaneously view activities on the main level
of Cyborg. Theming and painting were later added on, to enhance the “spaceship” feel.
Indirect lighting also added to the subdued ambience.

The Pink Lady Mocktail Bar
The Pink Lady Mocktail Bar
This is one of the most vibrant areas of Cyborg, designed to not only attract one in,
but provide an enchanting focus for the far-end of Cyborg.
Sinuously stretching out over 8 metres, the Pink Lady is a mocktail bar ,supported by full-fledged kitchen behind, and
serves not just fruit and juice mocktails but an array of snacks and finger-food.
The charm of the bar lies in its curving profile – achieved by placing 14 sheets of frosted , tempered glass in a
segmented U-channel. The frosted glass panels have their internal face lined with pink, translucent vinyl, and back-lit
by 96 two-foot fluorescent tubes. The frosted front face of the glass panels help to visually soften the pink, yet not
decrease the visual impact.
The café seating area has overhead Ultraviolet tube fixtures, pointed towards floor and ceiling. The floor-facing
fixtures pick up tile joints painted with a fluorescent pigment. The ceiling-facing fixtures pick up a vibrant galactic
night sky, painted in various fluorescent shades.
The flooring of the café is made up of stark,
swirling areas of black and white tile chips.
These swirls radiate out from the centre of the café,
reminiscent of a whirlpool.
The corner of the café is taken up by a Music Retail
area, stocking the latest in audio CD’s, together with
a listening station.
